MAC
Highlight -Phloof
Midtone - Malt
Contour - Embark
Eyeliner - Blitz n Glitz and Carbon
Mascara X
It takes 3 colours to really define a eye. This is how i teach it. So if you were to come and see me personally, you could be getting the same advice, regardless of eye shape, colour, etc...
Highlight colour.
The highlight colour goes on the eye lid, inner corner and lower corner as well as just under the brow. Your choice of shade is up to you. But it must be the lightest of the three shades. You have a selection of choices. Shimmer. Matte. Metallic. Its up to you. Metallic will be more dramatic than a matte highlight. If you are choosing a shimmer or metallic shade, then apply it to you eyelid as mentioned and under your brow, not over the entire eye as this can look tacky! If you are choose a matte shade you can apply it all over your entire eyelid, from lid to brow bone. When picking matte shades try not going more than 3 shades lighter than your skin tone as this can look overly harsh and really wash out the eye.
*Note. Ebony beauties will find it most flattering to be a shimmer shade as opposed to a matte one as this will add beautiful dimension to the eye and ensure no shades turn ashy.
Midtone Shade.
This is the most important shade. This really really REALLY takes shape of you eye. This will open up the eye, and start the contouring part. Your midtone shade is in the same family as your skin tone but 1-3 shades darker. It is, without doubt the most boring of the three shades but the most important. Getting this step right will change your eye - you can really see this in my tutorial as i talk you through it step by step and you can see the depth and eye really take effect.
You apply your midtone shade to the crease of the eye. Starting from the inner corner of the eye by the nose, apply it in a windshield wiper motion back and forth. MAC 226 brush is best of this. Do not bring the midtone shade out beyond the edge of your eye. This can drag the eye down and look unflattering. You can also apply the midtone shade to your lower lash line from outside corner to inner, meeting your highlight shade. This step is optional but i do it because it creates a smooth flow of colours.
Contour Colour.
This is the darkest of the three shades. I'm not talking black, but its darker than the other two shades. You apply this colour from the outer eyelid and depending on your eye shape (spoken about more in eyeshadow 101 - mature eyes) up to half way across your eye. The brush you use is important here and again, depends on your eye shape. Close set eyes will want to use a small brush, hooded eyes or wide set eyes will want to use a larger brush. You will also apply the contour shade under your lower lash line about 2/3 - half away across the lower lash line. This will really make the eyes sand out.
Eyeliner:
You have a choice here. Pencil. Or powder. I prefer powder. Less hard. How you apply depends on your eye shape. Normally you would apply to your upper lash line but if you have hooded eyes you might have an issue as you don't have very much lid space showing and adding a dark colour here will look like you have a full eyelid of dark shadow so i would prefer to upper tight line the upper eyelid but colouring in the upper waterline with a eye pencil. But again, the choice is yours.
Mascara:
Waterproof tends to be the best option. But any that you like is fine. I like black on nearly everyone because it just makes the eyes stand out more, but brown is fine. I tend to stay away from Blue, Green, etc... because its not the most natural.

Wayne! Thank you so much! Once again you've taught me loads. While I'm only 42 and didn't think a video labled "Mature" eyes would fit for me, the tips on contouring were wonderful. Also, I don't care for a big think line of black eyeliner - so the liner tips were priceless. Thank you so much! I always learn something new on your channel. Much appreciated!

As a "mature woman" of 53 I really like this technique. You have some classy ideas. I love makeup but at my age too much can be disastrous. I use variety to feed my addiction but moderation to stay classy and look good. You do a great job. Thank you.

When I wanted to find it again today, I couldn't find it in my history so I watched about 10+ of your eyeshadow tutorials. Alas, I found it and I will never let it go again!!! Having just discovered you yesterday, I am amazed at your time on You Tube! I am so glad to have found you, as I think your demonstrations, your methods are easy to follow, and you are a great teacher! As I have aged, my application techniques also have to change, and I am so glad to have found someone brave enough to apply on yourself, while giving the explanations! I have been wearing makeup for 50 years, and there is always something new to learn, whether its about new products or new techniques. Thank you; I`m a new and happy subscriber, who will turn to your videos first for any questions I have. Thank you!

This. Is. BRILLIANT! Hands down the single-most useful make-up tutorial I have ever seen done by anyone. Straightforward, practical advice that I can walk straight over to my makeup mirror with and try tomorrow, which is exactly what we women need. I hate to think that over 30 qualifies as "mature" but really I think this is good advice for anyone. I really appreciate the practical nature of the advice that you've given here, and that you've shown the colours & brushes as well.

brilliant video. I'm rubbish with makeup and just now dealing with ageing skin and how to adjust. Especially smokey eyes, I was ending up looking haggard. Luckily I have similar colouring, so last minute before a date I went to MAC, bought the 3 eyeshadows mentioned without even trying them, came home and did this. Oh. My. God. Thank you. For the 1st time in my life, I looked grown up and mature instead of mutton/lamb syndrome. It's all perfect, and I learned so much. It makes such a difference instead of watching someone do it on a model. Every bit of info you give has completely changed what I do, from concealer to eyeliner to contouring (never done it!). Brilliant. Too bad you're not a stylist. If you could do this with my wardrobe, I'd be sorted. xxx

This is such a lovely post! I stopped subbing to other MUA gurus because they all targeted young, dramatic, sometimes theatrical looks. That info just does not transfer with age. Wayne has been the ONLY one to address makeup for the mature face, and he does it with dignity and class. So professional. I now exclusively follow his advice for skin care & makeup, and it's made my life so different! At 50 can't wear it how we did at 20, and he showed me why and how. NOW I get it. He's my superstar!

