I still have Rumble Arena 2. There are TONS of improvements made over the original, and I'm able to have fun with it in its own stupid way. They did remove the humans but digivolving isn't a pace breaker. The sequel truly does fix a lot of the issues with the original.
@lenewtype

@@GT-Rev It's been like 14 years since I played it, but iirc you could also digivolve multiple times in 2?
@GT-Rev
@GT-Rev Жыл бұрын
@@lenewtype that is correct! Each stage 3 digimon (child level) gets to digivolve twice! Once to stage 4 (champion/adult), and then again to either 5 or 6, whatever their last stage in the anime is. And if you lose a life, you return to the previous stage.
@Actar_Raikit
@Actar_Raikit Жыл бұрын
@@GT-Rev On the contrary. I used to play the sequel quite a bit but never liked it as much as the original. Having to collect those eggs to evolve really ruined the pacing and fun of the battles for me. Like, my friends and I would be really involved in fighting, and then one or both of us would just stop to go around the stage collecting eggs. Losing a life and dropping an evolution stage was also supremely frustrating, especially after running all over the stage and trying to collect those darn eggs. Instead of jumping into the fighting, those of us who were near losing a life would just try to camp somewhere safe or run away. Urgh. The gameplay did not encourage fast and furious fighting like the original did.

Here I was like; "Yeah it's a shame there's no Angewomon, she's definitely iconic but being you'd be going from a Champion into an Ultimate does not seem like a worthy power spike compared to the rest of the cast going from Rookie into Mega, so I feel it makes sense." Then I saw Stingmon...

Absolutely loved this game as a kid, but my definite favorite part is Guilmon's triangle attack/special melee move. "Rock Breaker." It sounds like he says "Butt Licker" and that alone made me spam the move religiously. Makes it all the better now with the Steve Blum/Spike Spiegel meme association

There's just something about Digimon. There's no other franchise for me where the jank is truly part of the charm. I see what you're saying about it being incredibly unbalanced and the extra mechanics don't really feel like they fit in a smash clone. But stuff like that is what keeps me coming back to Digimon. The stakes have always been low enough that they just try stuff! Sure, they don't get it right very often, but they always spark my imagination. What would a brawler with all these extra mechanics look like if it was fully smoothed out? Could be incredible. I love that I can always count on it to throw me a curve ball 😂

"Simple as Smash's controls are, they do offer a certain level of variety, where pressing down while using your attack buttons or even being airborne while doing so will change the resulting attack. Not so much the case here. The basics of the combat pretty much boil down to spamming the Square button and on occasion you can spice things up with a special attack. Somebody out there right now really wants to tell me all about just how in depth this combat actually is, but if they have to explain that depth to me because the game itself didn't put it on display... I think that's saying something." Yet, that's exactly how the Square button attacks work. Press square, get a 3 hit jab combo. Hold up and press square, get a launcher. Jump forward and press square, you get a forward air. You know, like Smash? I won't disagree that the game could perhaps do with some tutorials (but I'd tangentially argue that Street Fighter 2 was wildly successful without any despite having more complex controls), and this not holding true for the special buttons is a fair criticism, but even still you're being reductive about the game's mechanics and overly dismissive about the game's depth. Sure, the game isn't *that* deep or nothing, but there is still stuff of value here (have you ever seen any other game with the controls and stages of a platform fighter and the life bars and hitstun mechanics of a 2D fighter? I'd love to know if you have, 'cause I haven't), especially when playing against other people rather than just the computers. It seems to me your problem with the game stems more from the lack luster AI opponents than the game's mechanics, finding no reason to explore them or their depth any further than the bare minimum needed to finish arcade mode (which is honestly fair, I often do the same to turn based RPG games, but blaming the game mechanics instead of the AI or your own gameplay habits isn't). It honestly feels like you reviewed this game out of a perceived obligation as a Digimon fan more than anything else.

I have such strong memories of this game. I played all the time with my cousins during the summer. We used to get all of the extensions cords and found a TV outside on the street and rolled it to my grandparents backyard so we could all play this game. We made a house rule that everyone had to choose one digimon and no one could use your digmon to fight (unless asked or if you lost it in a fight). 6 cousins, battling day in and day out for a month or so was so much fun! I miss those guys.

You are going to be embarrassed because this is actually the God tier of fighting gameplay. What you need to do is feel the Digimon as it attacks and then react with the respective square and triangle buttons. The combo system was actually going to be used in the new Street Fighter games but Capcom got jealous and apparently stopped it. The element weaknesses may sound stupid and pointless when you can just wait till everyone picks their character then pick the one with the most boosts in strength. This was going to be used in Smash Bros but again, there was a fight because they won't put Angewoman as a Smash bros character. The movement may feel choppy and slow but that's because it helps you feel the impact and power of the Digimon. If you meditate and then open you mind, then play, you will feel an enlightenment that most people just don't understand. The Digievolution, although seems janky and breaks up the tension, actually is designed so you can take a swig of a drink, a drag of a cigarette, whatever (you earnt it). It was designed to actually reduce the amount of time children were on games for. In the Brazilian release, it encourages kids to do push ups while it loads but must of not come through PAL. As a result, this game was deliberately given bad ratings and it was a big conspiracy (like E.T).

