One of the creepiest scenes in the whole True Detective series in general. I'm guessing these are the ghosts of the people Hays has killed in his lifetime...

I talked about joining the marines with a family member, not in the military but criminal records and they told me “be prepared when you take a life, sometimes you still see them, still hear them.”

Every aspect of this scene is haunting. The framing is claustrophobic, with the camera focused entirely on Wayne's upper body and the "ghosts" crowding in behind him. The camera is slowly moving away from the orange glow of the desk lamp to focus on the darkness behind Wayne, whereupon the "ghosts" step forward from the shadows. Wayne looks like he has this intense feeling of unspecific dread the whole time, like he's vaguely aware that his slain foes have returned with malevolent intentions (maybe they're waiting for him to die so he can join them in the murk of Sheol). It has a nightmare-like quality, where old memories come back and you're cognizant that something is wrong but you're unable to put your finger on it or get away. It's just viscerally creepy and nerve-racking in a way that season one never touched on. The horror from Wayne's past will inevitably drag him back down as his mind decays.

Well written. This portends the seasons final scene, with the flashback of Hays in a twilight jungle, staring with wild-eyes before disappearing into the brush

Anyone else remember that scene where he was confused, looking through the rooms for his family? Then it goes back to the earlier timeline, and his younger self see's the freaking door move... That shit scared me so bad, gave me the creeps. I have two episodes left, so maybe it will be explained how that happened, but man... Scary as hell to see that door move.

Mikey Holland yeah the writer loves that stuff. He played a lot with it during season 1 when Rust went on about the fourth dimension and how time is a circle instead of being linear. It's really meta cuz you could say we're the fourth dimensional beings looking at the story not from start to end but in a circle. Really cool stuff

I'm of the idea that that's how our reality works. Things like ghosts aren't so alien as spirits.. but with time being a pond as we experience it like a river I cannot say I'm surprised when anomalies pop up.

It happened few times with Wayne. When he is burning his suit after Harris’s death, young Wayne senses something watching him. Also happens in a bar scene.
