In 1845 a french doctor tried to ban theater plays, non-approved literature, and imagination. Yeah he tried to ban a bodily function. Why? He said it increases suicide rate. Somhow DW1 being the oldest game, actually have way more QoL and less time consuming than 2 and 3. Imagine 3 asking u to walk between cities + having random encounter while DW1 can let u walk past battles and have few fast travel options like autopilot and birdrmon. Keep replaying DW1 every few years or so. Playing normally can finish the game around 10 hours or so. Game really ahead of its time.

Growing up as a kid this was my siblings and my collective favorite game, but we were much more forgiving of the grindiness and dead ends as kids because it was discovery. Our real challenge came from the youngest of us leaving the disk out, resulting in it getting scratched and often just...not loading. Sometimes we'd put the disk in and walk away, and come back if we heard the theme, or check in a few hours later to see if we missed it. In hindsight, I can definitely see that it's not a game to play when you're an adult with a job or even just access to the internet, but back in the 90s, if you're a kid in a small town and you can't be on the dial-up internet because your parents are waiting on a phone call...it's great way to spend your time, and I will always love it for that.

A fantastic video. I grew up with the game but never beat it myself, and that's with owning a gameshark. I think the digibeetle and its heavy customization is an interesting concept. If the act of using it and understanding its functions weren't so bad, it could be really fun and different from other games. I think a remake of this game with tighter pacing, actual running, smoothed out load times, and less oppressive grinding requirements could be very fun. I think of Monster Rancher 4 on the PS2 sometimes with this game. You spent the week training your monsters, feeding them, bonding with them, etc. Then, on the weekend, you would choose to go to the city, go to a tournament to have one of your monsters compete, or go dungeon diving with a select group of your monsters. I think something like this mixed with Digimon World 2 would have made a world of difference. Kudos on surviving this game and going further than I ever could. I can't wait for the Digimon World 3 review, though I know I'll have to. And I look forward to when you catch up to Digimon Survive. It's my favorite of the franchise.

Happy to see someone advertising the game. Love it myself despite it's flaws but will retort a few things and add to a few others: (Kudos to those that read it all haha) 01. Missing the Daycare-mons is a huge derp-moment on your part haha; All the mons from Numemon for Megadramon trade onwards are incredible assets. 02. The LAG was REAL. As I've gotten older I DO appreciate how far they pushed the game specs, including as much as they could BUT still doesn't make it easier to play haha 03. The 'not moving' damage from mines only becomes an issue when there's other mons on the map to approach and battle you 04. Wish item loadouts were a thing back then when sorting out inventory T_T 05. Autopilot can sadly be damaged haha 06. Digivolving was horrible at first cause nothing in the game TELLS YOU they can become Champion at Lvl 11 and so you miss out on their skills cause they can't level up =( 07. First real disagreement - Attacks missing a defeated opponent makes sense as that's the orders that went out. Got to imagine they're fighting like in the opening; can't sudden retrace your steps and go somewhere else on the battle field. Makes judging your own mons and the enemy mons more involved in planning attacks. 08. The game does spend a lot of effort immersing you into the world and I honestly loved that fact BUT I fully agree being stopped for my I.D Badge for the 500th time was painful 09. 'FAST' levelling was HORRIBLE T_T Really wish they could just of had them level up multiple times. It's not like they'd have missed out on skills at that point!! 10. Comparing Dragon Warrior's battles isn't a fair comparison. Shin Megami Tensei, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy and other JRPGs is fairer. Refer to point 02 too 11. THAT LEVEL WAS A DICK MOVE @DEVELOPERS (Soft Domain F16 with the Red Acid) 12. Some Ultimate mons NOT having Megas did suck big time 13. The 99 Floor area was the only place to find and catch a Kimeramon for self reward sake haha (can also encounter Omnimon and Diablomon) 14. YOU NEVER GOT THE METALGREYMON?! DUDE!!! Between this and point 01, NO WONDER you had a harder time lmao (How though? It literally gives you a Toy Plane to get him?! lmao) As a whole, despite it's flaws I will hail this games as a GOLD standard as the world building was great (serving future games), had a huge amount of content even taking out the tedious grinding and was a game made back in 2001. Most games TODAY don't put in this level of effort or work. If this type of game was redone with quality of live mechanics (item loadouts, easier evolution system, a console that could actually process it all xD, etc) then that game would be a contender of game of the year, no matter what else came out.....in my opinion haha Fun watch Wayne.

