Here is a few things that should help you. Buy your white oak wet. Machine it to size. router the two edges with a 1/4" round over bit. Build a open top box out of 1x10"s and line it with plastic. Fill it with water and then put your ribs in it with cement blocks on top of the ribs. Let them soak for a week. Keep your steam box at 212 degrees. Don't put any scarfs neat the chine. They will fail later. I always put scarfs on the center line of the keel. I use West System for all gluing. I would not put butt joints like you did on the keel. Rot will start there. Put 1 to 8 scarfs there. I hope this helps.

Thanks James, just found this comment in the likely spam folder which I didn't even know existed. Sorry for the late reply!

Well done, you thought out the bending process nicely and made it look just as you intended and not as hard as you imagined. Sheesh, you’re just about a pro at that now. The boat name is is perfect and it is looking a damn sight better!!!

Thanks, I'm looking forward to painting the name on the transom using gold leaf as I used to paint signs back in the day. Will make a good video.

Loved your idea of a road trip Snake Mountain Boatworks. Would love to see his operation. And he seems a bit of a character that does top quality work.

Cliff Crowley with this virus thing, might not happen till fall as it won’t be that long until I’ll be captaining on the river. (Hopefully)

Sometimes if you throw your dry rib stock in the river and let it soak for several days or even weeks it will bend much better.

I agree, and will probably do that once I process and size the rib stock for the skiff soon, but the new stuff I had for this video was in log form only weeks before bending so it couldn't get much wetter! I've even seen where the ribs were stored under the ice with a rope up to the surface to retrieve it in the winter. May do that, it would make a good video.

Hi! Maybe the reason for the cracking of your oak rib was lack of steaming time. I've seen Norwegians and Swedes soak their wood in sea-water during the winter, and in the spring they use it with great ease. Could give it a try. I'm currently repairing a 19 ft CAT, with plywood and fiberglass. I've subscribed to your channel and will continue to watch your good videos. Thanks!!!

Thanks Paul! Those first boards were decades old since being cut, I only tried them for lack of anything else around. You're right, once I got that green lumber it was smooth sailing:) I am thinking about getting some prepped and storing them in the river for future use. We will have a facebook page soon where you can share images of your projects. Glad to have you aboard!

I like the pop up steam box setup. My current box must weigh 150 lbs. I can barely move it myself. Really enjoying watching this project take shape!!

Thanks Andrew. The whole thing was pretty cheap as well. It won't be long now and you'll be back at your morning river ritual before work.

Great video. Please keep showing the "failures and mistakes" - they are helpful and hopeful for those of us just starting out. I like the format of your videos. Regarding the steaming set-up - any concerns with CO or potential fire in a building full of wood chips and sawdust (former firefigher here). Lastly, is there any episode demonstrating the proper sistering of a cracked frame which cannot be removed? - Looking forward to the next one.

I have the burner set pretty low and the building is not airtight for sure so I don't think the fumes are a problem. I thought a lot about the fire issue, that is why the only shavings near the door are what gets tracked there. Also that is the lowest part of the floor and has, until today, had a bit of standing water, so everything is really wet. I may rake out the sawdust and shavings when the weather turns and add it to our huge compost pile. It was a big help to walk on it in the cold weather, my feet were never cold. Glad you mentioned the mistakes, it is a struggle for me to convince myself to leave them in, not that I didn't edit out the really stupid ones:) As far as sistering, I don't have a video, nor do I think I know that much about the proper way to do it. There are so many opinions. I would check out Tips From a Shipwright on KZbin, he is really good and may have one. Thanks for coming aboard!

Yep you’re supposed to soak the wood if it’s dry before you steam it lol

I've got a small creek/ditch that runs through my property. Maybe I'll store some in there ready to go for steam bending emergencies!

This video was very pleasing to watch. Great work Scott! I loved the chapter format. Do the pros do their bends over their knee? JK. Looking forward to watching the next one.

The knee bending trick might not be as much fun with shorts on.

A full length 6 inch PVC pipe would have been better than the stove pipe you used. You wouldn't need the rags to hold the steam in. The cap for the end of the PVC doesn't need glue, friction fit is good enough. You can drill through the PVC tube for the steam hose and use a wood disc to cap for the end, where you remove the frames. Just sayin'.

I thought about using PVC, not sure why I settled on the stove pipe except maybe that I can take it apart and store it easier if I decide to. I can tell you that the escaping steam out of steel is much more cinematic than a piece of PVC :)
