Been camping for a long time , to me that's alot of extra gear to carry , I was first taught to make a list of what you are going to take , then when you got back , cross off what you didn't use , the more lists you make the shorter it becomes , which will show the skills you have learned... red river gorge use to be a great place to go in the 70's -> R.I.P. Fish , he walked off a cliff at night

I also carry a COMPLETE fire kit when i go to the wilderness which adds to weight but that's all right be couse i don't carry other useless items. I can easily start a fire with flint and steel so you can imagine i don't really need all that stuff but like you said, i really like it, it took me a while to gather everything and i feel better and safer when i have it with me. I really appreciate your videos.

I really like that case for your frying pan. And the fact that you have everything organized and compartmentalised or quick and easy access. I noticed a lot of the people on your comments don't seem to understand that people can pack whatever they want. People have different hiking goals. Some people are locked into thinking they need to be ultralight. Which makes sense if you're on a thru-hike or trying to crank out a lot of distance. They get said in that mindset and they never consider there are other types of hiking, or camping. Are people who actually carry large ice chests out into the woods. To each their own and whatever works for them right? A few of these people are crying around about you carrying redundancies. I'm afraid they're going to be in for some harsh realities if they continue living their life without having a back-up plan. It doesn't matter if you never use your backup stuff. The point is you had it if you needed it. These people have the mentality of not carrying a first aid kit because they don't plan on getting hurt. I don't think anyone plans on getting hurt. Why would you go if you planned on getting hurt? Personally I would skip the trip if I believed I was going to get hurt. Going out in the middle of nowhere you don't exactly have the ability to restock like you do in an urban environment. I would much rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. And we're not talking about that much weight. I mean in your video you had a couple of trash bags and a fire kit as redundancy. If these guys can't carry that they shouldn't be out there. I mean it's not exactly a straw that will break the camel's back. And they are so worried about the food they're telling you to break up a prepackaged kit and put them in Ziploc bags. Yeah that will cut down weight. Not exactly a significant amount unless you're talking about several days worth of food or even a week's worth. But it's also opening up for the possibility of contamination of your food. A lot of food products are packaged in a sterile environment and do not contain oxygen in the food packets. So they are taking a vacuum-sealed product and putting it in a Ziploc baggie with oxygen to contaminate it. And possibly allow the growth of bacteria. It really doesn't seem worth it to me. Now if you're making your own MRE style kit that's another story. Most people that do that have a vacuum sealing kit. Putting your food in Ziploc bags should be a common sense procedure. Instead of carrying a box of macaroni and cheese you could easily put it in a ziplock bag. That makes sense. Even a ramen noodle packet could be placed in a Ziploc freezer bag because you would only have to add hot water into the bag and eat it right out of the bag which is way more practical than the package it came in. But if you go around opening up sealed packages and putting them in Ziploc bags that's kind of ridiculous. I wonder if these guys do that with cans of soup, or cans of soda. Walking around would/could shake the soda up and it would bust the Ziploc seal which would mess up everything else and make it sticky. Even carrying soup or something like that in the ziplock bag has a risk of it puncturing or being squeezed to the point of the seal being broke. With everything in life you have to use common sense. There has to be some kind of advantage to doing something like that. The same guys probably don't carry eggs like you are they probably crack them open and put them in Ziploc bags too.😂😂😂 When all they had to do was put them in a small jar with vinegar. And they could last for days. The vinegar would not compromise the taste of the egg either. It would merely keep oxygen off of the egg and keep it from making the egg turn bad.

Oh man I agree completely! It’s cool to learn a thing or two from ultralight hikers. However, I will make up that weight with creature comforts and redundancies. When I was in Boy Scouts I always managed to pack the lightest while still carrying stuff like a small mirror and deck of cards.

I went camping about 2 months ago. I was boiling water and using a Bachgold water filter press (just like grayl but cheaper), and eating lots of fruit, including an icebox watermelon, and I couldn’t keep up with my hydration. Urine stayed dark yellow. Guess that’s what you get for being in the deep south in summer. I’ve found that silicone personal lubricant works well against chaffing. It won’t wear out with sweating but soap removes it. Plus it’s multi-use if your partner is with you. 😉

Water is definitely an issue in the summer. Fortunately, the area that we were headed to has a lot of springs with clean water that doesn't need to be filtered.

Yeah that's a great way to drop 1 or 1.5 oz. Personally if I want to lose that weight I just take a leak on the side of the tree and lose about a pound or two. And if you really want to cut back weight you can take a dump before you leave the house.

That's a lot in a smaller pack. More than 3 ways to start fire may be unnecessary weight. For short trips, smaller charger would save weight also - maybe substitute an Emergency Weather Radio with solar or handcrank feature that allows USB charging of devices - more bang for the weight.

Awesome video! I have a hack for you. If you have an old aluminum Boy Scout pack frame, you can do a mod to it and use it with a large US Army ALICE pack. With this, you can carry your bed roll or sleep system outside of the pack. With the lightweight aluminum frame, you can easily carry a 100 pounds and not know it. Due to a spinal compression injury, I can no longer carry a backpack. I am looking into ways how to modify a shopping cart designed to go up stairs into a sort of camping cart. This way, I would be able to pull or push it.

