Oh no! I hate to be the one bringing the news. Those trees sometimes don’t make it over winter in parts of So Cal too!

Yes, each plant you try and fail will turn into compost to feed the next plant. Death of a plant gives life to a new plant or food to an existing plant.

Go to HI to get another seed. :) I see it was pruned; it may not have like that. Here in Oakland, CA apple trees, blueberries, etc. sometimes they do not get enough cold hours and it just takes them longer to "wake up". I worry too. Sometimes when it is cold my trees in the entry way I stop to put my hand around the trunks to warm them, let them know my presence. Silly, huh?

Seed came from a random nice man I met so I won’t be able to get that again. I love that you put your hand on the trunk! I should try that too! I usually only hover my hands around it without touching it, and picture energy transferring to the plants. You have such a delicious variety of fruits grow!

Great info! I lost most of my treasured collection during the 2020 TX freeze. It is always sad to lose a friend, but as you stated it also opens up more opportunities to grow and learn from.

My final test is to pull the tree itself and if it pops out, the roots died and no longer hold to the soil. Got a Panama Red that I'm still holding out hope on that seemed to take quite a hit this winter.

@@wendiland I did that check today and it pulled out. But I did find a 'live' root and put that into a small separate pot to see what happens.
