Great tips. I need to break the bad habit of tweaking my settings while I'm shooting, I'm sure I've missed out on a lot of special moments I could have captured, so I guess the key is set it and forget it!

Thanks! That is a great one to mention, thanks for sharing. Wish I had added that to the video now haha. Bonus bad habit for people in the comments I guess. Yeah, tweaking settings too often in the field has led me to more than a few missed shots…

I do chimp occasionally to check exposure if it's tricky, but I'm on a tripod 99.9% of the time unless I'm shooting from a vehicle. I keep the camera on the subject, (not moving of course) and just take a quick peek for piece of mind.

Me too. I personally don’t think a quick glance to check that your settings are right counts as chimping. If you’re stuffing around long enough to miss a moment, sure, but a quick “oh, this might be better if I go down a stop” or “I can raise my shutter speed” surely isn’t chimping. I don’t want to leave a scene with 100 ok shots that could have been perfected by a brief check on my photos and change in settings. I do feel self conscious doing it around other photographers though!

Regarding chimping, while I love the quote from Charles and the idea of staying focused, as well as your examples, I do think in all fairness, the idea of "checking not chimping" (I know, semantics.) should be taught as a tool to be used when appropriate. Sometimes, it *may* be used to ensure you're getting a proper shot at all. A shot that is in focus, not clipping (histogram review) possibly due to light changes, checking composition/framing (policing corners). Is your shutter speed sufficient for the look you are after? Be it wildlife panning, wings, water flow, or drum sticks blurred but the drummer sharp at a concert. Should you be using a circular polarizer to cut wet rock/leaf glare? The best time to fix these things is while you are still afield and my fear is that we risk talking people out of viable learning opportunities. Sometimes, it is wiser to check your work, before simply producing more poor quality. All that said, I get that it is impossible to cover everything in a video and I do so enjoy your work and thoughtful videos.

Thank you so much for sharing all this great information. I am having a blast watching all your videos, I’ve been photographing wildlife for a year now, I’m still a beginner, I have a Canon M50 with the tele lens 55-250mm it was my budget at that time, saving now get a better more range, better quality photos, any recommendations?

I dont know how much money you got, but a used sigma 150-500 goes for 500 used, the 150-600 contemporary more like 750, canon's rf 100-400 is about 600(better quality than the sigma 150-500, but very narrow aperture), the ef 100-400 is about 750 used. Make sure you get one with a lens hood. I use mpb. Also, guessing you shoot video, a tripod or video head if you dont have one would be very helpful.