The wait was worth it! DW2 is a proper mindfck and seeing you on the downward spiral all of us were trying to make sense of this game is just amazing. This little gem deserves the spotlight for being such an addicting, sadistic playthrough, but definitely worth it to get our favourites completely and utterly massive at the end of the game for massive benefits AND able to beat the endgame content/secret stuff. DW2 isn't for everyone and this video shows exactly why, and even though I still think the game almost actively tries to drive people away with its difficulty curve, I just love it more than any other Digimon World game. I don't know why they made these Digimon games so complex in comparison to... well, Pokémon but still, I'm glad it exists. Good stuff, Wayne!

I endlessly played this game as a kid, I still love it to this day. I sure I would have problems with the game if I were to play it today. But man the nostalgia is so strong with this one, costumizing the beetle or catching and evolving different digimon all that plus me barely understanding english as a kid. I don't kno1w I just have so much fond memories with my cousin playing thos on weekends until late at night trying to figure out how to capture certain digimon or what's the best two types to mix and so on I remember keeping a list of what digimons to mix to get what and I would share it with my friends in school the next day it was like a cheat sheet. My excitement was through the roof when I got a veemon since he was my favorite. I feel like the difficulty and hard to understand mechanics of old games is part of the charm of these games, many games felt like a puzzle that you needed to solve, and once you solve it you can start enjoying the actual game. It reminds me of that tomb raider game it had the worst most atrocious controls yet people loved it because if you figure the controls out you can do some crazyu jumps while shooting twin pistols and killing dinosaurs, it made you feel like a badass but the controls would still give you an aneurysm.

So fun fact: I got stuck playing this game as a kid. Not because of the grind, oh no. Because I somehow managed to skip a ton of story cutscenes and didn't know what to do. So in the dungeon where you rescue Angemon, I ran out of movement and got booted out of the dungeon one tile from the exit. My progress was updated, multiple areas were unlocked, enough that I couldn't tell where the new ended and the old began, but none of the cutscenes played, so I had no idea what was going on anymore. I know it kept that I saved Angemon because I could talk to him in one of the areas, but no matter what I did I couldn't figure out my current objective, causing that save file to be, as far as my kid self could tell, completely bricked. It doesn't help that there were multiple dungeons that seemed to be unlocked too, so I had too many possible directions I could go, and no clue which was the correct one.

Man that japanese artwork for DW1 looks insanely cool! Nice job on being able to add that to your collection, if the NA version is anything to go by it was probably hard to find or expensive at the very least. (NA version is 110$ on Amazon) Also MAD respect for wanting to make your review/retrospective as authentic as possible by playing the original disc version in your PS3. Dude, that takes guts because this game broke me as a teenage kid. Yeesh, still kudos man we the audience appreciate you so much! Seriously authenticity is the #1 commodity on YT right now so i'm glad to see you peddling in it. :)

Loved digimon world 1 as a kid and currently playing the third one for the first time and enjoying it immensely. Never touched this title and don’t think I ever will especially after seeing your mental breakdown lol. The third one seems to me like they learned what went horribly wrong in the first two games and improved on those parts a lot. While not a perfect game I still think you’ll have actually a good time instead of what happened with this one :D You’ve put so much effort and hard work into these videos while having a job on the side too that’s incredible. Looking forward to seeing more of your thoughts on retro games!

The sad part is that the game is actually fun if you're not going into it with the intention of finishing the game. Around the section where you can access the other two Digimon types the game really opens up. I have multiple save files where I just kept training and catching more Digimon and never even continued with the story

Great video man. That kind of grinding really built my perseverance at a young age, beating Gaia on the original PS1, man. You HAD to do the work. Also maybe already someone pointed it out, but did u know that, when on confusion state, your digimon can still perform an interrupt attack at your command? That's why i always kept an interrupt skill at hand for EVERY digimon. BTW get ready for 3 if you hate grinding!

At this point I'd settle for re-releases. PlayStation has a bunch of psone classics on their service with rewind features, save states, and trophies. If they added a speed boost it would make Digimon world 2 SO much more playable. Digimon as a whole doesn't really seem like they do any kind of remakes, they're more all about making sequels and spiritual successors. You want them to remake THIS game? Go play Digimon World on the DS or better yet the Cyber Sleuth games.