Of all the people I played Rumble Arena with as a kid, it was with my grandparents funnily enough. They had this huge container filled with games for PS1, NES, SNES, etc, and Rumble arena was included in their collection (No idea why. Not even they remember how they got it). But yeah, some weekend visits included all of us duking it out with random Digimon in Rumble Arena. My insistence of always picking Terriermon got me crushed often (Thanks for the PTSD flashback while destroying Megagargomon at 9:45 . My grandpa destroyed me so much that way 🤣🤣🤣). My grandparents had no idea what Digimon was or what the anime was about, they were just excited to have a good time gaming with me. Rumble arena will always have that special place in my heart because of my grandparents. Guess it does for them as well because whenever the current Digimon TCG drops a Megagargomon they'll always ask me how to get it ASAP. They just have this collection of Megagargomon cards or something from they Terriermon lineup. It's fantastic and I love it 🤣🤣

Loved this as a kid. Me and my brother/friends would play everytime. The VERY simple control scheme meant we would have to learn how to fool each other, and fake attacks, fake defenses, and learn wich moves were faster or not. Playing as War Greymon or Black War Greymon would always feel cool, using tornados to the wrong size in purpose, until the one we meant to connect would do it and combo with other melee attacks, a circle and ulti. It was almost one whot combo when it would work, Felt amazing and PRO XDDD

Yeah it's pretty much objectively not that good nowadays, the controls are really janky and it's extremely unbalanced, the voice acting is weird, the maps are also kinda awful gameplay-wise (even though they look great for a ps1 title)... but I think It's still enjoyable for what it is. It's got that good old ps1 era charm to it that keeps me going back to it. It definetly deserves a remake even though we all know it's not going to happen, sadly.

While I understand that for the vast majority of people "Oh you have to explain the depth to me? That's simply bad design then" is true for them, I think it's actually indicative of emergent gameplay, which is the sign of a really great game and system for more committed players. Games that just say "Here's how you play, now do this until you reach the end" typically don't have much to delve into. You just play for a bit, and then you're done. Works for most people, but for people who prefer to get really involved in one game rather than playing a whole bunch of games, "What [having depth that has to/can be explained] speaks for itself" means is that it's actually probably pretty interesting.

I used to play the sequel quite a bit but never liked it as much as the original. Having to collect those eggs to evolve really ruined the pacing and fun of the battles for me.

I'm not huge on Digimon, just have some childhood nostalgia for it (which is why I watched this and your previous upload), but I really wanted to comment that your delivery is excellent! It's not often I come across a smaller youtuber who sounds so clean per se. It's really pleasant to listen to your videos thanks to how you enunciate different phrases so judiciously and how neatly you've edited voice line cuts. This also makes it more enticing to follow through with the whole video. Good work! I hope you get what I mean, I don't know how else to explain this.

Digimon Rumble Arena is one of my favorite fighting games (the others being SF2:Special champion edition, Soul Calibur 2, and Evil Zone). With a fantastic roster, cool stage mechanics, and killer moves, playing DRA was a blast.

The thing about these games that are too simple to be enjoyed for us, is that you can actually have fun with people that don't know what they're doing. There's not enough strategy for the match to be unbalanced, specially if you let the newbie pick an evolved form and you pick a rookie

I'm gonna be honest, this game is so much better multiplayer with friends, and also being a kid helps too.

8:50 Lots of people presume Gatomon is a rookie when she's actually a champion. You don't get Angewomon because she's an ultimate, not a mega.That's why when you get the mega evolution you get Magnadramon.

You can actually change up your basic attack based on the direction you push the controller. You can have low sweeping ones or high reaching ones. They will break through guards if not guarded for right. Not that it has the diversity of the Smash attacks, but it is a thing

@@Wayneisboss I never played DRA2, but I was an avid boy of DRA so my dad, bros, and I would play it nonstop. I will say though the rest of your video was on point. For clarification, you can have an up attack, a down attack and a "forward"/standard attack (same is true in the air the forward attack is the same, you just change facing directions). The forward attack is the one that's most shown with the chain mashing. There is a "smash" attack though which is a 100% guard breaker which is pressing forward at the same time as pushing the basic attack button

I mainly and mostly played this game as a kid, I loved it so much because I already loved digimon. I liked playing as Renamon because her special attack and ability are insanely overpowered in her basic form, at some point I played a whole run without evolving, that's how broken she is. I accidentally found this channel, and damn I love finding other people who really love digimon too.
