The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Thank you for posting this moving video! For years, I had seen "Good Old Days" by Wayne Newton listed in episode guides and wondered what it was. I'd seen the part with "My Country 'Tis of Thee" on the Ed Sullivan "Red, White and Blue" DVD which my grandfather owns, but I'd never seen the entire segment before. Thank you for posting this! Wayne also sang "Somebody to Love" on this episode, which was posted last year.

Extremely rare to see Wayne lip sync as his voice was always ready for any challenge. But in this case I could understand as there was a lot of preparation & production in this well-crafted presentation. The transition at 3:15 was very powerful.

Religious and patriotic medleys were a common way to end stage acts. Elvis, for instance. So it was "a thing" while the country struggled with Vietnam, Civil Rights, assassinations and more. There were groups like "Up With People" presenting a positive message and seen on TV with some frequency. Productions like this tried to present something solid to hold on to in tumultuous times.
