Who would have thought that watching a self driving vehicle moving through traffic would turn out to be such a relaxing experience? Awesome content!

Haha the intro with the computer voice exactly being the same as Waymo (-> Google, I guess?) really confused me first :D nice one!
@aprilj18383 жыл бұрын
I got a kick out of that too! He custom programmed the destination in the car to repeat that through the speakers. We laughed and laughed about it! Just loving all things Waymo, even the tiny details, like the voice of the “Waymo Driver” and the entry music.

Please continue! I really like this! And all those things, like the problem stopping no, is nice to see. Shows a bit of how the system 'thinks' and so on. And i really enjoy when you try to make it hard for the system. I thought of one thing: That spot you put out cones in to make it reverse in a tricky spot: Can you find some peple with cars, and fill the parking spaces to make it more difficult for the car?
@JJRicks3 жыл бұрын
Great idea! Yea now that I know what it looks like when the car gives up and asks for help, I wonder where the "line" is for that parking lot in particular

Greetings from Canada! Me and my visually impaired friend visit Phoenix from time to time and I do not drive. This looks amazing! Question: are there areas left where there are stores and shopping area to visit? Not planning a trip yet, just curious.

Yes, plenty of those!

Thank you so much. Dividing the video into chapters helps a lot. Please also share more of your feeling since you have probably more experience than anybody else. How you see Waymo 5 years down the road? I do not see 100% replacing a driver, but probably 95-98%?

LOL "with zero interventions". Haha. Yeah we also saw that recent Tesla FSD beta video. Its funny because Waymo basically never needs interventions.
@JJRicks3 жыл бұрын
I'm starting to get frustrated at the amount of attention those silly cherry picked FSD videos are getting. Only one way I can get a video to be an algorithm buster I guess. If you can't beat em, join em

@@JJRicks heh well realistically, the popularity of Tesla and Musk and his other projects is not something anyone can compete with on like a rational or merit-based level. Tesla cars, SpaceX, and Musk are basically like a religion. I mean I am actually a huge fan of SpaceX and everything, but just saying that the following for Musk and his companies is fanatical on a legendary level. So that is part of what you are dealing with. here is a short documentary that demonstrates what I am talking about: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmTYZomLmZyYr5o

Waymo still uses remote assistence which would count as an intervention :)
@JJRicks3 жыл бұрын
Right, but I didn't see any of the telltale signs of it in this video, namely hesitating and turning on hazard lights to be specific. So no interventions :D

Nice video, I like the commentary. The ending was interesting, starting with the “inconsiderate” motorcycle. I wonder why it missed the turn into the post office driveway! The cul-de-sac u turn around was interesting navigating around the parked car and truck. The interaction with the bicyclist made me a little nervous and all the garbage bins out in the street!

Waymo has said that the cars don't need an internet connection to drive. So I don't think it streams the map. More likely, the computer just glitched displaying the map. In any case, we see that the car was still able to drive autonomously.
@JJRicks3 жыл бұрын
Ah yea I read that in the AMA, forgot that somehow when this happened. Though I was thinking more the visual map data rather than the... yea actually that doesn't make much sense at all haha

Highway merging seems like it will be a tricky thing for AI to perfect. You have to go up to highway speed on the onramp, yet you don't have the right of way when you merge. It sounds like a paradox, if you stop and think about it. Maybe Waymo and other self-driving companies will need to concede that it can never be 100% safe to highway merge, and the AI will need to take some aggressive risks at times?
