Ken was probably pound 4 pound the best MMA fighter from 93 to 96. He had the best all around skills and combine that with his strength and decent quickness he was the best of that era.

Don Frye and Marco Ruas were the other 2 great all round/complete MMA guys from ROUGHLY the same era so it's hard to pick one, IMO.

Ken was just so dominant during this period in MMA history. He had Smith scared to throw a strike for fear of being taken down & even managed to get in a couple good licks of his own. Once on the ground it’s all Shamrock

So, apparently coming in as a kickboxer with no grounds skills and then not throwing any strikes is a bad strategy.

In the Pancraese league, open strikes standing are permitted while closed fists are only allowed on the ground.

@@TK42108 Not exactly correct. Regardless of standing or on the ground, no closed fists to the head.

I never understood why Maurice Smith got into Pancrase; a more grappling-based sport. He was more of a striking purest. Maybe he felt that his striking was good enough to carry himself to victories. Eventually, it brought him good fortune as he got to train and form a team with Kohsaka and Frank Shamrock and improve his ground game.
@hUCK-5 жыл бұрын
Looked absolutely terrible in striking here.
@voraminfantes52645 жыл бұрын
I'd contend that in many ways a striker was better off in Pancrase. You're not going to get your brain rattled with ground and pound, and you've got 4 rope grabs where you get a free stand up. Really those rope grabs are what made Pancrase great for strikers, because now your opponent needs to take you down 5 times to beat you instead of just once.
@davidgriffithsbjjcoach72075 жыл бұрын
I think you answered your own question. If I suck on the ground how do I improve unless I work on it?
@markking20545 жыл бұрын
Maurice Smith, was out of his zone in the foot wear section Pancras style. In his own stand up domain he is deadly. My opinion lots of respect for him.
@gnrvintagediecastracing7978 Жыл бұрын
He was willing to try something different and learn. My Guess is they paid well too. If he never did pancrase, he would never have been able to beat Coleman in the UFC. That friendship with TK, and Shamrock led to all 3 of them cross training and becoming top level fighters for that era.

UFC guys today wouldn't be able to handle these guys from past lol no gloves....no rounds.. whish it was like this now
@chiptabor98495 жыл бұрын
The sport is at a much higher level now . Shamrock at his best is a mid level fighter at today's standard.. and the gloves don't soften the blow it's to protect the hands from breaking and less cuts .. in this video in this fight they were not allowed to punch only slap..
@HaEnFinDag5 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? You really believe that slaps with no gloves are harder to take than real punches with close fists and mma gloves? Mma gloves are more about protecting the hands than the opponent.

They aren't slaps they are palm heel strikes and yes some of Bas Ruttens would be harder than a punch.

Shamrock: le vice â l'état pur!!! One of the best of all times:small ego but like to fight and hurt: definition of a real warrior!!
Maurice bear Coleman because Maurice had been paying his dues in Pancrase. The training with him, shamrock and tk followed a pattern to better each other and they all improved. No one, myself included back when Coleman was dominate expected Maurice to do squat , but that’s because we thought he was a one dimensional kick boxer. By the time he fights Coleman he had developed a decent takedown defence which few non wrestlers had at the time.

Ken Shamrock used to pro wrestle shoot-style in Japan under the name Wayne Shamrock (Wayne is his middle name). When his friends Minoru Suzuki and Masakatsu Funaki started Pancrase (Real shoot fighting, no works) they asked Ken to come along and fight under the name Wayne because of the popularity of it already.