+Debbie Sparrow I hear ya!! I can do a little and this seems to be so much less than other tutorials I've seen. I can't do anything black around my eyes. It sucks the color out and causes my eyes to be very old looking. Even way back in my 20's. I can't wear black clothing, never could, not a solid black. The darker color around the eye in the lash line would really help my eyelashes.

+Granny LaLa I could never wear black eyeliner or mascara, not even in my 20s. Now that I am in my 60s, I hardly ever wear makeup but when I do I wear brown. It is hard to find brown eyeliner and mascara but keep looking because it does exist. Ditto brown eyebrow pencil. The brown provides some definition without the harshness.

What I especially like about Mr. Goss' way is that you can tailor this to whether you want a subtle look or one that is more stand-out. I generally opt for the stand-out look because I wear glasses and my eyes can get lost behind them. An excellent video - and I recommend that anyone try this. You may do what I did and toss out your eyeliners!!

I love all your tutorials and the details and the way you don't push expensive make up just colours and good brushes to help with the technique.. when or not to use glittery , but mainly matt as I'm 47 and hardly leave the house but you have made me want to look good for me. Thank you merry Christmas and God bless you to take the time to make a difference to my life 😀👍

thanks Wayne, you step by step, explanations of why and why not, are just what this 50yr old beginner needs,. my makeup routine was tinted moustouriser, bronzer, mascara and lippy. so armed with liquid and mineral powder, setting powders and bases etc i divided my face in half and used one on each side. now I'm off to your mature smokey eye tutorial to see how that looks on the left. thanks again

You are a miracle-worker! I have been looking all over for a tutorial like this one being 54, loving make-up and trying to adjust the heavy eye-liner-glittery looks to my now maturing skin. You are right on message with everything you say and you have created a gorgeous look that works very well for me. THANK YOU. It is so difficult to find palettes with matte eyeshadow. Would you consider suggesting some? Shine on!

Lining the water line of the upper lid is one of the most useful tips I've learned from you for my hooded eyes. It looks good even if I don't use eyeshadow.

Oh my gosh! I have watched so many of your videos and loved them all but this was the best one for me yet. The eyeliner on the "waterline" of the upper lid made a TREMENDOUS difference for me. Thank you so very much!!

Hola Wayne: both the under-the-upper lid and wiggle in on the top of the base of the lashes are the best demonstrated versions I've seen. Gracias, CL

Fantastic. I need to watch this multiple times while I'm trying it on my own eyes! I've never been sure what to do in the corners, and at the edges of my eyes. You explain it so clearly. Thank you.

I've been doing my make up in a similar fashion forever, but discovering techniques through and trial error actually. I have been lining my waterline on top as I hate thick liner, since 1965, I, before discovering I could do it in that way,I used max factor cake eyeliner (discontinued in the 70s) on the top and removed the thicker line with a cotton bud or several, to create the dark lash effect. I am so glad that a young man is now extolling the virtues of subtle being better. I am 62. X

Your'e fantastic Wayne!! straight to the point and very helpful. Im only 19 and have always had hooded eyes...i use this technique everyday despite never having learnt it, when you get used to makeup, the techniques you use just come with experience of what looks good and it really works for me!

I love to come back to this video, because I've been doing my eye make up this way for years, even when others were putting eye shadow right up into the brow(not a subtle highlight but bright blue). I didn't have a hooded eye then so I put liner on the lash line but not waterline, I would put linner on the bottom as well. I had taste and didn't know it ha.

Awesome! You saved my face. I was putting the concealer all over under my eyes which covered the dark circles but I could see the bags still! I wish I had you to do my makeup every day! You are the best!

This is really awesome! I've watched about 10 videos with different ideas. But, none of them suggested a "midtone" color, and I could really see how it POPPED those eyes out. Also, I've tried different eyeliner methods, but never thought of using a DARKER shade just along the lashes! The "waterline" method seems to close my eyes, so I don't usually use it. Thanks for all the great suggestions. Now I gotta go try it!

I know nothing about make-up. But find my self in a job now that almost requires me to wear it. I am learning and I really like how you did this, from applying it to your self to show how it is done to the tip on using a dark shadow to press into the base of the lashes.. very cool. This older lady approves!
