We are planning to live in 6 cities in Mexico before deciding which one may be right for us for retirement. We speak Spanish. We hope to live without a car. Queretaro, Morelia, Guanajuato, puebla, Oaxaca, and San Cristobal de las casas is our short list. Also hope to check out Antigua and Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. We want cool weather or at least not hot, safe area, decent hospital close by, things to do outside, and if possible a Jiu Jitsu school for me…..my hobby. We are 12-16 months away from retirement and counting the days ! We love the USA, but we’d have to work many more years to retire here, and frankly we want retirement to be an adventure, not a rocking chair on a front porch.

No joke Mexico is so much, much better than the US. Mexico is more freer and richer than US. The cost of living is cheaper in Mexico and you get and make more money. Can you imagine that? living cheap and getting more money? you have so much more freedom, rights, options and money in Mexico than US. Qué interesante fenómeno está ocurriendo. La población estadounidense está en franco crecimiento . Eso explica porqué vemos a más gueros por acá, en el mercado de la Merced ,con la fama que tiene. Esto no pasaba. Era muy raro ver turistas norteamericanos. Y eso es algo que verdaderamente está cambiando la interacción de la gente nativa con su propio espacio público. .. como que está ayudando a valorar la riqueza del sitio. Y es que, sin lo que hoy es la Merced, no habría existido la gran Tenochtitlan. Lo que hoy es la Merced ,fue el primer asentamiento mexica . I would start with looking online for ways to make your income location independent. The social responsibility part is sooo true! When I was in line at immigration in CDMX, everyone had their masks on and phone away (as the posters everywhere said), except for one guy from the USA who was breaking both rules. A city near mine (USA) just banned plastic bags at stores and everyone was up in arms about their right to pollute the planet, never mind that we've had to bring our own bags to Aldi since Aldi was a thing here.

The US is seriously waaay over rated. Especially in California, prices for every day necessities has become unreal. Food portions have gotten smaller in fast foods and grocery stores. Order a sandwich at Togos or Subways in California and see how skinny the meat portions are now!

Every country is better than USA...there is zero of REAL democracy...people dont have rights to get health care for free, they dont have free universities(if its not free make it at least 5 times cheaper cause now is crazy expensive), you have to go to community college to get some real knowledge that in most european countries you get in high school(i am from serbia and to be a nurse you just have to go to high school...and after high school our nurses have amazing knowledge...they are getting jobs all around europe...in Sweden, Norway, all around Germany). Maternity leave is not paid while in every country in europe it is; just 10 days of vacation while in europe is at least 20; sick leave is not paid while in europe you get 65% of your regular hourly wage. Crazy high real estate taxes( expect to pay 10.000-20.000usd per year), in some cities also HOA is crazy high. Very bad schools cause no one wants to work in schools(math physics and chemistry teachers do not want to work for low salaries when they can earn 3 times more in some companies...in the end you get teachers that dont know a shit). Kindergartens are free from age of 5, while in Europe from age of 3. On top of that infrastructure investments are so low that America should be ashamed...Germany in next 8 years will invest at least 60 billions euros for new train tracks and new trains/stations, UK as well, Australia also. Pathetically small minimum hourly rate. Poor people have no right to be safe, cause if they are poor they will live in bad area(cause they cant afford better area to live) where their kid can every day be killed, raped or abducted cause america dont give a shit about safety of those poor areas. So all in all america takes so much from their people and dont give nothing...i mean it gives a lot but just to rich people so they can be even more rich.

I think the best place to check for something like this is to ask in Facebook expat groups. In our experience, many professionals, especially younger ones speak english so it shouldn't be hard to find one.

Hi, the credit bureau is totally independent from the US. Really the credit check that they do here is to ensure that you don't have any negative marks. It's not a score system like in the US.

If you are foreign, you do have to pay tuition. I checked and for UNAM (the school I mention in the video) it's currently 250 dollars as an admission fee and 275 dollars per class you take.

Great video! though something i want to add about the food, now i get what you are saying about everyone has personal taste but Mexico is famous for its food and thats a fact, (note thats not my personal opinion its listed on top countries food of the world) Also to note Mexico is known for using fresh ingredients you hardly ever see them use canned goods in their food, and just about everything is made by hand, a lot of the taco carts you see on the street most of them make the tortillas by hand. this is what makes the food stand out, its fresh not processed like usa food

I was told that children who are born at home, most of whom are from very poor families, do not receive birth certificates. Not having a birth certificate means the child is not allowed to attend public schools. Do you know if this is true? If so, is there anyone working to change this situation? I would like to know more about this.

Very interesting. All I know is that home births are not uncommon but these births are not excluded from registering the child. It's also not necessary that the child be a newborn to be registered as there are cases of kids 6 years or older that are registered for the first time. I would imagine a birth certificate is a requirement to register for school but it really wouldn't be that challenging logistically to make this happen unless you are not only living in extreme poverty but also extremely remote. There are also many indigenous people who simply don't participate in society in this way. I honestly have never heard of this but I can imagine it does happen.

It's rather common in Mexico to find people that lack the Life Permit (birth certificate), even adult people, that were born under unusual circumstances. There is a system to give them the paper, with requirements that vary from a municipality to another, but these certificates are never as good as a normal one.

En las ciudades no se ve mucho, pero en municipios rurales la falta de registro es lo bastante frecuente, por no decir común, para que existan reglamentos y programas de ayuda al respecto. En mi visión personal, yo eliminaría las absurdas leyes de nacionalidad por nacimiento, en todo el mundo.

Hi! Neither of us are directly sensitive to air pollution but the air quality is definitely no better than other major cities around the world. It's also quite clear that the air quality is much better in neighborhoods on the western/southern half of the city where there are lots of trees. Sometimes in the months of April and May the air quality does reach bad levels but generally throughout the year, it's what you'd expect in any major city. I hope this helps!

When it rains the air quality there improves a lot, so you can expect good air some time of the year, but during the dry and heat months it can be awful. For healthy air and still nearby MC come to Pachuca.

By bus from Pachuca it takes about one hour to reach the northern edge of MC but all the way to Unam would take between 2 and 4 hours, depending on traffic. In Pachuca we have Uaeh which is Hidalgo state university, also very good.

Yea that's why a lot of Mexican's are trying to leave Mexico...My uncle works as a Biologist In Mexico, graduated from UNAM, and has to wait to get paid from his company whenever they feel like paying them, so sometimes he doesn't get money until 4 months later. like what?? no one would allow that here in the states, people would be in the streets here if that ever happened. But that's how they treat their workers over there, including teachers. Teachers would say "if they depended on their teacher salary to live, they would starve." They do it because they want to help kids, but they have other means of making money while working their jobs because the government doesn't pay them every month. And when they do it's not the whole amount that they owe them. this is so messed up. My country is beautiful, but if it was so great, the borders wouldn't filled to come to the US. So Yes would love to see a video how Mexico could be better to their citizens. :) I love Mexico, our food and culture, but I'm happy we moved over here.
