The man revolutionized hockey. He's an icon. I'm a Canucks fan, and though I have no relationship to the former owners, I still apologize to Wayne for the way he was harassed by the owners. I should hate the Kings for the recent rivalry, but Gretzky really made his mark in LA. A legend, and he deserves more credit than he gets.

I just wanted to write a comment after reading all the comments of this page regarding Gretzky, whether he is the greatest player or if he was in today's NHL, he wouldn't have the points he has today, or even back then all the defense and goalies sucked. I was born in 1977 and got to see a lot of the Oilers and became a huge fan in there best of 5 series against Montreal where they put the Canadiens out 3 straight. I had grown up in a house of all Montreal fans, and cheered Montreal until that moment. It's 2015 now and I have since then to this day, been an Oiler fan, The debate against Gretzky of whether he is the greatest of all time is actually quite silly and the only ones that take him as not being the best are Gretzky haters. The facts are simple, he changed the face of hockey, holds records that will never ever be broken and is the only player in the NHL that has his sweater number retired by the NHL. He built a market in the American states that barely knew what hockey was. One has to understand that at his playing greatness, there were other amazing players as well. Lemieux, Bossy, Dionne, Messier, Bourque and even Wendel Clark. Everyone played the same style of defense and all the Goalies were about even in skills, much like today. But Gretzky had vision, understanding of the ice and how the game moved. He wasn't the best skilled, or the fastest or the most muscle to force his way to the net to score, he was just simply a hockey player ahead of everyone else that relied on their skill, Gretzky had the vision and the mentality of the game. Gretzky also had one more thing, one of the greatest teams that ever existed and in 1984 there were 9 All stars on the Western All stars that came from the Oilers. So Gretzky had great players around him, and even those greats couldn't put up the numbers that Gretzky did. You can't talk about how Gretzky wouldn't score the point totals today, it's just a different breed of NHL. But to date, he is the greatest player ever in the NHL because he broken all the records, created new ones, and then made some that will never be broken. So whether you hate him for leaving Edmonton, or because he is Canadian, or because he could have stayed in Edmonton but chose to leave because he felt outcasted by Pocklington, or whether he help grown the game in the sun belt, the facts are facts, he was and is the Face of Hockey. There isn't any debate.

Also Song Andong became the first Chinese born player drafted by an NHL team when the New York Islanders selected him in 2015. China does have an ice hockey program that is actively improving player development and marketing the game to new audiences around the country. Most Chinese could not recognize Wayne Gretzky but in 10 years maybe a player like Connor McDavid will be very famous in China.

Jared Lewis Showing the clip of Conan on SNL was staged before the interview, Conan started talking about his appearance on SNL to open for the clip, but then Gretzky interrupted and changed the subject before Conan could finish was he going to say. That is why Conan started talking about himself again after Gretzky finished talking. Gretzky almost interrupted Conan again before he finally got a chance to stop the interview for the clip. I guess Gretzky didn't know they would show the clip. Definitely was an awkward interview. :/
@dunlap4info11 жыл бұрын
jeff cowen Yeah, Gretzky interrupted Conan when he was trying to setup the SNL clip, that is why Conan immediately started talking about himself again. He was just trying to properly setup the clip! I live in FSJ, B.C. but I'm a Canucks fan. A Japanese newlywed couple approached Gretzky at a Dennys' in Calgary in the early 80's. He was with Semenko and some others. My future English language student asked for a picture. Mr. Gretzky spent 5 minutes conversing with them. Bruce McNall -the LA Kings owner who brought Gretzky and eventually went to the clink for fraud, etc. -Gretzky visited him in jail and never gave up on his friend. When Conan O'Brian discusses Gretzky going to Los Angeles-the Canadian teams that had to play the 1980's Oilers- Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg Jet fans were ecstatic-we get to watch Gretzky in our division but the Oilers are being broken up! (Coffey was already gone). In 1998, Gretzky was on the bench ! for Canada for the deciding shootout

I love the argument people always use that he was playing against worse defence and what not, the point is the gap between wayne gretzky and the other players he was playing with was larger then any other player today. yes sidney crosby is a better player than wayne gretzky was in his day. but training techniques and the game has changed alot since then. While crosby is technically a better player, the gap between crosby and other players in the nhl while still large is smaller than it was between gretzky and the other players in his day. wayne gretzky made other nhlers look like a joke

People who don't watch hockey will say Michael Jordan but Gretzky was insane. Gretzky holds a ridiculous amount of records including all time goals/assists/points. There was also a benchmark achievement of scoring 50 goals in 50 games which very few players have ever done. Wayne scored 50 in 39 games. I love MJ but there are players with better stats than him. So when it comes to outright domination of your sport, it has to be Gretzky.
@birdman4birdlegs8 жыл бұрын
Big time basketball player/ lover but I have to go with Gretzky. Not just for the sheer amount of records he broke, but the fact he was also so skilled that he could achieve everything he has while being physically under powered compared to a large portion of the NHL. MJ was obviously amazing though as well :)
@11DNA118 жыл бұрын
Well... Considering Gretzky's numbers are so far ahead of everyone else, i'll say Gretzky. Think about this. If he scored 0 goals in his career, he'd still be the leading scorer of all time with assists only.

Wayne's a nice guy but the trade ruined hockey, after Bruce Mcnall was allowed to do the trade, players salaries skyrocketed, and Canadian teams with very little money were no longer able to compete. The last Canadian team to win a cup was Montreal and that was well over ten years ago now.
@scottc471610 жыл бұрын

I'm a Canadian, but the trade helped the game grow a lot. Just look at how many players getting drafted out of the USA now.
