True story, I was once sitting in the third seat from the door, at the bar, to my left, closer to the door, was John Mclaughlin. It was like 2002/3. After one of the tunes, probably shirts off, or something, he looks at me and say, "Holy shit." And I said, "Right?"

That's a great story and totally unsurprising. Anyone who knows their stuff would have the same reaction. Wayne's an original.

Wayne Krantz' music and playing is my antidote to standard pop and popular styles of guitar playing/shredding. Juggles my guitar brain. So fresh and free sounding rhythms, what a trip!

We can all share records. I've got about 7-8 from the pre 2002 era. I'm glad I had the chance to see about 100 of these shows, maybe more.

i would put this exact trio up with the best of all time, like the Coltrane Quartet and Brad Mehldau trio with Jorge Rossy. not a direct comparison of music style but in the tightness and unreal musicianship on display as they support each other and basically crush it together

joe hundertmark Right?? Their absolute unity here - keeping in mind it’s COMPLETELY improvised other than the heads - is mind-blowing. Sounds like they composed it all beforehand. I would say this is one of Krantz’s most powerful nights ever. Shame he didn’t include much of it on Your Basic Live '06.

Ya he is lol. It certainly made this night interesting. I love how quickly he can go into a solid groove though, like at 21:03. He's a groove master when he wants to be.

Good to hear! I have to agree. He was really single-minded here, not as scattered as he sometimes is. These improvisations are more like compositions.

@fearthechin I think the date was 9/21/06, a Thursday night at the 55. Oddly, the date given on YBL '06 is 9/22/06 (at least seen on discogs - I don't have the liner in front of me), but that should have been 9/22/05 to match Jackson/Almond. 9/21/06 was Jackson/Carlock as you say.

Having watched these guys in the 55 Bar since 1997, Tune 4? Keith playing, and turning over groves that fast. While changing up HH chicks at the same time... is why, as a drummer you had to be there. I love when they play fast.

Wayne and this whole unit is fantastic but every now and then it would be nice to hear live versions of "Whippersnapper" , "Dove Gloria", "Dream Called Love" and "Specific People,places or ideas" etc... to always be in spontaneous jam improv mode is hit or miss even for great musicians like these guys...Jamming is usually when musicians get a chance to stretch, experiment and try new things to increase their musical vocabulary...Wayne's obviously not interested in broadening his audience in favor of following his improvisational muse, but the man has an awesome body of work that he refuses to tap into, - as a fan It would be hard for me to go see Wayne more than once or twice(pay$) because some jams can be tedious when listening for multiple hours and never having a clue to what you're listening to! I understand where he's coming from but sometimes all improv can be self centered and out of balance... an occasional visit inside wouldn't hurt anything!

@@uubuuh Yeah I've been checking it out ! Love Wayne and hope he comes to my area ! I recognize that he's one of the best guitarist on the planet bar none... He's on another level like Holdsworth etc.. so I got major respect.. all I was saying is that he can get Waaaay over our heads at times and I get it but it's nothing wrong with communicating with your audience and kinda meeting us half way ! Not saying he should be confined to his previous material but after all, the songs I listed in the initial post is the reason why I love the guy's work !

It is interesting that Krantz covers up the James Tyler logo on the guitar. Was it that Krantz would not be endorsed by Tyler?

He just hates the design of the repeated lettering
@kennethgarcia25
@kennethgarcia25 3 жыл бұрын
@@nickkellie And, what, loves the big black tape over the design?!!! Apparently, he does not appear to have a more aesthetically appealing response. Perhaps if it said Wayne Krantz in big letters that would be better than James Tyler, but either is certainly more attractive than an ill fitting, unmatched wad of off-black tape at only one corner.
