It could be done faster by hand on equipment that cost less than $200. The cost to production output just isn't there. Hell you could make an entire knife by hand from blank flat stock to finish in 2 hours.

Can you reuse the abrasive? Is it sand or gypsum like the big machines? Will there be other sizes? Will there be a 240v version for the rest of the world? How much power in watts does it require per inch?
@Keith_Ward8 жыл бұрын
I thought they use garnet for the abrasive? Probably not reusable unless there is an easy way to dry, mill, and sift out the contaminants. It would be sort of like a muller that is used in the casting industry in order to recondition casting sand. Not sure about the condition of used particles, they may loose their "edge" for cutting after being used once. But I agree, it would be nice to reuse.
@bluedeath9968 жыл бұрын
You are correct it is garnet, I had a brain fart. But a professional cutter runs at a minimum of 12000psi and some run at 60000psi and need to be run under water because the sound can rupture your eardrums, this is on the other hand is pretty tame and probably doesn't degrade the garnet very much.

So my question is, what is the cutting material cost per inch/hour/ etc? It is NICE that it will cut things out like that, but if you cut a Christmas tree ornament using $30.00 worth of abrasive, it isn't practical. Will this machine use ANY suitable cutting material, or is this a case of getting the razor for "free" and being required to buy the cutting material from the manufacturer (to maintain a warranty, or for other issues)? Lets use the bicycle sprocket as the example. What was the cost of the cutting material used to cut out that sprocket?

Check at 8:12: Cutting the sprocket in 4.7 mm aluminium: takes 1 hour 36 minutes and 14 Kg of garnet costing about $8. The hoppers are specified to take 13.5 kg. Taking into account set-up and clean-up, you need over 2 hours to do that sprocket. Nobody would make a sprocket out of aluminium of course - you need something much harder, so a lot more time and many times as much garnet. The machine cannot be used unattended. This seems to indicate that cutting sprockets and gears is not something this machine can be used for.

probably, like in every cutting/grinding machine mankind has ever made =P the beds are made as thin and hard as possible, if you look closely you can see the mesh in the bottom, i dont know how thick it is because all you see is a veery thin edge so with hiles between so the abrasive has as little as possible to cath on to, in heavier industri machines it's ofc a lot heftier but for this small scale it looks good :)

@GeofDumas8 жыл бұрын
I could see this being a good use of money if the knifemaker is trying to save $$$ on damascus or timascus, which can add up super quick. Otherwise, I guess it'd be good for proofing a print that they're sending to a waterjet company. That might save time and lower anxiety, which is a plus. For things like gears and other things that may normally be done with a series of complex bandsaw cuts, drills, and filework like you might see on Clickspring, it would be great if the shop did that stuff all the time but never made large numbers of a single part
@JamesBuckleyusa8 жыл бұрын

@EcoMouseChannel8 жыл бұрын
$6000 is a lot of money for a "desk hold down" on the off chance that, maybe, someday, you'll get around to using it. It's kind of like a color laser printer. If you are a graphic designer, you'll use it all the time for proofs and printing things out to test. But if you just are a regular guy, who buys one at Costco, then it'll likely sit most of the year unused. Kind of how 3D printers are turning out to be for a lot of people. I don't think of this as being comparable to something like an Omax, (one that I've sent off part to have cut) because cut quality, kerf and draft aren't going to be the same. I can see the Wazer being more for one-offs and prototype work. Because a part that was cut here, and worked in your assembly, might have completely different tolerances to a part that you sent out. But back to what I was saying, you, as the inventor/engineer/maker guy needs to understand all the various machining processes, and be comfortable with outsourcing your projects to larger shops that have those capabilities. Because there are subtle differences between machining, laser, plasma, EDM and water jet. It's important to know why you'd choose one over the other. Because you'd just end up making something more expensive and complicated than it has to be, just because you are enamored with the techy-coolness of having a water jet, when say, plasma might be just fine at a fraction of the cost.
@EcoMouseChannel8 жыл бұрын
Of all the processes, water jet needs the most baby sitting. Too much can go wrong all at once. You've got super high pressures, splashing water and electricity, clogged nozzles, staying on top of abrasive loading... water jet is not a beginner's tool. It's more for shops that have outgrown their plasma tables, or need the very specific cold cut edge properties that plasma and laser can not offer. And you'll know when you need to know about that. The one cool thing about water jet is it's ability to cut cork, rubber, leather, fabric, acrylic, wood, metal etc... However, laser can do the same thing, with much less hassle and clean-up. No tank management, sludge removal, water scum & slime...

