That sudden horrible thought when Jim saw the vascular arm actually is a not yet explainable psychological phenomena. Sometimes we have sudden imagination of harming ourself, like when we looking over a balcony sometimes we feel the urge to jump down. As one can expect, such model encourages this exact kind of shovelware[-ish] games. I do that flapping thing too when my mind decides to bring up images of scalpels/knives/razors dragging across my wrists/forehead (when I wear a hat for some reason the forehead thing drives me insane if it pops into my mind).
