Indeed hard to control a side-surf! Two options I have found that work sometimes and are at least worth trying are: 1, if water is deep enough, drop your edge on the beach side and let the wave flip you. (some people call this a "windowshade") If the foam pile is not too big your body will act like a sea anchor and the boat will ride up and over the foam pile. 2: if the foam pile is still too big to do that, shift your weight forward or back and angle your paddle blade to pull or push your boat sideways on the foam pile. Whichever way you weight your boat will cause you to move slightly in the opposite direction as it changes what part of your boat contacts the water more . It isnt great but you can move sideways enough to avoid some obstacles if you have enough time to start moving early. Nice Paddling!!

Thanks. I dropped the first option as there are some rocks beneath the surface. But its certainly a way to get off.

I kayak my whole live and started surfing in norway 2 years ago, I see in this movie keep in your mind not to disturb surfers if they have a wave 🤘 Always paddle around. That everybody has a wave and its still fun for everybody in the sea ☺️❤️

Never have kayaked in the ocean but I can see now, with some more rocks and a little bigger wave a helmet may not be enough. Lol... Thanks for posting it.

"Getting side surfed", or "riding a broach" are indeed out of control hang on for dear life moments. "Sidesurfing" in a sea kayak is a skill where one moves laterally along the foam pile in the desired direction; these can lead to sometimes climbing the foam pile to do a "top turn" and drop back into surfing mode,(sometimes even as a "backsurf"), or to get to the wave backside. A few examples are on a video I posted a few years back called "NO Stratos Fear". Good luck, be safe & have fun!

The sand moves and change the beach all the time. I think its been crap this year with lots of visible rocks. Hope some winter storms change it for the better 🙂

Very interesting. So, is there a way once the breaking wave push you towards the rocks to moove the kayak away, i mean to escape?

We can try to roll, but I dont like to do it there as there are rocks beneath the surface.

@@rogeru73 That explains why that inuit hunters told me they prefered to roll just before a breaking waves hit there kayak. Here a breaking waves can arrive if suddenly an icebergs break or explode..Then suddenly the white water approach the kayak. So I guess they roll to avoid to be carried on by the waves.

@@maxaudibert5793 Yeah, most likely. But for us the sidesurf is part of the fun. Unless we hit rocks -.-

Prevention beats trying to recover. 1. You had three options. Position farther from the breaking side to start with, to your right, which would have kept you away from the surfer. 2. Paddle hard to get on the green water side of the shoulder; you barely paddled when sprinting for just a few strokes would have worked. 3. Turn and charge the wave; the surfer showed good control and would have easily avoided you. The wave looked small enough to punch through.

Sure. I could try to prevent the waves, but the waves are part of the fun and the reason we paddle at this beach. Only problem here was that it carried me a bit too far.
@yakinsea

@@rogeru73 My idea of fun in the surf is to punch through to the outside, turn and catch a ride on clean water, not to passively sit side on to an already breaking wave and get pushed into rocks.
