I wrote this effect more than 20 years ago, thanks so much for taking the time to explain it. One note: the purpose of the "smoothing" parameter is to blur out the steps between pixel values where the water height is changing slowly. Otherwise you can see exactly where the pixel value of the wave map changes, as with the concentric rings at 10:46. This is probably far less of an issue if you're working in 16 or 32 bpc (though I don't know if Wave World and Caustics were ever updated past 8bpc!)

Hey Jonathan Great to read! I'm making a 2023 TV channel branding that is using this plugin to create realistic glass effects! love it! Only thing I have is there is some flickering on the edges of the text. guess some reflections are acting up. Great effect!

How you demystify the enigma that is AE is borderline therapeutic. It's like I can feel a drop in my cortisol levels where the direction I wanna take a project doesn't seem all too impossible after watching one of your videos. Thanks, Jake, for these masterclass tutorials.

This is perhaps the most detailed AE tutorial I've seen in a while. I mean thanks, this effect is just overwhelming and I couldn't have understood it myself. It'll take a while for me to get comfortable but I know the potential now.

Great tutorial, as always! Is there a way to use Wave World + Caustics with a different angle? Like, suppose I was looking at a swimming pool from the margin, the water surface would be something like 45 degrees from my eyes, not a perfect 90 degrees as the example...

Hi, Jake! Thanks for explaining! Could you please explain briefly how did you made the cells of Pool Floor? I've tried Turbulent noise with block type and tint it blacks to blue, but it not like yours :) Then I've tried to done with Mosaic, but it still not like your cells :) Your cells have a little thin white border each. Hmmmmm! :) Updated: I added the Grid over the turbulent noise and tint, but my turbulent noise type "block" looks like little cells inside big cells of checker table. Hmmmm!

Hey quick question.. what if you just used the wave world and put the mode to multiply, would it still make the effect on what ever there is under? I’m asking cuz I’m trying to make use with this to a packaging animation and could be really cool..

Hi Jake, a quick question. Why did you use null object 24:09 instead of animating the position property of producer 1?
@JakeInMotion
@JakeInMotion 2 жыл бұрын
Because animating with the producer won't allow you to use a motion path, so you're limited to linear movement. Using a null object would also allow you to separate the position dimensions if you prefer to animate x and y positions independently.

Hi, I’m 14 and trying to het into After Effects. I wouldn’t call myself an intermediate user because I don’t know of all the tools, effects etc. to help me. How do you know about all these tools (apart from researching YT Tutorials like this one)? Let’s say I want to create some kind of particle diamond shimmer effect, then how do I go about starting? I’m using it as an example to illustrate that I know what I want, but not about the effects needed to make it. Okay, I can look up tutorials, but a professional wouldn’t do that, also I don’t know how to describe what I want! Thanks for reading
@NOCProduction
@NOCProduction 2 жыл бұрын
"I can look up tutorials, but a professional wouldn’t do that", I would say it quite the opposite. Professionals also have to continue on learning and developing their craft as time progresses. Continue looking at tutorials, get a mentor or join a community to help any questions you might have, and create a projects that will that pushes your skills and knowledge to the limit. I'm a programmer and it true what they say, "When you become a programmer Google becomes your best friend".

Hey! Professionals most definitely look at tutorials, don’t feel like it’s taboo! I’m also pretty sure Jake mentioned at the beginning of this series that he is effectively making the AE manual visually. So you could definitely read up on AE’s Manual to get a base understanding of things - but the key (whether it’s from Jake/any other creator or from Adobe itself) is to get out there and try stuff out. Treat these tuts as tools in your utility belt and find out creative ways of combining them to get what you’re after! Best of luck 🤞🏾 Edit: also shouts to Jake for introducing us to the tools! Making me love after effects all over again

Don't be fooled by professionals/grown ups - they look stuff up all the time! That's true for pretty much every industry. It's something to be encouraged, not disparaged
