My brother has some windows with unhappy views so he has done something genius that he calls “a green window” where he adds a little trellis on the window sill and grows a low-light vine to cover the entire window from the inside! You still see peaks of light, but instead of an unfortunate view, he sees wonderful greenery. You can also lean or hang a vintage stained glass window in front of the window - create some privacy and enjoy the colours from the glass. 😀 They are pretty affordable at salvage shops.

You forget to add PLANTS to your list! You showed vases of flowers, but I love having plants. I don't have a huge number, but it's interesting to see what I can manage to keep alive. If people don't want to spend too much $, they can ask a friend or family member for a cutting to put in water.

People are scared of color (my personal guess) because it's going to cost money to replace something that they end up not loving. I think we have a big problem with not understanding our own personal tastes. We choose colors based on trend or a whim and then after spending time, money and energy on a space, we end up hating it later, because it isn't us, we're disconnected from knowing ourselves. So, I think it's pretty important for people to chill and get to know themselves a little more before taking a leap. Or...do as you said, Paige, try it out with smaller things that are easily switched out. Experimenting in baby steps is probably the best option.

Exactly. But I think sometimes it's not even a matter of not knowing yourself, but not knowing the effect that a certain color has on interiors. For example, my favorite color is red but it is one thing to wear a red dress every now and then and a whole other thing to have it on a wall every single day. It's not relaxing. My first apartment was full of red accents that I was 200% sick of after just a couple of years. My second apartment had light blue accents ("hey, this is calming! That is the opposite of red, right?"). Same story. I felt like I was living in a kid's room after a while. That's why today I have a neutral apartment and I only add color in small doses and inexpensive things.

There is also the fact that matching colors can be scary for some people. It's not just about choosing one color, but a whole color palette. Most people have no clue how to do it in fashion, let alone with interiors, which is a much more permanent thing.

@@marjorievanelven1703 Very true. I struggle with that myself. My favorite color is blue, but I found that I'm not really attracted to blue rooms, of any shade. Also have to consider your own mind. Some people don't like to be overstimulated, others desire it. But again, that also plays into knowing yourself and how you react as well as the effect. Completely agree.

An alternative to covering the window with an opaque piece of art is to hang a stained glass piece over/in the window. I have a couple stained glass pieces hanging over my kitchen window (faces a sad parking lot), and it’s completely transformed the happiness of my kitchen ❤️

Another way to make your space feel happier is to display things that are personal and meaningful to you! Like using a vase that your sister made in a pottery class or framing a card from your grandma or putting your kid’s lego creation or art project in a prominent spot, it just makes everything cozier

My grandfather was an artist and my mom is an amazing quilter. My walls are covered in color. And you are 100 percent right…color…especially color combinations when they are well thought out and sing together…those bring a special kind of joy. I am so tired of neutral everything in mainstream decor (which is all I can really afford). Thank goodness for lines like Jungalow for Threshold from Target. Color for everyone!!!

I love color, and one of my favorite ways to add a hit of really saturated, vivid color is through glass and ceramic objects. Glass and ceramic can go really vibrant without looking tacky, because psychologically we know that the color isn't some cheap dye or sprayed finish, it's integral to the material. So I love to look for bright, acidic yellows and eye-searing orange, and electric blue pieces, but mix in clear glass and white ceramic as well. To me, if you're going to have a glass object, and you don't use it as an excuse to introduce color in some way, it's a wasted opportunity.

I can relate to your parents bedroom. When you have kids, it’s relaxing to be in a space with almost nothing. We had a box spring, mattress and nightstands -and loved it. Now looking for a four poster bed, wallpaper, curtains, artwork. Everything has its season. (Also don’t make vids that don’t make you money unless they bring in subscribers. I totally agree using fire place, keeping fruits on the counter. I don’t have fire place but I light candle every night. I know how much watching flame helps me to calm down my mind. Decorating rotation is one of the smart ways to keep your home refreshed. I do it seasonally. I change bedding decorations, pillows and blankets around the apartment.

You are the single most authentic creator when it comes to interior design. I've been into interior design for a decade and it's SO HARD to find good content. Everything's been done and said, there's no new perspectives, there's this focus on magazine homes and it's so f*cking boring. Every video, your explanations, your examples: it's a breath of fresh air. THANK YOU from Amsterdam! :) As for the copyright issue, I'm pretty sure there's some loopholes. 7:36 i live in moscow and here we dont have a lot of sunny days, so a lot of people make a mirror window slopes. that's way all the natural light that comes into the room doubles and the window looks so much bigger

Hot tip for mirror placement for maximizing window light: Track where the light hits the most when it comes in the window throughout the day. If your window faces west or east, you may get the most light bouncing around by putting a mirror on the southern facing wall instead of the wall opposite (if you're in the northern hemisphere). This orientation also helpful with giving plants light.

