This is a really smart concept! When I miss a step in West Coast Swing, I panic because I feel like I need to get exactly back 'on track' with my footwork. This shows me that WCS is more forgiving than I thought. Thanks!

It’s crazy how this structure reminds me of chord progressions in music!! You start from the tonic (starting point), and then go to the predominant to prep for the drama (follow walks towards the lead), and then go to the dominant (something fancy happens), and then back to tonic (the anchor). The actual chords being used doesn’t really matter as long as they correspond to the correct function. As long as the functions are correct, anything will sound good!

Massive lesson for me today. I have always intuitively believed that being in rythm is being in step. And not necessarily that I have to be on the right foot. You've just confirmed it for me. Thank you!

Fantastic videos guys. You have the best walk throughs I've seen on KZbin. I used to do a fair bit of Line dancing back in the day (1996-2006) when it was fairly popular down under but it sure has changed now. Not that there ever was many venues other than classes and a few socials down here. We sadly don't have the Bars and Saloons like you have over there but i always liked doing the partner dances when i had someone to dance with. Lucky the ladies were never as shy as i was about getting you up on the floor! That was something i always enjoyed. I did injure my leg and that stopped me dancing for years but things are better now and I'd sure love to get back on the floor with my long time girlfriend i met after giving up line dancing. I'm showing her these videos and she really likes the sort of style this dancing offers. But i need to find a good venue some where in Melbourne (Australia) not Florida! We can go as the country scene has really changed (dissapeared) here, Sadly very few places and the only ones I've seen are a group of older retired people doing basic line dancing..... But we will keep looking might have to move to Texas!

Thank you so much for watching and commenting :-) Recently, we've had a lot of people reach out to us from Australia. We've had several conversations about how much fun it would be to teach some workshops there! That's awesome that you're getting your girlfriend interested. Country dancing has surged in popularity over the last few years and continues to grow. We'd bet money that you'll see a dance hall or two show up there in Melbourne at some point (or you could just move to Texas where there are literally hundreds of them). Let us know if we can help!

I have seen WCS classes where "complication" seems to be the key concept at every WCS class. I gave up trying to develop this dance because of that. (among other reasons) Some classes were very good of course. Your approach to focus on the basics and what is really important is refreshing and with this in mind I hope to make WCS fun again. So, thank you for another enlightening video. MCDGA!

I'm struggling with the start step and going between East and west coast after a whip. I began to love WCS when I discovered so much zydeco during Mardi Gras worked so well with WCS.

Hi there! While going back and forth between ECS and WCS is simple enough, we're left wondering what the benefit of doing that would be?

My teacher calls it a starter step.
@countrydancex
@countrydancex 2 жыл бұрын
@@heladamama92 OK, I see what you're saying now. However a starter step is just a way to start WCS... it's not actually switching from ECS to WCS.

It's taken me a month to understand the rhythm. I think I have it. Now I'm beginning a few more advanced whip patterns. I love WCS. I discovered how well it adapts to zydeco and I was hooked. I also wanted to complement your 2 step instruction. The tips you gave for the outside diagonal were a game changer for me. However, my ADHD causes so many problems while I'm trying to 2 step that I simply gave it up. Id love to see A WCS starter step instruction. I watch many different instructional videos, I truly enjoy dancing. And I really get the most out of your instruction. Thank you for reaching out with a reply. You two are really terrific.

So what i get out of this video is there are a few different types of footwork involved in west coast swing? Is my assessment accurate, or am i way off?

@countrydancex

Hi there. The whole point made in the video is that footwork doesn’t matter. Triple steps are footwork. On that note, you can anchor without doing an anchor step. People get that confused.
