Engine assembly lube is thick and tacky so it stays in place while engine sits before installed and to stay in place on first start up. I wouldn't think that would be to good for a cable and you would need that kind of air pressure to push your mix threw a cable plus the drag from that thick of oil can't be good on a out drive cable .cable lube is thin like water . I've used tranny fluid for years in many boats and never had to go back and do it again it's a one and done for years . It wicks threw the cable just by gravity feeding it and it's super easy.i use a fuel line and a top off a gear oil bottle . I just put cap on the tranny fluid bottle it's the same thread . Put a hose clamp on cable end count the turns it takes to take the end off the cable so you can put it back in same place and push hose on bottle end. Then gravity feed the out drive cable right in boat. It will take a few hrs or so but you will know when it's threw by the dripping out gimbal and out drive area . Cable from handle to switch plate you have to pull out and just do the same thing but you have to tie it up high to gravity feed it and my way you don't take the. Chance of that blowing apart on you in your face .

I've been trying to figure this out for a while for our old car transmission shift cable. I've seen the cable lube tools, but wasn't sure if they're the right size, and they cost some money for something I'm not likely to do very often. I really appreciate your knowledge and experience on how to do this more safely and inexpensively. I'll probably go with a dedicated cable lube to do this. Thank you very much for your help! I just subscribed with a bell ringer. You take care, ace! 👍👍👍

turn the pressure all the way down and slowly open it, 20-30 psi will do it safely

He does mention that it may be frayed or damaged inside but I don't know how you're supposed to determine that. Seems like whatever crap comes out of it used to be part of the cable. I might do this and keep it on board for a spare but if you get way out somewhere and it fails you might regret having done this. I don't know if it's from stress or that they're (boats ) just contrary by nature but cutting corners and pinching pennies has bitten me in the behind practically every time.

Depending on how stiff the cable is that may help out. Getting some kind of pressure behind it would be best though. Anything else to create pressure? Use one of your car tires, or go to a Wawa air pump? Or even a bicycle pump

I just gravity feed with a fuel line and I use a gear oil cap . I put cap on a transmission fluid bottle and hose clamp hose onto cable and slide hose on cap and gravity feed cables . Been doing it for years . Tranny fluid it's thin like cable lube and will take care of any rust on cable plus it's a great lubricant that's why it's used in a transmission Any oil besides cable lube oil is way to thick and will make drag plus you will need to pressurize it to get that thick fluid into a cable . Not the safest way of doing it .nothing like a face full of oil .

If you have one that isn't perfect, replace it. There's a reason, internally why it isn't smooth, replace it. This guy isn't right for the time you spend trying to do what he suggest you can replace the cable with new. The only difference is the cost of a new cable and LESS time spend doing the job. REPLACE THE CABLE....
@NoNonsenseKnowHow5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately with the way you worded your comment, you could not be more wrong. Lubricating your cables on boats and any vehicle is considered normal maintenance in my opinion. It should be done every year or two. And by the way, the cables I did in this video are still smooth as butter to this day.( sold that boat to a friend of mine) I suppose if you have unlimited amounts of money, yeah go ahead and replace your cables. But you don't need to remove them to lubricate them. If you watch the video, I specified that. I do agree, if there is any signs of fraying or damage on the table, replace it
