Ashar Al Assad lied. Sarin gas is extremely volatile, and has a short shelf life. It is highly unlikely that the rebels were transporting Sarin gas in it's reactive form. Nucleophilic attack or hydrolization of the phosphorus-fluoride bond make the gas inert (chemistry lingo, meaning if it comes in contact with water it becomes non-toxic). In addition, according to Assad and Russia, the rebels stole sarin gas, and the explosion happened because it was bombed by their planes. Even if the Sarin gas was in it's reactive form, it would have degraded from the explosion. It is only dangerous when released as a volatile gas, and it decomposes in the air after a few hours. The proof is in the chemistry science. Anyone who has taken advanced college organic chemistry can do a quick google search of the molecular structure of Sarin and validate what I've said.

This is exactly why our president gave Putin fair warning, so he could evacuate his troops and tell Assad to evacuate any civilians at the base. Steven Weir: The reason we don't bomb them for using conventional weapons, is because there is no international treaty against conventional weapons. There is, however, an international treaty against the use of chemical weapons; one which both Assad and Putin signed. Assad broke the treaty, so he got slapped on the wrist. Had he had used conventional bombs, the U.S. would not have gotten involved. Yes, death is death, but one is a far more brutal and tortured death than the other, which is why chemical weapons are banned world wide. Any country using them is breaking international law. Unfortunately President Trump was the only world leader with enough balls to not cower in the corner because of Russia. Hell, Obama would have been apologizing to both Assad and Putin for even looking in their direction last Tuesday.
