WCS BEN MORRIS Comp Tips for Jack N Jill

West Coast Swing Champion Ben Morris (www.BenMorrisDance.com) taught an awesome class with tips for competing in Jack and Jill, and Strictly contests. My thoughts - For the Sugar Push - the lead should push on the "3 and" on the follower before the 4, and then the anchor step. Also - for the famous "Basket Whip" - don't be too crazy with your feet. Even though the Basket Whip is a sort of something out of the Texas Tommy Swing Out, this is not Lindy Hop--this is smooth West Coast Swing, so if you do "hopping" on the Basket Whip---this mars the character in the West Coast Swing, and the judges will mark you down big time. Also - treat most basic West Coast Swing moves as if you do in Latin Hustle. Especially in the L Side and R Side passes. Respect the lady's slot--she owns it, but don't go too well away from the slot or you will be off time. Finally - at the basic level, try to avoid doing the "hitting the breaks" movements. The follower may not get that break exactly, and result in a mistiming when the music for WCS starts back up again. Hope this helps.