110V (115V) only. What about the rest of the world, not interesting enough? I find it a bit of a waste of developing time, nowadays it's not to much of an hassle to make things 115/230V compatible. Only thing that's a bit more complicated is getting the CE license, but you don't have to go for that straight away.

This is a common problem when moving from country to country. a 5000w stepup transformer is fairly cheap: www.amazon.com/ELC-T-5000-5000-Watt-Converter-Transformer/dp/B00EBC5HSS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1473785888&sr=1-1&keywords=5000w+step+up The problem is the cost of garnet you will go through. They state 0.33lbs/min. The example bicycle crank on their kickstarter took 168 minutes to cut, so you're looking at around 55lbs of garnet at somewhere between $0.60 and $1.10 per pound. If the transformer is an issue for you, imagine paying for and storing that much (unreusable) garnet for each cut.

In my opinion water jet is only practical when you need to cut very large or thick pieces of metal. That said a water jet of this footprint is nothing but a novelty. A commercial waterjet cutter operates in the pressure range of about 50,000-90,000 PSI (pounds per square inch), depending on the machine. To achieve these pressures, the pumps are quite/very expensive. So to scale this down to a small benchtop model is quite a challenge. They would need to design in the highest-pressure pump that they could manage without breaking the bank as far in terms of the retail price of the machine. So when the pressure is greatly reduced, the speed will also be reduced significantly, and the maximum thickness of material that can be cut will also be reduced very significantly. By comparison, a pressure washer that one might buy at Home Depot or Lowes would be a maximum of around 3600 PSI. Heavier-duty pressure washers may achieve water pressures of 5000-10,000 PSI. Just as a point of reference, there are large commercial waterjet machines that can cut 2" thick steel plate if necessary. These machines usually have table sizes that can accept plates of 5' x 10' (often the maximum).

It would need to be carefully dried to be reused but it may still have some life left in it, it will dull though and cutting speeds may need to be changed. Come on... everybody has a 220v dryer outlet at the very least. Plus the rest of the world can use it, and you'll get greater cutting capacity. But aren't switching power supplies sooo very common now? I'm looking at the back of my TV and it says 110v/230v 50/60hz. If people had the option to run at 110v if they needed it, but understood that cutting capacity would be lower. That's a reasonable request. I can only be interested if it could cut 1/4" plate, otherwise, it's basically a toy. I can import a 320w Laser with 4x8 bed from China, right now... that can do 1/4" plate for that price. And that runs on 220v.

@EcoMouseChannel8 жыл бұрын
There are no direct links. You have to make a deal with a purchasing agent. Log on to Alibaba, search out what you are looking for then put in a bid. If you are looking for 150w laser, with water chiller, honeycomb base that raises and lowers, auto-focus, etc, etc... you get back dozens of companies all competing for your dollar. You'll quickly learn the lingo, the specs, what's crap, and what's good. You can pit companies against each other and get a really good deal. Making sure you can get 24/7 tech support, or seeing "your" machine make a test cut before it's loaded into a container, guarantees against machines arriving DOA are all good things to ask about. Also, you need to have "a guy" here that can fill out the paper work, and get your machine out of customs and on to a delivery truck. That usually runs no more than $300. If you want to avoid all that, and buy a machine that's already been vetted, and that's stateside already, expect to pay a hefty mark-up. As that is their business model to re-sale machines. There are literally hundreds of them. MournTech is going to be the cheapest, but they have a showroom in Stockton CA, that you can actually go and visit, and get local support. Anyway, companies that I've personally vetted are Omni CNC, HSG Laser and Elephant CNC are all top notch manufacturers that will literally make any machine configuration for you.

I import stuff all the time, and sometimes just to re-sell. If you know what you are looking for you can get stuff well beyond the quality of Harbor Freight. And let's be honest, companies like Jet, Laguna and even your favorite power tool company are all made over there. It's in the specifications and details that makes the tool a high quality piece over import junk. I learn the ins and outs of everything I intend to purchase from overseas. I've stumbled across manufacturers that make for the big boys, but also private label at a fraction of the cost. It's really not that big of a deal to shop the world, in this global economy we live in. In fact, it's kind of fun!

2019 update: it's now over $9,000. I helped fund this project originally on kickstarter and it sold for $1,200. Extremely disappointing. They're selling out to greed and commercial use.
