Thank you, Fran, for sharing this! Fantastic. I'm an audio engineer and was mesmerized. I notice a cool/interesting quirk in the voiceover -- e.g., "The particles move in a circle...DON'T THEY?" "The pendulums are forming a wave...AREN'T THEY? Maybe a vestige of the original being in Japanese, but I only speak 10 or so words of Japanese.

I've run into a few old educational videos like this where statements end in a question to the audience. I think it's a technique to reinforce the idea by inviting the viewer to actively agree.

I think it does actually help keep the kids committed when it's done that way. Kids tend to tune things out if just being told things. Ending in a question like that queues them in that there's an explanation to come, so they're more likely pay attention.

Although not for wave explanation, all of the kids in swings reminded me of a joke I saw related to "Newton's Cradle." That's the thing with the five steel balls handing in a row that demonstrates conservation of momentum. There is this drawing of five kids on a swing set hanging side by side motionless. An adult has pulled the kid at the end sideways and is about to release him. The text says, "Why science teachers should not be given playground duty."

One of my crazy “win the lottery” daydreams would be to fund the restoration and re-release of the old Physical Science Study Committee shorts, and maybe a documentary about the program. I still remember the time they were screening one in Physics class and it turned out to feature Frank Zappa’s dad.

By just the (ideal) wave? Yes. In real water the wind and currents move the objects forwards. Should be mentioned I think, because otherwise students will struggle with explaining why then things actually move in real life in the water.

Needed to pad it out, so the teacher could have a short discussion with the class on why these children were acting with proper decorum, and with the correct safety equipment for this dangerous swing. as well to allow longer time, so the entire period could be taken up with one film, and not have to have either subject to teach, or any extra material, children to merely refer to the textbook, on the chapter on simple harmonic motion. There will be a test tomorrow morning before the next film about this.

Science happened as those helmets are uniform and give a point to view that graphically illustrate the wave form and that helps eliminate distractions for what is being indicated.
