I was 8 years old and remember it fairly well --------- knew that I liked it a lot ------------ my parents let me watch anything scary, I wanted! -------- on Friday nights i'd stay up till 2 in the morning watching, "shock theater" out of Detroit and the intro (x-ray skull and scary music would flash on fast, and would shock me, lol) ----- kept my head under the blanket (laid on the floor) in anticipation of the show starting ---------- the suspense ------- yeowwwww

This was the last episode of the series, which despite having high ratings, was cancelled after 14 episodes. Parents across the country complained that the show gave their children nightmares. When Mr. Dahl signs off without fanfare, he noticeably does not state his usual comment, "We'll have ANOTHER ONE for you next week."

What a bummer. Studio heads should've respected the audience that was giving them high ratings for this excellent show and produced more episodes! Instead, they bowed to people who couldn't be bothered to properly parent their children by putting them to bed or changing the channel or shutting off the TV.

Yes, parents complained to CBS that "'WAY OUT" was scaring their kids too much. And James T. Aubrey- that weasel of a CBS network president- had no intention of offending ANYONE.....and squelching producers like David Susskind who got in the way of his doubling the network's profits over a five year period. So, Liggett & Myers was convinced to sponsor a package of MCA/Revue's pre-1959 repeats of "SCHLITZ PLAYHOUSE"- as "ADVENTURE THEATER"- for the rest of the summer. In the fall, Aubrey scheduled in its place a nice little bland sitcom that offended no one- a TV adaptation of "FATHER OF THE BRIDE", for other sponsors [General Mills, Campbell Soup].

All the episodes were donated to the TV and Radio Museum (now the Paley Institute) by David Susskind, the executive producer. An employee there told me that the episode SOFT FOCUS was responsible for the series demise. More irate parents phoned☎ in complaints for that episode than for any of the others! So actually, we can thank makeup artist DICK SMITH for the show's untimely cancellation. 😕

Three of the fourteen original episodes are not available on You Tube: The aforementioned Soft Focus, The Down Car, and Button Button. That's too bad, as those three are pretty good, as I recall. Unfortunately, the only place to see those three episodes is at the Paley Museum on the coasts. As far as scary makeup, as a kid, I found False Face to be the scariest of all. Dick Smith was a makeup wizard.

I'm surprised that the stories weren't better given Rahm's involvement. Not surprised it folded after one season especially since it was up against The Twilight Zone.

The only significant improvement from this show to OSB and Twilight Zone was a better musical score. The steady pitch used here periodically is very annoying.

A lot of writers must have had bad experiences with women! Some are shrews, some are nags, some are greedy...but we can always sympathize the hen pecked husband. Like in Rebecca, the wife was so evil, Hitchcock made him a hero for committing murder! 😏 it's entertaining, but so wrong. You really sympathize with the wife, she should join her precious Stanley.
