[00:26] - 1. Sketch a line drawing in pencil (H, HB, F)
[00:58] - 2. Wet the board. Add in diluted color stains.

[05:19] - 4. Develop the shadow pattern, what's lit/unlit.
[07:27] - 5. Establish the figure ground relationship.
[09:17] - 6. Add opacity to the core shadows. Develop tiles.

You can also adjust the photo reference in an art program before viewing/ printing to work from. Lighten the shadows and even digitally paint in a bit. You can also photobash/collage/matte paint references together. Or view several and use your mind to take what you need from each. I often prefer multiple references. But it depends on what your doing. In the case of a study you can also focus on tonal value and use different colours! Gouache has become my favourite medium (tied with digital). I highly recommend people use mixed with watercolour and also get and use dollar store makeup brushes they are amazing you can do cool and very soft effect/blending!

Hi guys! Stoked about the new video. However the music is distracting. I have always preferred your videos over Stan's because of the high tempo music. It's hard to chill while watching it. But at the end of the day this will be a lot about a personal preference and it will be hard for you to please everybody. For me though - without music - better.

To make nice pale purple you take 2/3 dioxazine purple and mix in with 1/3 zinc white. Beutiful. Another very nice purple is Old Holland cad yellow middle PY35 and pthalo blue PB15. Oh what a nice bright purple that is... Snap out of it, huh?

"H or F.. so you don't score the surface too much" I know some people have that problem, but I usually don't score the paper even with 6H, AFAICS. Is there something I'm missing here? Normally I only go hard if I want to flatten the grain of the paper. Nice to know about softer grades being more soluble, I'll have to experiment with that.

Is Jeff resting his hand on the surface? I'm just starting to do phase 1 gouache and my arm fatigues rather quickly when I float my hand in the air. I'd like to know if that's okay or if I should learn to push through.
@HajraMeeks
@HajraMeeks 2 жыл бұрын
You can rest your hand on the paper in areas that are dried or mostly dry with watercolor or gouache. They dry a lot faster than oils so floating your hand the whole time or a mahl stick aren't necessary with gouache. You can also use a drawing bridge if you need it, but I've found gouache dries fast enough that I can rest my hand on the paper often. Good luck!
@tthomas184
@tthomas184 2 жыл бұрын
@@HajraMeeks I've heard oil or perspiration from the hand can interfere with paint adhesion, it probably differs according to the person. In addition to your suggestions, some people use a glove like that used in digital painting.

Gouache should be dark to light isn't it? Why struggle light to dark like watercolour when you could do opposite easily.example....that jacket could be done dark first and then light highlights on it
@carlkligerman1981
@carlkligerman1981 2 жыл бұрын
I think the point of the technique is to build up to the darks. The lighter washes underneath will do more than is apparent on film to ‘unify’ your palette. As far as technicians go this guy is probably the best and most knowledgeable outside of the Russian academies so I don’t know, I would just more or less watch and learn.

Gouache can be Additive (both dark to light and light to dark) and not just Subtractive (like transparent watercolor usually, and even watercolor can be tweaked to go both directions). Jeff is a pro with tons of experience, he can do both Additive and Subtractive with ease.
