i think all haters should understand that waves modeled every step of the way in modulating these tapes using an analog oscillator ("vari-speed control" unit)... This is definitely not something you can do with your built-in DAW effects I don't think people appreciate the hard work it takes to make something like this...then making it work in all DAW software
@CrankCase0810 жыл бұрын
The point is that despite their supposed "hard work", it totally fails to do what Waves claims.
@Byronic191346 жыл бұрын
Waves absolutely worked hard and makes very accurate replications. But I can still replicate this with JS plugins in Reaper nonetheless however it's going to require doing more lfo automating then I usually feel like doing so it's certainly conveniant to have it in one plugin. I just wonder about the CPU load.

@10:00 Do you suppose the phasing issue (the holes) could be avoided by trying this on a bus (parallel processing)? I think if that part was done in parallel you might be able to dial in the ear-candy without adding too much of the phasing, resulting in a fuller mix with less emptiness...? What do you think? Speaking of ear-candy: How about a glass of water for that cotton mouth? All jokes aside though, it makes the video hard to listen to. Anyway, GREAT review. I'm buying this. *I think Waves owes you some kind of commission for closing the sale, lol.* (Perhaps you should seriously look into affiliate marketing with Waves. Most companies are willing to pay you for sales you're responsible for, whether you're on the payroll, or not.)

It was a great idea back then at EMI. Nowadays it CAN be reproduced. I just did it effortless with Arturia's ETERNITY-Delay as it has built-in LFOs. It gives you even more control over the tone.

Making it parallel introduces different phasing as well because it's a copy of the original. It's just making it useful and EQing correctly. I use it in parallel mostly because it doesn't have a mix knob I believe.

I was going to say the same..it's just another chorus flanger..but once he turned up the drive I could imagine John Lennon's voice in classic recordings (pun intended lol). But, one could just distort after chorus without this plugin none the less.
@reverendgroove10 жыл бұрын
The cynic in me wonders if this is just the Waves Doubler engine with a more vintage looking interface. Apart from the drive control the parameters are the same. In fact the doubler has more control over EQ than this. The interface makes it a little more clear whats going on but I don't know if I'd spend the extra for it.
@plum_line10 жыл бұрын
If you listen to the distortion the plugin provides you can see it's a bit different! Granted, I already have 30 plugins that distort my audio in a similar way... this just has the slight difference of being able to apply it to the source or adt... which is a useful shortcut.

I tried this, but it totally fails to reproduce authentic ADT, so I don't know what this reviewer thinks he's hearing. It has a tendency of thinning out the sound rather than giving it more body, which authentic double-tracking is supposed to do. Furthermore, when the mix is switched to mono, phasing artefacts become obvious. I'm not surprised it's taken a big price drop recently (although Waves does usually price their stuff at rapaciously high levels), it's likely been rumbled and failed to impress sufficiently.
@dondonaudio81919 жыл бұрын
+CrankCase08 I think it´s meant to be used in an additional track (an aux send or a doubled track) along with the original. That´s what I would normally do with doubled tracks as well. Thin them out and place them "behind" the main track and in a different stereo position in the mix. Maybe that´s why Waves did it like this. You absolutely have to have an eye on mono compatability with this (but also with any other phase-related effects). Although I totally agree with you with Waves hyping plugins that are not worth the money (NLS e.g.), they make pretty good ones as well (C4, C6, Renessaince Bundle, SSL - in my opinion). But it´s the same with UA for example. The prices are ridiculous keeping in mind that you need to buy the hardware as well and if you don´t like a plugin, you can´t sell it again. But then they throw coupons at you every week... naaah XD I bought the ADT + Renessaince Bass for 99.- and got Trueverb on top for free, so that´s a great deal for me :)

It's a really cool sounding plugin, but I hear it distorting the signal especially on the vocals and guitars once the signal starts getting wide. I don't know if its being caused by clipping the signal or what?
@Drfresh140210 жыл бұрын
The last waves plugin I got was the J37. Compared to UAD modern tape emulations that is a serious joke. I am really finished with waves. I simply will not continue to support plugins with good graphics but ineffective abilities. It seems as if they come out with new plugins every other month. For me to purchase another waves plugin it has to be capable of doing wonders like the UAD fairchild, or UAD ampex tape, or UAD API Vision strip. These plugins without question take mixes to incredible levels.
@hepphepps835610 жыл бұрын
I'm no waves lover, for sure, but as a former owner of a couple of real J37s I had to test the plug. If you keep close attention to your gain-structure, the plug-in does a VERY good job emulating the J37. I'm hooked.