Some other tidbits that i don't remember being covered. Counter attacks have a -1 priority in move order, in other words they will always go last, unless they are attacked in which case they'll hit immediately after. Interrupt attacks can be used to circumvent counter attacks. Waiting for a countering digimon to attack and interrupting them and not activating their counter. But if their counter is activated, it cannot be interrupted. Interrupts can also be used to circumvent confusion as well, a confused digimon will never attack itself or an ally while using an interrupt. But the trade off is that as long as you're using one, your digimon will never snap out of confusion. 3rd in regard to interrupts, they can be used to preview which of your digimon will get attacked, if you choose to interrupt an enemy attack, if you've paid attention to your digimons hp, you'll see it's lower, that means it's the target of an attack. So you can strategically choose which attack to interrupt. It might preview status effects, but i might be misremembering that.

This is an emulator friendly game. It is NOT fun without the ability to just use save states and speed up. And honestly, today you have both Cyber Sleuth games, that handle all of this much better. But the game has charm, if you are willing to emulate it. I am probably going to play it again, with an emulator, since I would not play this game without it. Digimon World 3 also has a similar experience, though it is way more tolerable without an emulator than 2. Great video ❤👍

Awesome video! One interesting thing to note is that the slowdown that occurs when selecting your moves mid battle happens specifically when playing the game on a ps3. I've never figured out why it does this, but it keeps me from going back to the game on a ps3 for that reason. So not only did you beat thr game, you beat it with your battles taking a small chunk longer than usual. Not that the game is much shorter without that one instance of slowdowns.

The digimon center is actually super useful. But very easy to forget for sure. And a little history lesson, a LOT of turn based video games historically have that functionality of "Missing when their original target dies" I know this, because after playing many turn based RPGs my childhood I'm now so traumatized I almost always try to exactly kill my enemies and not overkill with someone else, often to my detriment.

Love the dedication you put on this video. This game was really important in my childhood. I almost beat it as a kid, but my memory card broke after I defeated the Dark Masters and I lost all my progress. Seeing this I realize I was SO CLOSE to beat it!!!! It will remain as one of my incompleted life goals as a gamer. I am now 33 years old and I think I will never finish this, I do not have the mindset anymore for this kind of game and that depress me a little, but well that is part of growing up I think. Thank you for showing me how little I understood the mechanics of the game! My English at the time was not the best... and I played the game with a dictionary Spanish-english at my side. Curiously the English I learned in this game started my journey to learn English and now I am a lawyer who works doing contracts both in Spanish and English when My coworkers ask me where I learned English I tell them from "Digimon world 2": Again love your edition and video, keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for playing this game. I happened upon it at my cousin's house, and loved what I saw of it. I played it years later as an adult and came across the same mess that you did. I really loved the DNA digivolve mechanic, thought it was cool as hell, but the actual amount of time that you spend interfacing with the actual fun mechanic of the game was FAR too short. If any of the digimon world games need to be remade, it's this one.

This is the most complete video about Digimon World 2 that i've ever seen, congratulations my dude. Digimon World 2 has a special place in my heart because it was the very first digimon game I played in my life. I reallly like the freedom it gives to us when it comes to building your team and choosing your digimons. I remember when my brother digivolved a Betamon and it turned into a Dark Tyrannomon and that was the first time I saw that digimon in my life and since I used to love dinosaurs when I was a kid (90s kid lol) I got completely mind blown and, to this day, Dark Tyrannomon is still my favorite digimon. I played it again on my PSX when I was a teenager, got pretty far but didn't finish (actually I never finished it). I'm waiting for a Steam/Xbox release of a Digimon HD remaster collection to play this one again :D

Fantastic video. Really cannot imagine how much effort this took. I played this game as a child multiple times and never really made it far. Then again in middle school on an emulator and made it about 50 hours through. Out of all the games I’ve played, this probably sits at the top as the most daunting. The game is just huge and so incredibly tedious. Appreciate the effort but glad it was you and not me having to make this lol. This game is its own kind of boss battle.

