I lived in a marina for 15 yrs.and talked to many other boaters.It is a necessary habit to shift the controls and turn the steering wheel if steering is not hydraulic at least once a month year round.Cheers from Canada

Year round boating and fishing here on southern tip Vancouver Island. Myself and many other boaters fish year round.Fishing is getting tougher in the past few years though.The ocean water at the marina is about 50 deg.f in the winter and the bilge stays warm.

Thanks for your video. I believe I will have to check this out as well. Mine all works, but let's say there's lot of play, if I reverse, the handle needs to go quite a bit back to engage and throttle.

@WayneTheBoatGuy

The three area that can be a problem are the control box, the cable and at the engine. Try disconnecting the cable at the engine and see if it all works right - if so then it's engine related.

Great videos. Question for you....my motor ( 2012 Mercury 20hp 4 stroke with side controls) revs high when engaging forward or reverse. In neutral runs at idle speed. Goes into forward and reverse but engages hard to jolt forward but revs high in reverse.....so strange, any thoughts?

Hi Boat Guy, quick question, what's the difference between inboard vs outboard shifter, can I buy an outboard shifter for an inboard engine? Thanks for your help!
@WayneTheBoatGuy
@WayneTheBoatGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Apparently there are lots of little differences - like the ends of the cables, distance the cable travels, and how the electronics connect to the engine making it not easy to swap out one type for another.

I am not sure where (or if) I addressed the roller issue in the video. But as I was learning about the assembly and trying to identify potential problem areas, I noticed some of the rollers didn't move freely and I worked to free them up and re-lubricate those areas.

I enjoyed your video well done. I have the problem when moving the fast idle I get no response from the engine. I have to really push it to its maximum position with a lot of strength to get a little increase in engine revs. I'm going to have to follow your method. I'll see the engine mechanism first. Hopefully I won't strip a bolt😁
@WayneTheBoatGuy
@WayneTheBoatGuy 4 жыл бұрын
These things can be challenging. If you have a helper, you can have them work the shifter while you check what's happening (or not happening) on the engine. Good luck!!!

@@WayneTheBoatGuy Towards the end of the throttle cable one piece of metal tubing was crimped into another. The previous owner tilted the engine out of the water with a side twisting motion this put pressure on the crimped joint causing the metal to dislodge and the cable to get caught on the bracket for the other cable. So replacing a cable is what I need to do I may as well do both £57 here in the UK. I could bodge it back but I will order two new 8 ft cables and do it right plus a double holed witches hat rubber with grommet and ring another £7, better than the one hole version I have the two cables running through at the moment. Then I won't have to worry. When I tilt the outboard I will detach the cables from the engine.😉

No replacement pumps in the country. Would have to wait a month for Amazon to arrive. Found the parts and got it together and it runs like new !

I hope you'll be ok, but I cringe at the thought of the bolt you tightened with much force to reduce the play. Metal contracts and expands, under heat and cooling. Torgue setting for particular bolts exist for a reason. Aluminum is a soft metal and cracking a mount while on the water can be a real pain. Good luck and welcome to the boating world.
