The Dinner & A Movie stuff made me oddly nostalgic for when TBS still aired up here in Canada, 'cause I remembered seeing those segments a fair amount; I think I even taped the D&AM _Blues Brothers_ broadcast on VHS. When the channel split up into the national TBS Superstation and the more local, Atlanta-themed Peachtree TV in the late-00s, for some reason all of Canada's cable providers kept Peachtree and ditched TBS. Honestly, I still miss it.

How has reliving the war effected your views on WCW and Nitro, watching it all back now on this channel? I too was a huge WCW fan growing up. However didn’t get into WCW until 98. I watched back in later years. At the time I thought they were awesome. However now, looking back, my views have changed a lot. I feel for the most part, it was the same show week in week out. With Hogan and the NWO, which was stale by late 96, early 97. It was still Hogan on top. Like he’d always been, only with the roles reversed. WWF were the better product most weeks and a lot of weeks by far. This is being reflected in the week by week scoring on reliving the war. Where at a time where WCW were winning in the ratings WWF are getting a lot of points. It will be interesting to find out if WWF starts running away with things as time goes on, especially into 98/99.

That’s all I ever watched growing up was WCW. Back in the day when downloading stuff was the norm I downloaded all the WCW stuff I could find and made dvd. I have every nitro thunder and pvv the WCW put on since the 80’s. Smartest thing I ever did.
@wulver810
@wulver810 2 жыл бұрын
@@martynodonnell8467 I only started getting into WWF around early '99. I feel that Reliving the War really waters down how hot WCW was back then because of Hogan and nWo run-in DQs. As you will notice, a DQ on WCW by nWo RUINS a match, while a DQ in WWF really doesn't impact it as much... Goldberg will put together piss poor matches if we keep to this trend of lacking emotional impact. Just watched it to the end... notice how he didn't even like the main event and talks about how it was a basic match? DDP stunned Luger... when has that happened in a previous match? That is a nice twist, but it goes basically ignored... "wuaaah just a basic nitro match". This was a solid PPV and I rated it higher than Summer Slam.
@martynodonnell8467
@martynodonnell8467 2 жыл бұрын
@@wulver810 everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Reliving The War is simply the opinion of wrestling bios. I think with the NWO run ins. The problem was it was happening on too many weeks, which meant the main event matches rarely had a winner. The NWO run ins got stale quickly. Also the problem was Hogan was still on top, in the same spot he’d always been, only as a heel. Which again got stale quickly. I think the main point with the main event of this show was it could have happened any week on Nitro. It wasn’t a memorable match. On a side note it was a “super show” however the champion, Hogan, was nowhere to be seen. Compare this Clash of The Champions to Summerslam. Which opened up with a solid cage match between Foley and HHH, which helped progress both mens careers and the main event. In which HBK turned heel and started to move into his DX persona as well as Bret Hart winning the belt, for his final time. Summerslam was a landmark PPV, doing much to progress storylines and careers. Clash Of Champions was very forgettable and throw away. The semi main event being a non wrestling related event in “dinner and date” on a wrestling show.

Exactly if someone botched a move more often than not you’d see the other wrestler look like a deer in headlights. Also as friends I’m sure Eddie had a genuine laugh at Chris’s expense too lol.

Dinner & Movie always felt like it tried to capture the energy of Joe Bob Briggs & TNT's MonsterVision. Guys riffing and playing off a movie that was playing on the network, but these two lacked Joe's charisma and actual love of the films being featured to make it work and the pair felt like they distracted from the movie playing more than anything else.

Imagine how much better the nWo story would have been if it ended at Starrcade 97? The build the to Hogan finally losing the belt. Hell even having the nWo split happen right away. Then the two versions destroy each other. WCW might just have kept up with WWE if they did that.

statisticlly, NWO was a big ratings draw for 98...Hogan, Hall and Nash were over....so wouldnt make sense to end at Starrcade 97...they just needed to book it better, like build heat and have Austin/Rock type characters take them down (DDP, Booker T, Goldberg, Sting, etc..)....if Goldberg didnt get hurt, he was gonna be the first to take down the united NWO/Wolfpac and the Finger Poke of Doom wouldve made sense

WCW never knew how to book a wrestling show. That was their main issue. They got lucky with a few good ideas, Nitro, The Outsiders, NWO and Hogans heel turn, which worked for a while. Got them attention and that was about it. If WCW had the same level as booking as WWF had. With the card WCW had, they would have ran away with “the war”.
@juststatedtheobvious9633

@@martynodonnell8467 There were people who knew how to book a good show. But they also had to manage egos and a lot of backstage politics. Sometimes, you could be on someone's hit list just for being too good at your job. (See: all the attempts to sabotage Flair, and not just in the ring, either.)
@martynodonnell8467
@martynodonnell8467 2 жыл бұрын
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 that in itself in a sense is poor booking. As it was due to contract stipulations, such as creative claus and guaranteed money. Which made it very difficult to book these wrestlers, with these huge egos, in anything which wasn’t favourable to themselves. That aside. This whole “Clash of The Champions” show was very poorly booked. It was, a “super show”. Hogan was champion, he should at least been on the show. The matches were all meaningless and rushed and the main attraction seemed to be the “dinner and a movie”. Just very poorly put together and booked. Compare this to say a WWF In Your House show, from this time.

Loved Dinner & A movie!!! When they showed Smokey and the Bandit they made the Famous Diablo sandwich the sheriff eats in the Diner. During the airing of the breakfast club they made the cereal sandwich 😂 🤣. Great memories! And that ending with sting 🔥.

I don't know what it is about Mongo, but I can't help but like him. Love watching him sell and his antics outside of the ring. Never watched WCW when I was younger, hell, I didn't even know it existed when I was younger watching wrestling. I was an oblivious child and a WWF little kid. I missed out on a lot of stuff as a kid

So a little info on Dinner and a Movie. The premise was to air a movie and have intermittent breaks which would showcase chefs cooking meals inspired by the movie being aired. Of course, since it was TBS, nearly all of the movies were at least 10 years old at the time because of Turner's purchase of older films. So that's basically. A novel concept that I personally liked but could understand why it didn't catch on long term.

lol, I remember Dinner & A Movie on TBS. I watched WarGames on there (the Matthew Broderick movie. Not the WCW ppv). That was long before the days of on-demand or streaming so watching edited movies on cable TV was the alternative to renting movies. Some channels aired themed-movie programming for extra entertainment value. Joe Bob Briggs had a show on TNT that was a lot of fun.

I remember watching this live and thought something was wrong with the cable feed. Good stuff. I might have been at the last Nitro where Sting talked. It was in Mankato, MN, and that's when he said he may or may not be in the price range, but the only thing for sure about Sting is nothing's for sure. I could be wrong, but that was the last time he talked. Let me know.

Dinner and a Movie was huge for TBS. Not widely cultural by any means but at that time they got movies you couldn't find outside Blockbuster or the premium movie packages. Blues Brothers, Tremors, The Burbs... Great movies!

i remember watching this live for what it was it was a solid “Free” HQ event seeing the WCW version of Raven after seeing him in ECW was night & day to some extent due to the bookers at WCW not fully understanding how to use Raven the proper way. its amazing there was no law suit against WCW/ Sting they blatantly ripped off every aspect of the Crow (Even his “Crow” Sting debut was lifted from the opening of the Crow) Dinner & a Movie was somewhat hit it ran for years on TBS one stand out episode they did was a one-off episode using all Chimps to act in bits from major hits of 1997 actually really silly stuff like As Good as it Gets, Boogie Nights, Titanic, etc.