My father addicted with this game. I remember he spent almost 3 years (from 2002-2004) to finally finish this game. English is not our native language and iirc theres no tutorial to catch new digimon. So my father using only ninjamon and defeat the kuwagamon gesomon syakomon trio after hundred tries (it consume weekly iirc) He always think the next level of 99999999999999 in level 13 can be reached. Until one day he frustrated because the progress stuck. So i try his progress until I realized we can press square and throw the toys (Im still 8 years and english is not our native language, I play with dictionary in hand). When he come home from work, I excitedly said "Dad, you never know we can do this, we can catch other digimon and fight with 3 of them and then we can dna digivolve so they can leveling more than 13!" His face is so bright then and our progress continues until we beat gaia the last boss, defeat last colosseum opponent jijimon, magnadramon and sherapimon. What an experience we have 😁😁😁

It took it's time but it's here, and that's the most important thing. Gratz on working through this absolutely brutal run of a game, and gratz on getting this out, I know it's been a pressure for a long while and I'm sure now that it's done there's more learned than not. I think one big takeaway anyone can appreciate from a game like this is what NOT to do in your dungeon crawler/rpg/mystery dungeon game. We learn from the bad more than we learn from the good sometimes. Looking forward to Metroid Month, whatever it may be, and enjoy your rest.

One of my favorite games of all time when I was a kid, thank you for this great video, I want to add three interesting things that some people might not know about in this game: 1. Digimon types (Vaccine, Data, Virus) matter in fights like rock, paper and scissors, Vaccine is stronger against Virus, Virus is stronger against Data and Data is stronger against Vaccine so Vaccine>Virus>Data>Vaccine (the last boss is actually Data so Virus digimons will deal more damage to it and take less dmg from it's attacks) 2. Digimon types effect your DNA-Digivolve results (with an exception which is Vademon): (Vaccine + Vaccine) or (Vaccine + Virus) DNA will result into a Vaccine Digimon (Data + Data) or (Data + Vaccine) DNA will result into a Data Digimon (Virus + Virus) or (Virus + Data) DNA will result into a Virus Digimon the exception to this which is Vademon which could result from a Vaccine + Virus DNA having a Virus Digimon result which is Vademon 3. you will have a different guardian encounter depending on which tamer club you choose so there is 3 different guardians (lots of people probably know this fact already) again very well done video can't wait to watch your video on Digimon world 3.

If you think you'll be revisiting this game on an emulator as you said towards the end, might I recommend Digimon World 2 Alternative? A rom hack that doesn't change too much of the base game in terms of the dungeon crawling etc but overhauls the systems within: Like how every digimon can go from rookie to mega, no Triceramon shenanigans. A lot of the digivolution routes change , and the documentation for that is pretty good, it even includes a matrix for DNA digivolutions so you can plan out the route you want to take to get your favorites (Also Omnimon is only on average 10 DP instead of 20, which is actually doable). The variety of encounters is also way better, and the game is overall more challenging, which now that you've found out some of the tips and tricks to the game, you may crave the challenge. The increased challenge also paradoxically reduces the grinding required, since the wild digimon are higher levels, you can increase your "Digimon A's" level cap really easily when you have a Digimon you like. Give it a shot!

