What I’ve learned thus far, is that the best path to success is to buy a boat shaped like a shovel, pile as many people in the bow as possible, carry as much speed as you can, and remain undeterred as you submarine the first six or eight waves. That seems to always work out. Or.. I mean never works out.

Pro tip from an old chopper rider - Lean forward a bit if you're about to get slammed on your tailbone. If you're upright or leaning back hanging onto something, the shock goes straight into your lower spine and you compress a disc. If you're leaning forward, you'll just bounce down a bit further and then back up.

I don't understand why captains feel the need for speed. It doesn't make sense. You only need enough to maintain steerage. Am I wrong.
@GWNorth-db8vn

@@RaymondIngram-q9b - It's a balancing act here, and most of these guys have never learned to drive a boat. They just throttle down and try to power through. I'm a Great Lakes guy. We just stay on land when the water's like this, but I've been caught in sudden storms where you just keep the bow into the waves and crab across the wind until you reach sheltered water, like behind a point. You can ride over some huge waves if you're not trying to get somewhere. River rapids are easier. You can see what the water's doing ahead and it stays the same as you get to it.

Great info for boat designers and captains. The pontoon boats look totally unsuitable for rough water but the bouancy tubes are sealed, it has a wide beam and the platform is self draining so maybe I'm wrong!
@mikel9567
@mikel9567 Жыл бұрын
You are correct, they are unsuitable for rough water. Yes, the pontoons are sealed, but that doesn't mean they are good. There is more to a hull design, especially one meant for rough seas. They do make pontoons designed for "rougher seas" though. Usually you will find them in a tri-toon configuration with the middle toon moved forward. You will also find they incorporate raking on the toons as well.

Hull design on "Say 42" is REALLY good and a bit of a throwback to the standard "Chris Craft" design. When you see how it "navigates" waves, it is quite effective and the boat has a greater tendency to remain "flatter" in the water, rather than bounce as much as other boats.

I am no expert nor a boat owner (unfortunately), but do the boats take some damage to the frame when hitting these waves and slamming back down? Or are they built purposely to resist such impacts? I'm surprised people don't check weather and wind direction before leaving port especially the smaller boats. Even just a glance from land into the channel you can sort of understand whether its worth it or not. Ciao from Italy 😎

@@karlhoffman5290 I'd disagree. It's more appearance over substance. The very short distance of the transition between the very narrow 'V' at the waterline to the much wider, flare towards the deck leads to very brutal impacts when heading out through messy seas like this. Sure it cuts, but when the displaced water is forced upwards, it smashes into the flared hull above...

Hi 👋🏽 NeverCapt here and just fell down this rabbit hole within the past week. So, from my obvious expertise, I’d like to attempt to answer the question regarding the Tahoe 2150 (not only have I watched a good chunk of your vids, but the other day I checked out a few other creators too wanting to learn how not to be these people). The captain is too close to, or in the middle of, the inlet (from the drown perspective, near the jetty to their right looks reasonably flat). They endangered everyone by allowing anyone in the bow, allowing not only added weight but also increased possibilities of injury. Putting those people back towards the stern, trimming down, and maybe increasing the speed should help keep it on top of the waves. Hope I got this at least rightish 😊

I disagree, if it were meant for those conditions everyone in the boat wouldn't be soaked, especially with little to no coverage or windshield, and he wouldn't have had to turn around so soon. If it was a test for potential new buyers, it failed by the hunched over status of its passengers.

Thank you so much for your wonderful videos. Sometimes it seems that the boatdrivers have absolutely no clue. I am from northern Europe and we would not be allowed to go in such small boats and without a driving licence to the open sea. Well but our climate is much more harsher so it would be suicidal. Greetings from the Northsee🦭

I like the SAY42 Hull design. Very efficient event with what the driver let us saw on the few exemple on this inlet. This guy don't know how to run on waves clearly. Despite that the hull make an awesome job and that's the boat of this size I would like to have in rough conditions.

You can always tell the old salts by the number of fenders still hanging outside once they cast off! Over the years I've found dozens of them in the mangroves and on the beaches.

If youre single handing why would you take fenders in at the marina? asking for trouble. Wait until you got some open water around you and you can safely leave the helm

6:32 2nd time this guy comes through, going equally as slow in one of the fastest boats. It's begging for some throttle!

Right? Almost painful to watch the guy struggle with a boat that can rip out of there with no issues.
