On a previous video I showed how to disassemble, clean, inspect, repack, and install tapered roller bearings but I didn't have to replace the bearings. So this video is going to show you all of my tricks to change them out, especially the outer bearing races and seals. This is the same exact job for trailers, cars, and trucks that have the thrust style tapered roller wheel bearings. I show absolutely everything you need to know and a bunch of extra stuff to make you feel confident to do the job yourself! Save money and start becoming a gearhead! Join us!
This is another episode of a new series on how to become a GEARHEAD! If you have ever wondered how people know so much about cars and are absolutely crazy about anything with a motor, then this is a great series for you. This is geared towards people that have no knowledge of cars but want to learn; however, the content in my videos does try to make solid connections between theory and practical applications so even seasoned gearheads will find the info useful. Tired of paying other people money to fix your car? Then ya gotta learn this stuff!
So share the channel with friends that love cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters, and anything else that goes Vroom Vroom!!! This channel is all about helping people learn how to fix their own cars, save their money, and finding a passion for working with their hands!

Great stuff, keep it up! I find that living in Alaska that I'm often having to deal with this kind of stuff on my own simply because there's nobody reliable to take things to or they are super expensive. I replaced a bearing on a boat trailer a few seasons back and wish I had seen this first. Your format is very clear to follow and the footage is well shot and well edited. Thanks for all the time spent on sharing this!

Thank you very much for your kind words! I work very hard to ensure the videos are high quality and are everything someone needs to know so they can do the job properly so it's always nice to hear back from viewers! Yeah it's awesome to learn and have these skills because it's way too expensive to get someone else to do it plus I always worry if the job got done properly. You ever do any gold panning in Alaska? Cheers!

@@wayofthewrench Got it done... A minor hurdle getting the races out. My wheel hubs are not notched so no where specific to punch them out which made it a bit tricky. Thanks for the great tutorials. Very informative and saved me some cash.

Sweet, this is the way. Yeah not all of them have the notches, when they don't you just have to make sure you have a sharp edge/flat end on you pin punch/drift punch so it doesn't just slip off. Glad to hear you got the job done! Cheers!

First time seeing your channel. I usually cut straight through the old race with a 1mm cutting disc to get enough flex to remove it. Enjoyed the info

Awesome, I hope I made a good enough impression for a sub! Yeah lots of good info in this one, no need to cut up bearing races anymore. I know someone who cut a bearing race once who cut most of the way through and used a hammer and chisel to crack the rest off. When he hammered on it, a small chunk flew off and went into a kids eye that was on the other side of the garage. The kid ended up losing the eye....sad story. Thanks for the watch!

Enjoyed watching, if you specific tool for the bearing races to tap out and new ones you can use large sockets as will do the same thing if you careful match the size up 🥳🥳

Thanks! Yeah good tip. You can also keep old bearing races and grind the diameter down a bit to drive new ones in. Thanks for the watch and your support for the channel! Cheers!

If you had the race loose at the bottom when seated would you Loctite it or replace the hub
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 5 ай бұрын
Proper answer, replace hub. If it was just a touch loose, maybe a little loctite especially if adding loctite made it seem more centered/tighter. They make an electric engraver that actually adds tiny burrs to the engraved area that you can use to "grow" the diameter on a part a couple thousandths of an inch. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!

On a 2000 Dodge Ram Van 3500 when replacing the rear race do i stop driving the race in when its flush with the top of the inner lip on the rotor?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 7 ай бұрын
Hard to say without seeing it but you could look at the other side to see how far it's pressed in. Usually flush with the part is ok and sometimes it's ok to have it down all the way. Just watch that the inner race doesn't push up against the bottom or it'll affect the bearing. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!

Please show a closeup of the bearing orientation. Thinner side?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 11 ай бұрын
The thinner edge of the outer bearing race goes to the outside so the larger flat surface goes down into the hole. Hope that helps!
@James-s4e3y
@James-s4e3y 7 ай бұрын
It's really easy to tell which side goes toward the outside of the rotor because the bearing will only fit in the side that goes outward and it's not nearly as thick.