As someone with a lot of experience in this game, some tips for newbies. The later ones are critical: 1. You can move diagonally to save on fuel, but more importantly the wild Digimon CAN'T use this same trick. If you really need to avoid a fight for whatever reason, this is your best option. 2. The placement of Digimon in the DNA process doesn't matter at all. The level cap is always high + (low/5) and the DP increase is always the highest plus 1. So, you can't go 5 + 7 to get 13, it will just become 8. 3. Thanks to the round down, this makes grinding way easier. If you know a Digimon won't reach a multiple of 5, then you don't need to worry about maxing out to optimize the level cap. Ex/ if DigimonA maxes out at 17 and you plan on combining it with your level 20 DigimonB, you can just get DigimonA up to level 15 and the level result will stay the same, 23. 4. If you want a Veemon of any kind, just combine Greymon with basically anything ending in -dramon. If you want the armor evolutions, go down to a Veemon with a DP of 8 or higher to get Flamedramon, Raidramon, and Imperialdramon. 5. Get the Digimon Center trades. The Digimon you get will always have unique moves that don't come with it naturally in the wild. A good example is the MagnaAngemon whose main move heals everyone in your party for 150 HP. 6. Get a Phoenixmon if you can. It's unique move acts like the Max Revive from Pokemon, which in combination with the MagnaAngemon's move and guarding can make most healing items redundant. 7. Wanna make grinding easier? If you gain enough EXP in battle to level up twice, you will only level up once. However, your stat screen will show that you need 0 EXP for the next level since it all rolls over. If you then go into a new battle and win, you will immediately level up... and the new EXP will also roll over, causing another level up in the next battle. In later domains, you can bring Rookies into the battles and get them to level 11 and beyond without difficulty. Just make sure to pull them off the Digi-Line before they hit 12 to save time on learning moves. And once they Digivolve, the EXP still carries over. I've started with fresh Rookies and gotten them to level 18 before ever needing multiple battles to level up. 8. Arguably the most important tip I have: level ups restore HP and MP completely. If a Digimon is close to death and will level up after the battle ends, focus on keeping it alive but don't bother getting it back to full strength. Paired with tip 7, this can make grinding even easier if your low level guys just block all the time. Even if they take damage, they're guaranteed a level up at the end as long as they don't hit 0. I know he technically covers the last two tips, but I've put a positive spin on them. Given the game's playstyle, this strategy is risky but arguably the faster option. The one level at a time part it meant to prevent missing the moves. In order to learn Champion moves, your Digimon needs to gain a level as a Champion. If you reach the cap before you Digivolve, you miss out on those moves and the same logic applies to Ultimate and Mega. This is why you should always go back the moment a Digimon hits level 11, 21, or 31; if it's going to learn something, you won't risk possibly missing out. Obviously, this wouldn't be an issue if the game was designed differently... but it isn't, so this is sadly the way to go.

Got here from recommendations. This video earned a subscription from me. I played this game so much as a kid but got stuck because I couldn't figure out how the max level system worked. I thought it was based only off DP and that led to me merging my Digimon as soon as possible to try and get DP instead of worrying about the max level like I should have been. Good to know wish the game had explained that

You played it on native hardware.... Well, as a long time fan of this game. That earned you the watch, like, and sub alone. You are a brave man. I'll be honest. When you brought up the lag, I felt all of your pain. It's a bit absurd. As if the game is actively deciding how to proceed next. Do I die? This is the question I believe the game asks itself every time it takes it a minute to open your menu. I love this game and all of its grindy jank. It's like your playing the game within a game to not let it break you. I can't fully explain why, but I have multiple completions of this game over my years. It's the absolutely hilarious things the Digimon yell out when attacking. That alone NEVER has gotten old. It's the player character yelling out SHOOTAH GUN! I still say that in my day to day life. I love deciphering what is or is not broken as hell. How quickly you can make your own Digimon broken as hell. Well.... Quickly might be a strong word for this game, but you catch my drift. There is a very fun game hidden in the slow grind. I'll always go back and play it every few years. On an emulator. I'm not a psychopath hellbent on chipping away at my mental health.

The Digimon Center is 100% worth it. It might seem like a hassle to keep checking it, but at some point you can casually trade Numemon for Megadramon. This is at a point in the game where your only other Ultimate is MetalGreymon, if you even know to catch him. It's STUPIDLY helpful since it basically lets you springboard one or maybe even two of your party slots right up to Ultimate tier level range super early on. Sure, they're going to have a more limited moveset, but that's a low cost for the raw power they have. The trade after that is also super good. MagnaAngemon. Meaning if you started as a Black Sword tamer, for example, then you get access to a pretty strong healer for a pretty low cost. And since the game is so grindy anyways, there's not much to lose by looking up where to find a thing and going on a capture mission while leveling your freshly fused Digimon.

I never expected to see someone do a deep dive on this game. I never finished it as a kid for reasons I'm sure you understand but I was always intrigued by the story and frustrated by little info on it I can find online. Everyone seems to remember Neo Crimson as the precursor to Tamers' bio merge but that and the Chaos generals are all that anyone seems to remember. I had both the official guide for the game and a gameshark to cheat my way through anything and an obsessive, ridiculously stubborn child's love of Digimon empowering me and this game still crushed my soul. I never expected to see anyone take more than a cursory look at it and why it's unbearable to play, so as possibly the only person alive who actually wanted a thorough deep dive into this slog of a game, you have my deepest respect for the time and surely sanity this video cost you.