Yes to fireplaces! I just bought a wonderful old Victorian with 3 (!) fireplaces…and they all work! I’m so excited to use them. Have never understood why people stopped; instead turning the fireplace into a resting place for the TV 😖 And thank you for reinforcing my bedroom first. I’ve contemplated guest rooms, but guests won’t be there as much as I will. I’ll keep ‘em cozy but am pivoting to me first 😊

I totally agree with the importance of making your own bedroom beautiful. It's your sanctuary, refuge, rest. It's well worth it. We had five kids at home and our room was mostly off limits unless someone was bringing me lunch in bed when I was sick or something. But I've always loved our bedroom and continue to take care of it and keep it beautiful. Light the fire in the fireplace! Yes! We have a wood-burning stove on the main floor and love to have a fire to look at and get warmed up next to. Great tips, Paige!!

I drug out a very large fine art canvas that my husband bought for my birthday over a decade ago. It worked well in our high ceiling, all wood, modern contemporary upscale home but we moved. We now live at the beach in a very bright and sunny open concept home. I just could not see this very large slightly moody still life in this beach house so it was stored away for almost 13 years. Since watching you (and Drew/LF) I dug the canvas out of storage. I actually like the contrast-for the autumn/winter months at least. I took the colors and using complementary colors and tones I’s adding in oranges and greens where I never have before. We bought a very colorful alpaca throw at a local shop today that has an array of deep oranges with a sunnier orange…my husband wanted the gray and white…I said “trust me” -he loves it.👍🏻 Bringing in unexpected color has made me SO much happier! I plan to switch out the painting in the spring…maybe one of my photos in large format. Thanks for shaking things up Paige!

Art in your useless windows is a really good point! I used to live in a bedroom that had the view out to the ugliest backyard. Everything was just grey and littered. But thankfully my window had two shelves buildt across it(it had a deep window sill), so I filled those shelves with plants and decor! And it made everything happier! :)

Love having the doors open in summer. Sometimes local dogs and cats wander in. Once a little bird flew in and perched on the mantlepiece. A friend painted some colourful pictures for us and they made a big impact on our drab sitting room. Art and books are safe places to put colour.

I have a great tip for a better home life: design your view. If you don't have a great view outside of your window see whether you can either change the view on the outside by adding flowers or a fountain or something to watch. If it's your balcony make sure it looks great from the inside too. If you can't control the view outside of your window then you need to make the window itself as pretty as possible so you're looking at the window frame and maybe a Tiffany's glass ornament or stained glass, even hanging a flower pot from the center of the window can make the eye focus on the flower rather than the neighbors trash cans.

I recently did this with a HUGE moon map poster from an estate sale and put it over the window above my bed because I’m done trying to make that room light and airy it’s just not happening(I have the living room for that) 😭 but with what little light that does come through the window it illuminates the poster and it looks like a huge full moon thats actually glowing.

A great idea I saw years ago was a large window that looked out onto a brick wall. But the vertical blinds were turned at a 45 angle and reflected the George Washington Bridge onto a large mirror on the adjacent wall. Genius !

Actually, you want to position your bed so you can comfortably see the door, so you don't miss opportunity coming in to your life. But you don't want your bed to line up with your feet pointing out the door. Because when you are dead, they will carry you through that door feet first. Looking forward to your color episode. I love living with color. I probably over do the color in my home. But I find a neutral home, or God forbid and all white home, to be so uncomfortable. I find myself looking around for that one splash of color, even if it's just a chewing gum wrapper on the floor.

Another idea instead of adding art to a window is having a stain glass. I have two large stain glass pictures in my bathroom windows. It gives privacy while allowing in the light and adding art to the space. Also I’m not a big fan of curtains in the bathroom due to how much moisture is in there.

I've got a pretty good idea for a sad view window, we have a window that overlooks fire escape and let's in hardly any light, we've managed to have a grape vine attach to the fly screen and the leaves get enough light to give us this amazing effect of backlit fresh green cheerful nature framed in a warm wood window frame of our dining area.. that spot gets about an hour of direct sunlight a day but when it does it's magic 🥰

Bouncing the light is such a great tip! My current rental doesn’t get much direct light, but I’ve found that even just using a glass coffee table or a large framed art piece behind glass helps bounce off the light in a nice way :)

Yes, kids are happier too with less options of toys available to play with. It's better for their development to not be overwhelmed. Also, when my kids were little I had a noisy toy rubbermaid bin and when I rotated the toys only one toy that made any kind of annoying noise was aloud from that bin into the rotation. Happiness and sanity.

