Question....would you ever quilt the block first (such as parallel lines or a grid) and then put the appliqué on?

Hi,Yes, you could absolutely do that. That would be a great way to "prep" a block if you don't know what or where you want to place an applique shape on a block.

Around the appliqué, the blanket stitches are they do with the sewing machine or by hand?? (The pink thread!) can I sew my applique by hand??

Your demonstration was so much help; however, I do have a question. I noticed you were sewing over your pins. Has this ever caused a problem with needle breakage for you: It looks like your pins are pretty small. Thank you for your teaching. I want to try this method.

Hi, No, this has not caused any issues. However, I recommend only sewing over pins when using very fine silk pins with no plastic or glass head on them.
