The documentary film, 23 Seconds: A Louisville Mass Shooting features exclusive and intimate interviews with several of those involved in the tragedy that occurred at Old National Bank in Louisville, Kentucky on April 10th of 2023. The film recognizes only they should share their experience and pain in the hopes for recovery and healing.

The film delves into the toll of trauma, the pain violence leaves behind, and the heroism exhibited by those who risked their lives to save others.

The film is a WAVE Originals production and first debuted on March 29, 2024 on WAVE-TV.

After the first report that Officer Wilt had a “head shot” it seemed like that was synonymous with he didn’t make it. I am glad I watched this to see how well his rehab is doing. He must have some deficits that can’t be seen, but from what we can see, he, with the love of both his families, the Metro police and his mother and brother, and the support of the community, will have a long, successful life. This isn’t to diminish at all the loss the other families have experienced. Since five people were killed and only the family of one of them is in this documentary, there are four families who were not ready to share both how wonderful their loved one was and how they are coping with that empty chair at the dinner table. The Sandy Hook massacre just happened to be on my birthday, so that date is impossible for me to forget. That was TWELVE years ago. I was just positive that FINALLY, something would be done to, if not totally eliminate, at least save some lives. This documentary is just one tiny piece of the tragedies we are ALL forced to live with because a few people genuinely believe the loss of those lives don’t matter as long as they still have as many of any as many kinds of guns that they can have the money they have to buy weapons of mass destruction and keep them in their homes. How many more…?

I can so relate to the trauma surgeon. I am a flight nurse in another state. I began my career at the tender age of 17; with the thoughts of all of the wonderful things I could do for my fellow neighbors. My life was soon changed by all of the ugliness of this world. I have worked through a natural disaster that took the lives of over 300 people, unimaginable crimes and accidents, as well as illnesses that no one could imagine. I have no regrets. I pray daily that no one should ever see what I have seen-no human should. If I have made the life of just one person better, then I am truly blessed. The first people on my prayer list every day are first responders. May God bless everyone in this world.

I remember when this happened and there were a plethora of people questioning why the two officers ran up to that building not being able to see inside…but obviously it was a rush to get inside and find the shooter. Here in Baton Rouge we had officers ambushed and three were killed at the scene and one suffered a traumatic brain injury just like officer wilt. Unfortunately he passed away from his injuries a few years after.

It is true Uvalde was a largely failed response but none of the officers there were being negligent nor derelict in their duty to the victims as so many people peuriley accused them of being. There were multiple legit reasons why they were not able to make entry into Robb Elementary for 40-75 minutes or however long it was one of which was poor communication because of the radios cutting out, not because of sloppiness like they were accused of. Another example was how heavily secured the elementary was that even with all of their tools they had at their disposal it still took them quite a while to get through that much security construction. And there are other examples, too, which are too many to list here. But anyway BORTAC was finally able to gain entry into the elementary and neutralize the shooter after some missed opportunities that were missed due to poor communicating over the radios, not sloppiness. And the families' lawsuit against the entire law enforcement community that participated in Uvalde, while understandably justified, it was also a bit of an overreaction and hyperbolic. However the intensity and urgency with which Uvalde responders acted was the same as hers in this video. The only differences between two situations was that the Kentucky bank responders had better radio communication and less barriers to go through as far as I have been able to tell.

This one focused on bringing the victims out from behind the shadow of statistics and shows us a small glimpse of who they really were and those who lost so much when they were taken from them. Eugene Stoner, the inventor of this weapon said it was designed for the military, not civilians. They had muskets when the 2nd Amendment was written not assault weapons. Until gun laws are changed, this insanity will continue. It's big business and along with the NRA have lined the pockets of the congress to continue. The damage this style of gun does to the human body is horrific. Ask any trauma surgeon. There's no sport in hunting with the AR either. There's nothing left of the animal. Look at these US tourists in Turks and Caicos who are facing 12 years in prison for having ammunition in their luggage. Assault weapons should be banned, period. Gun rights? A very well done documentary. It definitely hits home in helping to understand the impact of the national disease we are inflicting upon ourselves called "a mass shooting". I live in louisville and this was so scary and very tragic. When this happened it really shocked our city, but our city is very strong. We came together like youre suppose to for your neighbors. Im proud to call louisville my home. Im happy to know that our officers, emt and fire personal are selfless people that have a passion for what they do and I can say I feel confident living in louisville knowing who will be there if ever needed. Semantics - the explanation itself is simple, evil is literally complex as there are different types, degrees, presentations etc. Mortals are so frail and fallible that, generally speaking, we succumb very easily to evil because of our susceptibility, vulnerability and cluelessness. So just because a shooter or whatever would happen to be someone's family member and the shooter was intent on shooting all of their victims dead and the shooter's family members found out about the plot and the shooter carried it through, then the shooter's family members should just automatically consider the shooter as being good? That is essentially what you seem to be saying. If it is, do you realize how moronic that sounds? And, yes! The shooter, if murdering, is still evil despite what their family members might think them to be. WOW! Yep, you are braindead! SMDH!

