Here is a great way to cook in the outdoors without using a fire, electric or gas, just the power of the sun! It is inexpensive, and easy to make and maintain. Once again the Stanley Two Cup Cookset proves itself to be one of the most versatile cooksets that I know about. Check it out and leave me a comment in the section below, thank you so much for watching!

James, I've watched this video a few times now and everytime I amazed at how simple this solar stove is. I have all the materials to try this myself here at the house. So I'm looking forward to trying this out. Also, I appreciated all the hacks and knowledge you share with us, but I especially like the fact that your videos are reasonably short, you get to the point and don't drone on for the sake of talking. Very good communicator! Thanks again. Godspeed!

For cold weather get the vehicle reflective pad with the trapped air pockets. It insulates and provides some limited comfort above the felt like bottom of the pad in this vid. However, it will take much more room in/on your pack. Great for tent or hammock underquilt.

I purchased a Sun Oven, very highly rated, and expensive. I love it. I have made many meals in it especially in the summer here in the deep south when you don't want to heat the house. I have made many soup and casserole dishes. I made banana bread and pumpkin pudding. I loved making my dogs their dog food since I never feed them store-bought. If done carefully you can cook 2 meals at the same time, I will even make sweet and red potatoes. They went very high in price, now being $4.99 I paid $3.99, and worth every penny. It is a totally different experience from campfire cooking. Mine can heat up to about 375 degrees which is good enough for anything. I am watching all your videos I haven't seen yet. Thanks

There are so many great tips in this series, thank you for them all! As for this one, living in TX, you can simply set the can outside. A former coworker of mine would set a can of food on his dashboard at work and by lunchtime it was steaming hot. I'll have to try this on a cooler day.

Very clever. Especially with the multifunctionality of the sun shade. One suggestion i might add is using trekking or tent poles in place of sticks, just in case you dont have any access to any and if carrying either of those for a sleep system.

Hi James, another great hack. I really had hoped the Stanley people would contact you on your series of hacks on their cook set. I emailed them several hacks ago. I wonder how much difference there would be if you had one set w/o the black heat paint. Interesting to see the real difference. Don't know where you get the ideas for these hacks or if they are self generated but we all out here are enjoying them immensely. Thank you!

I've used this kind of reflective sun-screen & oven bag cooking multiple times. the trick is to be sure to use a black container to cook in and make sure the reflective surface really does track the sunlight. I've reached temperatures to bake, cook rice, cook eggs, etc. I keep a sunscreen & oven bag in my car trunk for emergency use also. Any food safe black container (even blackened with fire soot) will work to cook.

I know it's a bit different but here's one for ya. When I was younger working on HUGE construction sites with 2-3k construction workers we were ingenious. This was back when safety wasn't pushed as hard as it is now. Didnt have access to microwaves, or running water. We would take a box, throw some of the foam from lighting packaging around the walls of the box, then wrap a welding blanket around it. A couple 500 watt halogen stand light heads on top. Throw a can of soup, beans, chili, or whatever in at 9:00 break pop a hole in the lid and let it go. By lunch it would be scalding hot. Was great when way up north and stuck outside in coveralls, safety harness, and tool belt for 12 hr shifts in the snow all day.

I get water to about 115*F in the sun using a 1' square of foil and a half liter titanium cooking cup. Saves fuel, but I suppose one could also rehydrate at that temp - it is just at the upper edge of comfortable eating heat... Should work for larger sizes, too! Took about an hour or two (data in the other room).

Nice idea. I use the Stanley pot too, and have been following your mods. I'm wondering if you might get slightly more efficiency by moving the pot about 4-6" from the back of the reflector. Perhaps by taking a sheet of paper taped at the same diameter as the pot, holding it endwise (vertically), and moving it along the front/back axis of the cooking area you can find the most intensely-focused "sweet" spot?

@@WayPointSurvival if you have a bucket you can create a funnel shape of the sun-screen then insert into the bucket and with an improvised grill (wood sticks?) to hold the cooking container in the middle of funnel-in-bucket, cook that way. it gives reflective heat all around the container.

James, I wonder if you could suspend the pot by the bail over a bowl shaped reflector ( formed with the hole in the ground that you suggested ) with a tripod and string to get a more ideal aim at the sun and a pot location that would be closer to the focus point of your reflector? Could maybe shorten cook time on really sunny days or make this system work even on sort of overcast days. Waiting for the hack that changes this into a "Sleep System". LOL

I'm curious if this would render the "frying pan" hack unsafe as a result of high temp paint on the lid? Probably, but I suppose that there's nothing stopping you from using the Sierra cup as a frying pan, so no real loss.

" Great idea/ video. Could you use one of those 11" x 14" sized magnifying sheets to speed up heating?"

Probably, if you placed it at the right location and distance from the pot.

Another great one brother. Wonder if that bad boy will boil water on a hot sunny day ? Somebody has to give a go.

It very well might! Just a matter of enough time and sunlight to build the temperature.

That is awesome. I've watched a lot of videos on "baking" roll, cornbread etc using zebra cans etc. Over fire, alcohol stoves..... do you think you could bake food using the reflector?

Hey James! Thanks for yet another great video. I wondering how much heat loss you are really looking at without painting the kit? Did you try it before painting it? I’ll be interested to see how the cook kit works in this setup without painting it. Also, i know you been cranking out these videos, but was wondering if you ever selected a winner for the cook kit? Thanks and hope you staying strong James!

This would be good to know actually, great video but I don't fancy painting mine black
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 4 жыл бұрын
I prefer my cookware black. Wood is a poor conductor of heat and so a blackened pot absorbs much more of the radiant heat in the infrared spectrum from around the pot itself than a silvered one. Also a blackened pot is a more efficient emitter of infrared than a silvered one and so it also cools down faster. However, when sitting on a gas or alcohol stove, it's more about the conductivity of the metal than the color as it is being directly affected by the flame from mostly the bottom area. In this case, a copper or an actual silver pot (not Stainless Steel) would be the best conductor. I did not try it out in the silver stainless steel configuration as I wanted the best heat absorption possible. I have not yet selected a winner as I am waiting until I am done with the Stanley videos to do the drawing. I will post a video on it and name the winner.

Once again you came up with another good one. Simple and easy and you could cook more than one thing at a time. Would that be efficient enough to purify water ? Thanks for the video.