Thank you for your excellent content, that has served me so well over the years. I have a Dutch Army nested metal cup and water bottle, which I primarily use for cooking in the field. The problem is that it takes ages to boil water because I dont have a lid, and I struggled to find anywhere that sells JUST the lid at an affordable price in the UK. So I decided to use the "waypoint survival" methodology and make one myself. I used a recycled lid of a Fray Bentos pie can, a small hammer, a pair of pliers, a 5lbs anvil, a Swiss army knife, a Sharpie, a steel wire brush, some sand paper, and some elbow grease. I traced out the shape of the top of the cup on the underside of the tin lid, added a quarter of inch for good measure. Then set to work bending down the edges so it fitted snuggly on the top of the metal cup. Punched three small holes with the Swiss army knife to let steam out, scraped off all the paint and sanded it down, and then tinkered with it until it was a relatively loose "snap fit". The results were not pretty, look fabricated, but it works literally just as well as a store-bought lid. It will probably halve the time it takes me to boil a pint of water, and I traded "spending lots of money importing a lid" for "spending a few hours having fun making something". Im sharing this because what you do is really important. You are teaching people the skills they need to survive, even if that is forging their own their own camping and survival gear out of household waste. Anyone can BUY stuff to survive, but when the stuff runs out it will be the people who can improvise that will be kings. Thank you brother, you are a legend of the survival community as far as I am concerned.

James, let me tell you what I do for toothpaste. I squeeze dobs of toothpaste out onto baking paper. It squeezes easier if you put the tube in the fridge overnight. Sprinkle each dob liberally with baking soda - NOT baking powder. Leave it for two or three days and then sieve off the excess Baking Soda. When you want to clean your teeth pop one in your mouth and chew until your saliva reconstitutes it. Brush. Spit out as much goop as you can. Rinse with very little water and spit again. Rinse again and this time you can swallow. Repeat until your mouth is clean. I can clean my teeth with less than 1/2 cup of water. Lack of oral hygiene can lead to a lot of nasty long term ailments, heart problems being not the least of them.

Good on you James I like your pack mate. I have been playing around with my 65 lt and I have managed to over fill it lol. I think I 'am trying to pack it for a long term bug out but I need to attach my light shovel on it as well I think this will take time and then I have to test it for weight too lol. Make sure you don't lose sight of your partner they have the bacon and it would be a shame not to eat some lol. Have fun and stay safe on your adventures.

That's a well thought out system you have put together. When you get a system that good & it works for you stay with it. You mentioned Keto Snacks , I found some dehydrated camping meals that are really good. They are from " Next Mile Meals " and are Keto. I am a Ultra Light Backpacker and when not using the Freezer Bag Cooking the Keto meals are my go to choice. Being a Heart patient and Diabetic I have to watch what I eat. Just one of the fun things about being older ( 79 this year ). I have found the only thing I have to adjust for camping are my meals & meds , the gear basically stays the same. Several years ago I switched to Humming Bird Hammocks for sleeping when going extremely light weight. You would never believe the light weight of their tree straps. They keep me suspended and I'm 6,1 & 205. ( The standard 2 inch straps are 2.3 ounces for the pair )

Love the Isle Royal Jr., something I'd love to purchase. Great idea taking along something for "the rubby areas"! One thing I personally always don't take enough of is water, or a way to purify mass quantities of it (filter).

The great thing about the area that we went into is that there are plenty of natural springs with good clean water, so we didn't need to take any water purification equipment.

Kills me how I pack almost identical to that and my pack for 5 days is 50# before water. Granted, im a bigger guy, my sleeping bag is 5-7 pounds depending on the season. Summer I just use my woobi and maybe underquilt. I really need to upgrade my poncho too, it's an old vinyl one. That alone would save a bunch. My comfort item not willing to give up is a folding camping chair at 3.5# with a foot to keep from sinking in.
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 11 ай бұрын
Yes, I have spent a lot of time substituting gear and trying to find durable things that are also relatively lightweight. The one thing that I won't compromise on is my backpack though. It has to be tough and sturdy to handle the trip as I don't want things falling apart on me.
@stubnannie
@stubnannie 11 ай бұрын
@WayPointSurvival I picked up an L/XLG 60L 5.11 RUSH 100 half half-price on Amazon. I cannot get over how comfortable it is. Granted, the pack itself is 5.5#. I have no worries that I'll wear it out. I can upgrade my rain gear, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag to save a few pounds. Other than that I think I'm stuck with what weight I have. I have the Stanly single cook set w/ SS cup, a Stanly pan, pocket stove, one fuel can, cook grate, Bic lighter, wind proof matches, two knives, a Gerber Multi-Tool, Fiskars 1.5# hatchet, Gerber 10" folding saw, water filter, 32oz SS water bottle, 1qt canteen, hobo fishing kit, half roll of 400# bank line, head lamp, flash light, 1st aid kit, hygiene kit, 24"x24" cotton towel, camp towel, spare battery's, a charging battery for my cell phone, vinyl poncho, 10x12 tart, 6 tent stakes, 25' ridge line, 10' hammock w/ daisy chain tree straps & bug net, woobie, 3/4" sleeping pad, one change of clothes, light jacket. My really don't want to go with out a Moon Lence camp chair, back scratcher, & one Tigris 2 person mesh tent. I tried the ground mat, didn't like it.

We hang all of ours up in a bear bag.
@PeteOutdoors1
@PeteOutdoors1 11 ай бұрын
@@WayPointSurvival That works, of course, but I find it too difficult. Properly hanging a bag takes at least 30 minutes. Instead, in black bear country I follow the three rules, never eat in your tent, eat 100-200 feet away from your tent, use odor proof bags. In grizzly country I would use a hard sided container or an Ursack and bring a gun.

MRE for fun you have a weird sense of humor James! 35 pounds sounds about right for that load the ones that claim they can put together a 3 day trip loadout under 25 pounds with common everyday gear need their heads examined! personally i want to slap them back into reality the best i've ever done is 32 pounds! by the way do you know if there's county office where you can get topo maps? i'm tired of the google round around (everybody claims 5 minutes and 4 hours later you say the hell with it!!) to find them!