I also open all the windows and curtains the moment I get up in the morning. A house needs to get some fresh air everyday and the light helps you feel awake and alive (at least I think so). My nephew and his wife stayed in my house for five months and I just couldn’t understand how they never opened the window of the bedroom they were staying in AND they would close the living room curtains anytime I wasn’t home. That drove me absolutely bunkers! Also, I was so distracted in this video by the bookshelf in the back. I kept thinking how I would rearrange the books by color and how nice that would look (I know, I know, I’m annoying like that).

Did you have more luck with the House and Garden videos in terms of copyright? I love seeing you comment on any home tours, so wouldn’t need to be AD! I would also be so interested in more home reviews or tips on decorating standard houses with less interesting architectural bones, or rental properties. I feel like you’d have some unique ideas (the rest of the internet just says geometric peel and stick wallpaper and stick on subway tiles is the answer …). Video on where colour went sounds fascinating too. In terms of actually painting spaces, I think it comes from people not knowing or trusting their tastes as well as financial commitment and resale issues, but also perhaps an obsession with spaces being bright. Whilst I absolutely agree that natural light is integral, I think people think white is always the answer. Sometimes you should lean into the natural hues of the room to make it appear brighter (e.g a yellow if it never looks fresh enough in white), or succumb to the cosy vibes of a dark space by painting it a dark green, for example. People don’t let the house and light guide them- I think they constantly fight against it, believing you can’t go wrong with white. But applying a one size fits all approach always results in a lack lustre result. Honestly, could watch you talk about bins and I’d have a nice time x

Happy tip from an amateur interior designer here: always use cafe curtains on bottom half of windows with over draperies to close at night. This way all day long you can see the sky/clouds/sun/moon over the top of the cafe rods, staying in touch with out doors while maintaining privacy. First thing to go when moving into a new place: horizontal blinds that block the top half of windows!

Color, sculpture, different shapes add a "happiness factor" as well as homemade items. I things that I've made from glass to ceramics to metal and paintings that all add visual interest as well as patterned rugs etc. I move things around for seasons including wall art. Helps to keep things fresh.

The first picture you used with the artwork on the window, I follow that account. And I thought it was genius, I brought these hanging frames in Matt black, with the idea of using easily replaceable art, to hang over a window that goes onto a public walkway.

Yes to more about Feng Shui. Feng Shui also has ideas about color to enhance certain areas. It is too hot where I live to have fires here most of the time but I have small yellow, orange lights (think candy corns) over logs in the fire place that make it bright and cherry.

Decor rotation is my second name, I have a dresser in my bedroom and I change the decor on it every other week 😅 it became my hobby at this point. I don’t buy new decor but my favourite thing to do is using the same stuff in different ways

My fav room in our house is color blocked with primary colors. I’m also a big fan of prisms in windows… growing up we had one in the kitchen window and my mom always said it was my grandmother smiling down on us :) I have one in almost every window that gets direct light now

What is also a nice thing to do to a dark window is putting a lamp or a candle on it (if possible of course), adds another nice layer of light + looks cosy from the outside. Also I love your home reviews! If youtube keeps blocking them maybe you could consider patreon as an option

One thing I plan to do (in line with good lighting) is painting a room in a yellow/beige colour. This way it will reflect the light in a way that makes it seem like the sun is out. I think a mistake that a lot of people in grey climates make is painting their walls grey.. that's just asking for sad times.

5 mins into the video I realized I stopped watching your videos because I'm not able to rehab my own how I'd like for one because it's new to me and two I'm still learning what things I likenas far as furniture and colors and themes. Also I'm used to decorating an apartment as I've had one since I was roughly 24,, I'm 31 now. But watching this video an other you encourage your followers to explore when they're able to and you don't make us feel like it isn't possible to create the space such as thrifting and other ways. Warmth and happiness at home for me is ambient lighting, sentimental objects and art, chill music, scented candles and seeing my three fur babies happy in their space.

Yes to the fireplace! 6 months out of the year I have a fire burning all day- on a cold day there's nothing better than coffee by the warm glow & crackling wood of a fire. It's my greatest pleasure.

You could also cover windows like that in window clings. You can do a stained glass look or any type of pattern, there's tons of them.

What makes my home feel happier is taking off my outside shoes once I'm through my front door, all the dust and the muck stays outside. I have rubber slippers for inside which I wear with fluffy socks in the winter.

My bedroom is only for sleeping. I once put a TV in there and I never used it. I never use the desk either. I spend most of the time in my living room and kitchen so I prefer spending money there. I like your black cabinets and black handle hardware.

You can put decorative stick on frosted window panes on the actual glass panes. They're a privacy thing, but good for eye sore views. They come in traditional architectural lace patterns and many other styles. I think you can even cut your own designs?
