Good points! As a producer I notice that using good headphones let’s me know exactly what the stereo image is like as while as how bright or dark a sound is. It’s interesting that you say speakers give a more accurate sound. In my situation I find that headphones do. I’m not sure how different my set of cabinet speakers are from studio monitors because I haven’t got studio monitors yet, but whenever I make something on the big speakers and listen later on headphones, the sounds reveal themselves as sounding much thinner, quieter, and darker than when I was listening back on speakers. imo speakers are great when generating concepts and I can get really excited about the music because I can feel it more, but headphones are great for sculpting the sounds. But who knows, my perspective may change when I get some good monitors!
@SparkyTheInvincible3 жыл бұрын
I think expensive headphones are the way to go for a lot if not most producers. It’s not very often someone will have all the criteria for having studio monitors whether it be living conditions, space restraints, reliable/long-term housing, money, etc. I can get away with listening to my music through car speakers or my relatively cheap Rookit speakers when I need to but I mostly rely on my headphones for all of these reasons :)

Really insightful, I have long been using headphones because I wasn't able to afford a pair of studio monitors. But then, the moment I got them, I noticed a huge difference in my mix. They translate well. I was able to get my vocals and bk vox to sit in the mix proper. Thank you so much...By the way, I like your energy and playful act. Keep it coming, brother.

Great advice and opinion as always, thanks. Yeah, I do a mixture of studio monitors and headphone (mostly because I'm concerned my wife is tired of hearing the same thing over and over 100 times, while I could still hear it again, just one more time :-). I've got Mackie HR824's for monitors, which I really like, and ATH-MX70x's for headphones which I also really like--advertized frequency range of 5Hz to 40KHz. Not hawking them but super clarity--- and to your points: it could sound different from the headphones to the monitors, and who knows what other people are listening on, and the room their in. So I generally mix late at night on headphones to let my wife sleep, monitors in the morning, increasing the volume and walking around the room. I agree with you--separation and effects vary depending on how you're listening and where you are in the room. Then, I throw it on my phone and go listen to it through the car stereo. Send it to some friends, see how much they like it. Thanks again for many great, informative videos!

Agreed on all points. I have Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250 Ohm headphones BUT I know the Sony MDR7506 headphones better and my mixes always come out better when I use those. Important to monitor on as many sources as possible. You are right about the panning and effects. You gotta listen through those monitors to really know how good that panning and those effects are.👍🏿

I am really new to recording and mixing. Until recently I was just smashing out rough stuff with a webcam mic or whatever else I could get my hands on. Anyway, now I am a guy with the gear but no idea apart from studio monitors, I don't have any yet. I just have a set of Edifier bookshelf speakers. I have a Rode NT1-A into a Focusrite Solo. My problem is, when I record my voice using my headphones and listen to it back on them it sounds excellent yet when I listen to it through the speakers I sound terrible.

Here's a thought for monitor usage: In the spring of 1980, AC⚡DC recorded their landmark Back In Black album at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas. Engineer Tony Platt took the tracks to another studio in London, England and played the album back though the studio monitors, and then re-recorded it. That's how he got the reverb. And that album went on to be the single highest selling Rock album in history. In fact, the only album in any genre that has sold more copies, is Thriller. But, it's Back In Black that has become a reference recording for a hell of a lot of artists and producers, and not Thriller. -How do you do that? How do you re-record your music to get the reverb that way? And then how do you use an existing album as a reference?
@philxdev11 ай бұрын
for me, a reference for a home studio recording would be Billie Eilish's Ocean eyes and her first album.

Great topic....The most useful times headphones have helped have been when I had a really neutral pair (not bright Sonys) and I was balancing and EQing while monitoring in mono, especially a stem or group. However, you need the nearfield acoustics to judge stereo and the acoustics from the big woofer mains to judge the clarity of how that long bass wave unfolds at the back of the room. Your reverb point is spot on, too. I just subscribed to your channel. You have excellent content. Where the f*ck have I been?
@mahmudsunnyvlogs8595 Жыл бұрын
Both r important headphones and monitors. Each has different sound story on the same platform.. Those who depend on headphone mix only.. its not 100% ok in my opinion. we need to listen the mix on big speaker small speakers mono speakers.. to fix the total dynamic range of frequencies... Sub , low , mid low ,mid , hi mid , hi.. all these matter most ..

I use them for years!!! I can manage to get nice mix with them, but bass just dont translate well. They can handle so much bass that you think its Ok, but in reality its waaay o bassy. So I learnt that my mixes should be low on bass so its “normal” in other references (car, speakers etc)

Hi was wondering if you can help me with this very specific problem. No this is not spam ha. I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 ohm headphones that’s sounding just about ok on my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen (which only has one pair of line outs at the back) My question is, should I buy a headphone amp and run it out of the Scarlett headphone out and then connect the headphones to that amp. Or should I just buy a pair of lower impedance headphones... in this case a pair of DT 770 Pro 32 ohm headphones. Which will have better audio quality. Nice video too. Thanks in advance.

Thats so weird, I've had the same pair of Sennheiser 380's since the day I started with Full Sail back in the gap and I've been hearing other producer mention the 280's a lot more than the 380's... Are the 280's that much better than the 380's?
@JAYFLOPROBEATS4 жыл бұрын
But I have noticed a big difference in mixing with my 380s verses my monitors, I tend to mix more in my montiors myself than my headphones I've tried on several occasions and I've always had to go back into the session and adjust things after using my headphones and then playing it back through my monitors so yeah I definitely see what you are talking about Wayne for sure. But I due plan on getting another pair of headphones perhaps I'll definitely look into getting another pair of Sennheisers (maybe just go head and cop' the 280's this time, buuuuuut I've been told that open backs are a good source of mixing too, they say that open backs give you a feel of more of the room or environment when mixing, I don't quite understand what that means however, I want to get a pair to see exactly what that means and how it will effect (or affect lol ) my ability to mix in headphones at that point in time.

Almost every engineer spend more money on monitors than headphones, which tells you what they value. Headphones are a tools, there to help the engineer isolate sound. Monitors are simulators, they are there to check playback experience. Headphones are the pan you cook your food in, monitors are the plate you put it on to eat it because you're civilized. You COULD eat hamburger helper out the pan, but your experience isn't going to be normal
