This is probably the effect I use most in AE, other than fill haha. 10 years and I've never known how to properly use the highlight feature.. so once again thank you Jake, you beautiful human.

Loved rediscovering this effect! I've used it so often in the past...but like the rest of this series, I see how I've only been using about 20% of it's power/funcitonality.

Great tutorial. Liked and Subbed. One question, how do you rotate the blur so its vertical? I tried rotating the solid layer but it didnt work. Many thanks

Another great Tutorial- thanks so much Jake :) I use this feature all the time, and really the sky's the limit to what you can do with it. I once used it on a poster ad that needed some help, and I hand painted a DOF matt in PS ( Lots of foliage!) for processing in AE and it really tied the composition together.

I like how you utilized that effect! Great Video! Hey Jake what's the best way to generate blur maps?
@JakeInMotion2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure there's a "best" way. From a 3d application it's automatic with a depth map. In AE if you're using 3d layers you can just enable depth of field on the 3d camera. If you need to take it with a custom depth map, then I would try doing it in as nondestructive of a way as possible. Like solid layers with mask paths. This way you can easily adjust the paths and feather out specific areas.

Using RunwayML, you can use AI to create an automatic depth map calculated from an image, or even a video- and it works pretty dang well.

Real nice. I’ve always done the dumbest shit making blur maps, this was a really smart way to do it rather than the super clunky mask way I always tried to do it