I thoroughly agree. I even keep finding much cheaper and even free plugins that perform equally or better that Waves overpriced pretty stuff. The animated moving reel (also on the Kramer Master Tape) is just useless bullshit that adds an unnecessary drain on resources. Never tried UAD so I don't know if that's the same. Personally, I'd be happy with a spartan interface, just as long as the effect is good.

+Gorilla Chilla then you really didn't pay attention because there are several things this does that flangers and chorus can't do. Flangers can't increase or decrease the speed of transients on the fly or preserve phase like adat.

@guacamole24026 жыл бұрын
I don't know. Flangers and Choruses actually were side effects of the innovation of the ADT technique so of course you can get a flanger effect if you set the time parameters wrong.

it's a simple combination of chorus and flanger
@LeighDWYC8 жыл бұрын
It's not a combination of the two - Artificial Double Tracking which is where chorus and flanger evolved from many years after ADT was invented.
@neonether5 жыл бұрын
When you understand what makes a 'chorus' and 'flanger' sound, you'll understand this is not quite the same. If anything, the roland dimension is a bit closer to what's being done here, but still many stark differences.

It seems like Waves is trying to compete with an already saturated plugin market. There's plenty of other companies that do analog modelling, emulation, whatever, much better. I think Waves should just stick with what they were always doing best, and that is creating unique and interesting plugins instead of trying to model the entire Abbey Road facility.

hey geniuses maybe give people a clearer idea of what this thing is meant to accomplish by using an instrument that people actually play and which might actually benefit from doubling i.e. not gay electric piano which no musician in history has ever needed or wanted to thicken

+Liz R Dude did you even watch past one minute in the video? He showed you keys, pads, guitar, vocals, and drums... He also explained how and why it works.. What could be clearer on what it is used for? It is an effect, it can be used on anything.
@louispconstant66249 жыл бұрын
+Liz R Here because you are too lazy to do a search and find the info yourself.. Here is a genius describing he's experience with it: Butch Vig Producer / Musician / Songwriter Garbage, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Green Day “I’ve been looking for an authentic-sounding ADT for years. When I first got hold of Waves’ Reel ADT, I was floored by how analog it sounded. It sounded like the ADT the Beatles used. With my band Garbage, we’ve used it on electric and acoustic guitars, on drums, on bass: it sounds pretty amazing on a lot of instruments, not just on vocals. If you want an analog-sounding tape ADT, this plugin is going to give it to you."
@bonmot78509 жыл бұрын
louis p constant Hurray, now we can all finally sound like Garbage! (Because who wants to hear instruments that are actually expensive to record, such as real strings, brass or woodwinds... no, it's the stuff you can't easily multi-track in your bedroom, like synthesizers and guitars...)
@louispconstant66249 жыл бұрын
You said: "hey geniuses maybe give people a clearer idea of what this thing is meant to accomplish by using an instrument that people actually play and which might actually benefit from doubling i.e. not gay electric piano which no musician in history has ever needed or wanted to thicken" HE SHOWED YOU MOST COMMON INSTRUMENTS USED IN A SONG IN A SHORT TUTORIAL. Are you that lame that you cannot learn to learn? Also Garbage were a perfect band for their time, thus their success, and Butch Vig is one of the best producers in the industry... Nirvana ,Foo Fighters, Green Day... It's not about what you want to personally sound like in comparison to the mentioned bands.. It is about the production and use of the digital INSTRUMENT/EFFECT and the sound it produces, if you don't understand this then sorry it must have gone over your head bruh. Good luck

£60 for something you can do with your inbuilt plugins, which is indistinguishable? Nah, can't justify it. It's a one trick pony. Sorry Waves, it's hardly inspiring, and there is too much trying to recreate old effects, when nobody wants it really, now there are more exciting effects.
