What kind of luggage suits a modern classic motorcycle?
The only answer is the waxed canvas kind.
In this new type of video, I'll be doing very short reviews of the things I use and often get asked about. First up, it's my own canvas bags.
Not only do I use them myself for everything from carrying camping gear and cameras, but they're an intrinsic part of how I keep this channel running. So it's about time I devoted a few minutes to talking about them.
These review videos will only be a small part of the channel going forward, but in times when I can't ride, they'll provide a way to not leave the channel dead for weeks on end.
If you'd like more information on the Digley Pannier bag, you can find it on the secure Classic Rides website by clicking this link: www.classic-ri...
I hope you don't mind these short review videos and that you'll view them as an extra to the main channel content.
More than that, I hope that you'll consider leaving a 'like' on the video or subscribing to the channel if you thought it was helpful. Your Like or Subscription lets KZbin know that you've enjoyed my video, which in turn helps push the video out to more people, it's one of the most genuine ways to support the channel and it costs nothing at all.
Or, if you feel like my mini films are worth £1 of your money, then it would be a huge help if you would consider actively supporting the channel by becoming a Channel Member. Being a member means you'll get access to a little extra content, such as honest gear reviews and the odd behind the scenes video too. But mainly it's a way of supporting the channel and helping me make more of the main travel vlog videos.
Finally, if you'd like more information on the channel, the bike or my travels, please feel free to hop over to my website where you can find articles, photos and journals on everything Classic Rides.

Thank you,
Matt.

Just ordered a pair, thank you for taking the time to answer my emails. While i wouldn't call them cheap, they are cheaper then just about any other classic panniers. I also like that it has a modern buckle to open it. Using a belt style buckle closure or those aluminum hooks is a pain.

Thanks Mike, I must admit I was getting a bit annoyed with using normal buckles myself, especially with gloves on, clips are must easier. You're right, they're not 'cheap' for a bag, but relative to most other motorcycle panniers I'd say they're pretty competitive 🙂

I have a pair of the day tripper bags and they have been great! My T120 Bonnie has up swept exhaust pipes and absolutely no issues with the heat from the exhaust. I have used the pannier as a computer bag and received several nice compliments and no one guessed it was a “motorcycle bag”. Well done Matt! On another note, my son stole my Classic Rides t-shirt so I need to replace that. 😂

Thank you so much for this video. I am wanting to buy a new Bonneville sometime between now and next Spring. But I do not want to put leather bags on it because I don't want it to look like a Harley. The canvas bags are perfect for a Bonneville, they are classic looking just like the Bonneville. Thanks again, Ride safe and enjoy every journey.

Firm believer in waxed cotton. When young it was the only waterproof material available. My Belstaff, Barbour and a few other brands are still going strong. Some 40 yrs or more old. Re-wax every few years. I like those bags. Have been looking at then for a while now. I have a 2023 BMWR9T UGS which they would look really good and suitable on. Trying to figure out a set of unobtrusive mounts and change the exhaust with a lower pipe so symmetrical bags can be used. Thanks. Good review and vid. These winter days are tough. Only 5 degrees F today with a few inches of snow on the ground. Burrrrr!

I’ll be getting these bags from you Matt, when I get another T120. They are by far the best looking style for this bike and if all it takes is a re-waxing every year or two, I’m good with that. I’ve actually just waxed a rucksack I picked up from a local charity shop, here in Edinburgh, which will go with these very well. Have you considered supplying a waterproof drawstring cover for them which would maybe put some peoples minds at ease if they have any doubts? Just a thought. 👍

Hello again Matt!! Since you have made this video, I would like you to help me with a question I have. I already know that a rear trunk doesn't fit a Bonneville but out of necessity I have to assemble something in which I can put two full-face helmets since when I go out with my wife it is a problem where to leave them with a minimum of security since leaving them tied to the motorcycle may be stolen. What would you advise me? Thank you very much for everything and congratulations on your great work.
@ClassicRides
@ClassicRides 7 ай бұрын
Hi Julio, that’s a tough puzzle to solve. For just one helmet you can use the helmet tab under the seat, I wonder why triumph didn’t put one on the other side of the bike also, so you could fit two helmets. Personally I would just use something like a flexible bicycle lock put around the chin bars, and then loop it through something on your bike, the rear grab bar would work if you have one.
@julioromero921
@julioromero921 7 ай бұрын
OK Matt, what I didn't want was to leave them out because of possible theft. I will look for a trunk that is not rigid and that can be closed with some type of padlock. Thanks for your help.@@ClassicRides

If you have a look on the website listing, there’s an illustration of how they attach, but it’s a generic fitment so there’s a few ways to do it depending on how your bike is set up.

