Yup, Waylon wasn't the best player in the world or even close but he was unique. I remember the Maestro phase shifters and yes that is what he used. Not common in country music then and still isn't. I suppose that's why it was so unique to his sound. I worked many Waylon shows as an audio engineer and he was a guest on our live radio broadcast many times. I always looked forward to it. Basic simple good stuff.

You should do one on Ain't livin' long like this. It always seems to be a crowd pleaser. Of course, you could just do a lesson on Waylonisms. He definitely had his own style.

I enjoy your teaching style and have learned guite a bit thus far. I'm having a hard time trying to get the classic country sound. What pedals do you recommend I get to achieve the sounds of Waylon, Merle and Buck Owen's. I'm using a Fender Telecaster. Thanks...
@CountryGuitarChops3 жыл бұрын
The tone comes from the guitar and amp, and the pedals are just the sugar coating on top. What kind of an amp are you using? It's hard to beat the sound of a deluxe reverb, or just about any other fender amp. The only pedals I use for songs like this are the compressor, which is on all the time, and some reverb. I might have a little bit of delay going on, but very subtle for a song like this. Realistically, a song like this will sound just fine with just reverb. Oops, I almost forgot, this is a "Waylon" song, so it's got a "Phase Shifter" effect on the rhythm guitar parts, which I talked about in this video. Did you watch it far enough to get that?
@billmenz71133 жыл бұрын
@@CountryGuitarChops I'm using a Blackstar amp and playing around with a Spark amp,I know they aren't the best but just wanted something small to get playing again.
@CountryGuitarChops3 жыл бұрын
@@billmenz7113 That could be why your not getting tone your looking for. I can't say for sure because I haven't played through them. If you have a local music store, you might consider going there with your guitar and playing through various amps to see which one best to you. Ideally, for this kind of tone you want that fender amp tone, and even the cheaper solid state amps will have that tone.

I saw a video of Brian Setzer back in the day when they had a standup bass and just a drum set in him and I don’t know what the occasion was, but he says for Eddie Van Halen to get his ass up there on the stage. And Ed Van Halen came up to the stage, and then he says Steve Miller get up here and here comes Steve Miller, then he says Eric Clapton, and just on and on like 10 other of the best guitarist in the world at the time, I think, even Les Paul he said was on that stage, and then he says Waylon Jennings and they all get up on the stage and played.

@@NICKWAPPERER117 Go Browns! Actually Waylon played with a very thick pick if I remember correctly. But the biggest secret to tone is touch and feel. A lot of the skin on his thumb made contact with the string.

You gotta turn that E string down if you want it to sound like Waylon.
@CountryGuitarChops10 ай бұрын
The song is in the key of B, which means the E is the 4 chord. I have a feeling you don't know what I'm talking about here, but a drop D would not work in the key of B. If you looked, you might have noticed that I use the same kind of drop D tuner that Waylon used on his tele, and I use it when ever possible. The key of B is not one of those times. And I guaranty you that Waylon didn't use it on this song when he played it in B either.
@brockbusa2110 ай бұрын
@@CountryGuitarChops I literally know nothing about the guitar. Waylon is my favorite musician and I just remember him saying in an interview that his sound came from turning the E down. That may have been a particular song .
@CountryGuitarChops10 ай бұрын
@@brockbusa21 No worries. If you were to ask any guitar what the Waylon "sound" is, 100% of them would tell you it's the phaser pedal he used on just about every song. The drop D tuning would be used on songs in the key of A and D, and possibly G. With that said, he may have played this song live in the key of A once in a while if he had throat issues, so then he would have used the D tuning. Have a great day!