I live in Indianapolis, about 1.5 hours from Lousiville. I frequent St. Matthews Mall a few times/year. I was even going to move there about 15 years ago for a job. I vaguely remember this. So sad!!! RIP to the victims & prayers to the families. 🙌🏾

We can look at the recovery (victims, police department, survivors, family members, city) as the real story. It feels so heartwarming to see how much love we can all share. I felt the love and the connections made after this event. But….this mentally unstable shooter was still able to purchase an assault weapon legally with the intent to use it. I wish we could change that. 💔💔

You're so right! This video was done so wonderfully. On your second point in your comment, I found an article that hit on that part. He left 2 notes, one at his home and one on his person, plus a few posts on his IG that were very dark in theme. After watching this, I searched for any other news about it on Safari and there was an article about what investigators found out about him. It's definitely something to look into if you're interested on the 'why', like I was. I wish I could say it satisfied my curiosity, but it only made this whole tragedy that much more palpable because of how he thought doing this would change things instead of going a more peaceful route. 😢 💔

I can't believe with all the 911 calls that the police didn't believe it was real until they heard gunshots over the radio when the other cop yelled officer down. Take all calls seriously. When I was a vol. firefigher we had gotten a lot of calls over the years for fires at our local lumberyard which were controlled burns but.......one night we got the usual lumberyard call this time it was for real, giaganic devastating fire.

Came across this today, the day it all happened 1 year ago. How tragic this happened, the horror they all went through and no doubt still replay in their mind everyday. The ending, watching Officer Wilt improve and walk again sent the flood gates opening. To lose anyone is awful and my heart bleeds for those affected by the 5 who lost their lives but to see 1 miracle come out of all this is just unreal and special. May all who were involved one day find peace from the turmoil. ❤

Thank you for including the call takers and dispatchers. So often they are criticised or forgotten. As a previous call taker, know that these calls stay with you. We often don't know the results til we see the news, we don't know if the brave men and women in uniform we call friends are ok til we finally talk to someone after shift. Yes, an as someone who doesn't live there I struggle to understand the obsession with firearms, especially weapons of war. When we did the buy back of weapons we all united together as a country, to know the US has more guns than people and that these weapons take the lives of children and innocent people everyday and nothing changes 😢. I wish more documentaries were focused on the victims, families and friends and the impact it leaves.

As the people of Louisville approach the one-year anniversary of this tragic event, please know that although the community is forever changed, life does get easier as time goes on. My town lost 12 citizens in a mass shooting in 2019. The pain is still very real, but memories of those taken are being kept alive by family and friends, which has softened the pain for the entire community. This documentary was well done, and tastefully commemorates the sacrifices of the police and civilians during that tragic event. I hope that the city of Louisville continues to heal.

I know it's kind of redundant and obvious to say, but I don't understand why someone feels the need to go into a place and commit a massacre! As someone who has struggled with mental health all my life basically, with CPTSD from multiple traumas spanning from childhood, a past with suicide attempts and self-harm; I have never once fathomed taking anyone with me! The only reason I'd ever harm another person, is if they hurt my children! I know most people are like me in that thought! But the fact that these things are happening so frequently over the past few decades, is insane to me! Taking innocent lives for whatever reason, is so beyond evil! I'm sorry for the rant! I just can't understand why these people feel the need to commit these crimes! Edit: I wanted to add my sympathy for the victims and their families! I want to send my deepest condolences, love and healing energy to them! Also, I think this documentary is very well done in keeping focus on the victims and their families! ❤