Love your channel. All my life I have used very similar bags for canoe tripping, (Duluth Bags). I just purchased a T100 and I'd like to make one or two of the Digley bags work on my bike. Do you need to mount pannier rails to make them work? I live in the US, (Vermont). Is it possible to have these bags shipped to the US? Also, I am started to think through what to do as far as a rack for my bike. I do not carry a pillion. I like the look of your rack because it does not have a grab rail interfering with the load. Could you share what rack that is on your bike?
@ClassicRides
@ClassicRides 7 ай бұрын
Hi Rob, you could in theory mount the bags to the frame rails under the seat, using either the attached straps or with the quick release lobster clasps and straps. Personally I'd recommend having pannier rails though as they serve to stop the bags from swinging inwards into your wheel, so it's more of a safety thing rather than anything else, although the rails do make for easy attachment also. It's no problem to ship bags to the US, you just need to be aware that you might get an import customs tax applied when they arrive. It's a bit out of my control but I've done my best to mitigate it by not charging tax here. The rack is actually a Triumph one, but it's the version that comes with a backrest instead of a grabrail. I just have the backrest removed as I wanted an extension of the seat surface with nothing sticking up in the way.

@ClassicRides
@ClassicRides 7 ай бұрын
Glad to hear you’re enjoying your Bonnie. The pannier rails are from Motone Customs and the rack is actually a Triumph one. It’s meant to have a back rest attached, but I took it off as I wanted a flat area to lay bags on, which you don’t get with the normal grab handle & parcel rack.
@mightymaule
@mightymaule 7 ай бұрын
I’m very grateful for your quick reply, Matt. I’ve just seen a similar luggage rack from Motone without the back rest as I’d like to just use it for extra luggage space. I’m pleased to see the fixings looks like they don’t share the same anchor point (suspension bolts). Looks like I’ll be doing some shopping with them. Thanks again and safe riding.

a question re the Digley Motorcycle Pannier Bag. Does the bag impede on pillion passenger comfort ? Presumably they will fit the standard Triumph pannier rail. Have you had any issues with the bag sliding back along the pannier rail and in effect starting to fall off. I am getting my T120 in March and looking into luggage options.
@ClassicRides
@ClassicRides 7 ай бұрын
Hi Graeme, the bag actually sits in the gap under the pillion legs, so there’s no interference with them when they’re on the bike. Each bag comes with a little Velcro tab that can be used to wrap around something if you’re having problems with the bag slipping backwards as it can happen. But it very much depends on the bike, pannier rails and what method you use to attach the bag. It’s not a problem I’ve experienced personally, but there are ways to stop it happening if it does.

Sorry, I love your chanel, but I hate retro waxed luggage. Wasted money on a Burly Bag tank bag for my Bonneville 1200 T120 as recomended by Stuart Fillingham (who's channel I no longer watch, BTW). God awful POS. Besides realising that I dont like waxed cotton luggage, the Burly Bag tank bag would simply not stay on the tank. I could go on for paragraphs about the poor design, but whats the point; one is either into that sort of equipment or not.😎

@jerryandnancywertzbaugher7 can you comment on the Burly Brand Tank Bag a bit more? I have been thinking of getting one. Mostly for the durability and sustainability aspect. I’m not too concerned about it sticking to the tank, but more concerned about it being a tail-bag (straps and such).
@jerryandnancywertzbaugher7778
@jerryandnancywertzbaugher7778 4 ай бұрын
@@ldane1991 It will work much better as a tail bag than a tank bag. Still it's too ecpensive for the quality and utility; for me at least. Even though I have three retro bikes (New Boneville, and two vintage '70s Yamahas) I'm not a fan of oils cotton.
