JD....You're not the first person to say that. I'm from Burlington, Ontario same region as Wayne Gretzky who was playing for Brampton, Ontario. I'm a little over a year older. Yet I played against him a few times in the 1970s. He was generating all sorts of new coverage at the time as a teenage player scoring lots of goals. I had a coach who at the time didn't seem to understand or appreciate that his father had chosen to put him in our bantam division as a peewee aged player for the extra competition and challenge he wasn't getting in his own age group. My coach on his first look at him, in a game where we held him to just two goals scored, came away with this infamous line I'll never forget, "He's good but I don't know what all the fuss is. He's too small and he's never gonna play pro!" How very wrong he was!!

To be arguably the greatest hockey player ever, t's almost unfathomable to think that 3 games into his NHL career, Orr had a knee injury, and consequently had TWELVE surgeries on both knees over his career. And keep in mind when Orr played, they didn't have scopes and the technology to make a "clean" procedure. Each of his 12 operations were about going in and tearing the knee up. It really is mind-blowing to think that as great as Orr was, imagine HOW much greater he could have been without his chronic knee problems. Similarly with Mario and his chronic bad back that plagued him throughout much of his career.

In many ways, all three of them were the best. I think better than Gordie Howe mind you Gordie is all time second on the scoring numbers total. Mario was in ways better than Gretzky on a pure scoring basis but he had physical advantages. Those physical advantages (height and size) also made him vulnerable to back injury. Bobby Orr in my mind was the best skater ever and was magic. But to me Gretzky was too small and too skinny to be good. Yet somehow he was just the best. I think that counts in my book to make him the number 1 just because of his sheer numbers given his puny size.

The few times I saw Gretzky playing in person I watched him like a hawk. The guy would conserve energy away from the direct action. Gretzky would almost park and hide near the mid ice boards watching everything. His defender would tend to lose focus. Then Gretz would explode and arrive at the right place at the right time and be a couple of steps ahead of developments taking place on the ice. He had an incredible sense of flow and where to be. Orr was completely different. Just give him the puck. He had a commanding presence on the ice and the game revolved around him. Orr could keep the puck away from a team on a power play for almost the whole 2 minutes. Never saw a player like that. You simply couldn't get the puck away from him.

Orr is very humble, he never thought he was a great talent, just worked harder than anyone. Messier is very humble, he knows he is not the best player at the table, but definitely the toughest with talent. Wayne is humble in that he too knows he is not the best player, more of a product of a time in hockey and a great supporting cast. If Sid was at the table instead of still playing as the best player in hockey for almost 10 straight years, longer than any other player in history, he would be the most humble, he just loves to play hockey but would yield to the hosts pick of the greatest goal by the greatest player ever. Mario is the most wonderful role model, coaches his son in local hockey games, settled down with his childhood schoolmate, maintains his roots living in Canada as well as Pittsburgh, stayed with the same team his entire life, masterful business decisions with his team, a player, an owner He towers above them all.

Oh the memories of a better time. Orr lights up a room with his charisma. The most gifted pure hockey talent. #1 Lemieux so cool as a cucumber. Graceful. Beautiful on the ice. Gretzky incredible work ethic, in before everyone - out after everyone, hockey has been a lifelong passion, no one else can match that passion. His Dad was the goal of most men in the day, his passion is what gave birth to Wayne’s Messier - very strong. Strong impact on the game, but that chair belongs to Bobby Howe. Orr, Howe, Gretzky, Lemieux. Howe is so missed.

Sad but true... But he does have one thing over Wayne and all of them else... He won 6 cups and 2 without Wayne and Coffee. Wayne never won without him! He also has more game winning goals then Wayne and everyone else on that panel... He's also 3rd all time in career points in the NHL. So it's hard to argue with numbers!

If Lemieux would have been healthy and started with a team loaded with superstars like Gretzky did. Yes I am sure he would've passed him. Ask any hockey players.. When you play with good players...you make more points.
@Yorkwoods446 жыл бұрын
He would’ve came close but was never on par to have equaled Gretzky.
@crushit95766 жыл бұрын
Of course he wasn't on par to have equaled Gretzky... He started with the worst team in hockey. Unlike Gretzky who started with an all star team. And Lemieux had cancer. Anyone who has or had cancer knows that it's always something you have in mind even if you beat it. Cancer always comes back.

I would argue that Mark Messier had the best hockey CAREER of all time (at least since the 80s). I realize he wasn't the most talented or most skilled player like Gretz, Orr, Lemieux, or many others, but in terms of career accomplishments, accolades, winning, relevance, realizing his full potential, maximizing his opportunities, being built for the game, competitive nature, being in the spotlight, handling the media, fame, fortune, being a leader, longevity, production, playing a complete game, etc., I think Messier had the most COMPLETE career of any hockey player. Lemieux and Orr's careers were interrupted by injuries, so as great as they were, they left a lot on the table. Gretzky had his best years in Edmonton, but once he left, his career went "down hill" from there. Messier, on the other hand, ascended to new heights after he became Edmonton's captain. And of course, his 93-94 season and cup with the Rangers will go down as the most memorable cup run of all time. Again, I'm not talking about skills or talents, but as far as career, I would take Messier's over anyone else's. If not Messier, who would you say had the best NHL CAREER since the 80s?
@kevintieu519811 ай бұрын
Messier didn't win as many personal accolades and trophies, but he did win MVP and Pearson twice, plus one Conn Smythe. Those five wins should erase any doubt that he was elite. His 6 cups are head and shoulders above any of his peers since the 80s. And before anybody says he was riding Gretzky's coattails, Messier did win the Conn Smythe when the Oilers won their first Cup. He also captained the team to their last cup, proving his importance during the dynasty.

All of these guys were truly great players with unique skills, but even though I am a lifelong Rangers fan the most amazing player I ever saw was Bobby Orr. Even with a bad knee, his skating ability was incredible. More than once I saw him kill off a minute or more shorthanded all by himself....skating at, around & away from the entire opposing team. It was the Harlem Globetrotters, except on skates.
@MAel-qh3sn6 жыл бұрын
Only wish Bobby could have played in the 80', during the best time for stars - who were protected by the Semenkos, McSorleys etc.,- with 2 good knees. Wow he might be 5th leading scorer in history.
