Abbey Road Reel ADT sends the signal to two separate circuits: SRC and ADT. When the heads in the upper part are aligned, the difference between them is minimal, only affected by the character of the two J37 tape machines. If we invert the polarity of one of the circuits when both are panned to the center we can hear that the signal is not completely canceled due to the wow, flutter and other minutiae of the analog process. Additionally, each channel offers independent tape saturation controls.
Moving the ADT head to the right will delay the ADT signal. Moving it to the left will delay the SRC signal. This works in a similar way to a tape delay where the speed changes are gradual.
VARISPEED controls the motor speed of the ADT channel, which in practice means changing the position of the ADT head as well. This seems at first redundant but as we will see later this is the most important part of the ADT process. There are two ways to control VARISPEED, in LATCH the arm remains in the selected position and in TOUCH the arm always returns to the central position. Remember that this process used to be done by a person by hand.
The LFO controls Varispeed automatically. LFO RANGE defines the depth of the effect. RATE controls the speed and can be synchronized with the BPM of the host DAW. SHAPE offers the most useful curves for this application including RANDOM that simulates the manual process.
As we said before, what makes the #ADT process unique is the possibility of modulating VARISPEED and at the same time changing the relative position between the heads of the SRC and ADT tape machines. (For a more realistic effect, VARISPEED should not cross the center point). Now, regardless of this, if we use values contained within +/- 5ms we create the effect of #FLANGER or, if we invert the polarity of one of the channels, #PHASER.
The LIVE version of Reel ADT works exactly like the standard version but does not allow negative delay values in any of the signals. This was possible in the hardware thanks to the latency introduced by the #tapemachines and in the standard plugin through the automatic #delay compensation of the DAW.
The ADT2V version of the #plugin also works similarly to the standard version but includes a third tape machine in a second ADT channel. If we mute the output of one of them we will get the same sound as with the standard version. Of course here you can apply the same effects of delay, parallel #saturation and panning in both channels to achieve more diffuse and complex effects.

From the website:
Waves/Abbey Road Reel ADT is the first plugin to successfully emulate Abbey Road Studios’ pioneering process of Artificial Double Tracking. The effect that would become an integral part of Abbey Road’s signature sound was initially created at the famed studios in the 1960s to meet the needs of some very special clients: The Beatles.
Reel ADT puts the magic of that era in your hands within seconds. Using its intuitive controls, you can advance or delay the doubled signal to achieve genuine, lush-sounding delay and pitch variations. You can also drive each of the signals separately to add beautiful tape saturations.
With its authentic modeled valve tape machine sound and faithful emulation of wow and flutter, this extraordinary plugin can enhance any track with the impression of two separate takes, giving you results as close as possible to real double tracking. Other classic Abbey Road tape effects such as flanging and phasing can also be achieved with ease.
All the character, depth and panoramic sound of this inimitable classic effect can now be created digitally, simply and for real: Reel ADT.

Very inspiring plugin! It can be overwhelming at first glance but once you get in to each one of the processes it becomes a modulation machine.

@@AmagrasMUSICcan you show any song that you mixed where this plugin is on the lead vocals?

I see what you mean, I kinda agree the automatic double take sounds finicky in mono but I use this plugin to make stereo double takes and it rocks!

@@AmagrasMUSIC Can you show some record that you did with this plugin, and preferably the one that people liked? I heard here a decent setting, when you manipulated that modulation waveform at the bottom, the doubling effect was not bad.
