So we accidently took a break from PT just because I recorded a whole video last week with them and the microphone wasn’t on. So, obviously I was a little miffed at that. But I didn’t mean to go TWO WHOLE WEEKS without some sweet, sweet Porcupine Tree.
This was a treat like it always is. The chorus is just dripping with angst and pain and regret and it sounds amazing. Gavin was also going off in this song (Especially the solo at the end) and I’m here for it.

Regarding what you said about the crowd just standing there, this show was in Tilburg in the Netherlands, where (at least according to my own experiences, having played a few shows there myself a little over a decade ago) a significant portion of the crowd has had their fair share of some of the Devil's Lettuce🙂 If I was high as a kite and in that crowd, I probably would be completely stationary most of the time, just taking it in and trying my best to pick my jaw up from the floor🤘

The other vocalist is John Wesley, or “Wes” as he’s known in PT circles. He started with PT during In Absentia, and played in all their live shows until last year’s tour, even contributed to one of Steven’s solo concerts. I call him “the fifth Porcupine”….

In 2005, a girl named Arielle Daniel, who was 17 and a huge Porcupine Tree fan, killed herself with her friend (and possibly girlfriend) Heather Bates, who was 14, by throwing themselves in front of a train. Arielle had an IPod and was supposedly listening to Porcupine Tree at the moment. When the band came to know about Arielle's story, they decided to make a song in her memory, that song became "Way Out Of Here", replacing the original fifth track of the album, "Cheating The Polygraph". _"Out in the train tracks/I dream of escape/But a song comes onto my IPod/And I realize it's getting late"_

Wow what a tragic story…. I’ve been there though as a lost, bored kid. That was my story for sure. So sad for them :( but what a beautiful tribute PT has done for them on this album/track.

‘Start of something beautiful’ would be another good pick. Also maybe some more Steven Wilson solo work ‘Luminol’, ‘Refuge’, ‘Ancestral’, ‘Detonation’ there is plenty to go at.

In terms of the song's meaning, I think it connects with the overall albums story of the teen generation at the time of the album's release - one of dissociation from prescription drug, emptiness of what's around them. I always took this song to be contemplating suicide or non-existence, sure a few parts are relationship/breakup based but with all the imagery they usually use for this song I feel its more generally a desire to disappear in whatever form that may take.

That makes sense…. Since the album has like an all encompassing theme and then the songs make up the concept. And that tracks… just trying to disappear no matter what. I’ve been there.

It would make perfect sense to do an album reaction for PT stuff, even if you have heard some of the tracks already. They have so much more impact in context with the tracks around them.

Its more specifically about 2 young fans who comitted suicide by train while listening to Porcupine Tree. Train iconograpghy features heavily in PT lyrics so im assuming thats why they chose that.. I believe one of them actually ran their myspace page back in the day.

Really lovely to see PPT back on this channel! Other great tracks to do would be "Lazarus", "Trains" or "Pure Narcotic" for the emotional ones, "The sound of Muzak" for some cool lyrics or "The start of something beautiful", which is beautiful, but also more heavy at times. Preferablly the studio versions for me (even though PPT has some crazy live performances). Also I hope part 3 of MAYH is still coming up? really dont need the Bonus tracks, but the ending of the album with "Karma + Epiloge" is literally my favourite part.

this is a song about a poccupine teen fan who started their MySpace page who apparently killed herself playing " chicken " with a train while listening to poccupine tree on her I pod

I heard this from another reactor who was reading from something and I never followed up to confirm it... he said that Steven wrote the song after hearing about a teenage girl fan of Porcupine Tree who committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. It was discovered that a PT song was the track playing on her music player as she did it. If that's true it is desperately sad and I can't imagine how Steven felt on hearing it. The lyrics seem to tie in with the story but I really hope it isn't true.

I read news reports linked from the song's Wikipedia page. They didn't mention the song playing as or before they died (it was two girls together) but it is reported on the Wikipedia page that one was a fan and Steven dedicated a song to her at a concert that her family attended after her death.

@@L33Reacts I had tickets to see them in November just gone (didn't actually see them because covid 😖) and I was more disappointed that "Wes" (guy who does the chorus vox) who had never actually been a member, wasn't with them on that tour than I was about Colin Edwins no longer being a member. I'd love to have heard him singing with Steven
