I'm guessing, since it was a group of young men, that they all wanted a bit of an adventure & the captain thought they'd go out to have a look at the seas with the idea that if it was too rough they could always turn around. Looks like they did try to but that put them beam on to big waves and that's really dangerous as we see.

Throw a throwable floatation device, throw two or three at your target. Point at your target for the helmsman to follow. Do not stop pointing as the boat bounces around. Without that surfer rescuer, this likely would have been a drowning recovery.

Passenger: "hey we lost a guy overboard!" Captain: immediately throws the props into reverse and pulls a sloppy three-point turn like he's trying to negotiate a parking lot in his SUV. What absolute clowns. Props to the surfer who very probably saved the guys life in some pretty wild and woolly conditions. Trying very clearly at 02:15 to get the idiot driving the boat to back off, then clearly indicating they should just head in because they not going to be any help in that swell. The "captain" didn't realise a damn thing, he was told to go away.

Everything that captain did was wrong in the entire video. 1) Deciding to go out 2) Almost flipping a boat 3) No lifejackets 4) His maneuvering after man goes overboard. 5) Almost running over guys in water 6) Almost dumps guy after they rescue him by accelerating with guy on stern, ladder down and rope in water. Complete clown. Shouldn't ever be allowed to drive a boat again.

While it could have been tragic, without experience on rough waters, you don’t learn. You can get as much book learning as you can but it doesn’t really bring the feel of losing someone overboard and then trying to maneuver the boat around to recover them. Especially in rough waters. There were certainly mistakes made. No life jackets being worn, no briefing by the captain on how to act on a boat in an emergency situation, just tough it out and hope we don’t lose anyone or the boat. Some lessons are easy. Some are hard. Hopefully the captain and passengers learned something today.

In this situation, people should remain calm. Take 10 to 30 seconds to just assess the situation. If I were the skipper on that boat, I've prepared a line and some floating item (life saver for example) and calmly drive idle speed next to the swimmer. Then pull him along the stream to more open water where waves were not that high, set propellers to neutral and pull the guy back to boat. Now they were zigzagging half planing in panic totally uncontrolled. They never gave themselves the time to think.
