Since it's a HDD, is it really just fine to hold it and shake it around like this in the video while the disks are spinning and the read write head is floating right on top?

@6:35 "The main ones we want to be concerned with is these (pointing to the top row)." If you are sequentially transferring single, large files, then the above statement is correct. If you are performing other tasks, (for example) of the type that your computer normally does in the background, then the lower (random read/write) rows are what count. If, for example, you will be doing multiple read and write operations, then the top row is of little value. Solid state drives (SSDs) excel with random reads and random writes, and it is why PCs with SSDs boot up so fast (because when the OS starts, it is reading and writing countless small files, and doing so simultaneously). It is also why applications start so quickly on SSDs (because many applications read and write lots of small files, simultaneously). By comparison, mechanical drives suck at those simultaneous operations. So which results from the benchmark are important is not up to the host of this video. It is up to each person, depending on how they will be using the drive. To put it another way... there is a reason the benchmark tool provides those "random" read/write results. It is not there to be ignored. ----- As it pertains to connecting the drive to a smart phone... Note that USB powered drives (meaning no separate power cord) will run, but possibly at a slower speed (not 3.0 speed, but 2.0 speed, or slower), depending on whether or not the smart phone is able to adequately power the USB drive. I have not tested it on a smart phone. So it might run at full speed. But just be aware that the drive will run slowly if it does not get enough power to run at full (3.0) speed. Perhaps if you phone's battery level goes below X%, you might notice a performance hit. If the drive falls back to 2.0 speed while connected to your phone, you will probably not notice. If it falls back to 1.1 speed, then you will see a huge performance hit. Cheers!

I've only ever used WD and Seagate and never had a drive die on me, every single one has been from an accidental drop. Even a slight drop from inside it's own packaging. Three down so far. I do wonder how badly they are handled in warehouses and transit too. If portable drives are slightly more resistant to shock (whether hdd or ssd) then it's no doubt the better option from now on

I placed my new WD external drive on top of my laptop, which eventually overheats (the laptop while charging), which causes my WD to heat up. When I realized it got hot, I immediately transfer its position and unplug it afterwards. Will it cause a bad effect on my WD drive? TIA!

I have one of this, after a couple of years of good used I tried to reset in order to free all the space. Unfourtunately, this resetting also delete the read me or exe files, so now any laptop can read it, downloaded a few resources online with no luck.... ANY ADVICE??

I bought this to plug in my ps4 and view all my music, movies, photos etc and it doesn't work. Doesn't work with my smart tv. Doesn't work with Apple TV. Media players seem to be thing of the past. This only works on my laptop and had I known it doesn't work anywhere else I wouldn't have bought it. Any suggestions on how to view my content from WD Passport other then my laptop?

Hi I wanted to buy, this 2tb hard drive so I take it, the whole saga of one and naruto plus I will take, all the photos and videos of my iPhone 12 Pro when I fill it. But since I already have the 5 TB Lacie reinforced hard disk at home I have a MacBook Air 5 TB hard disk at home, I used up, almost 600 GB the hard disk still reads me tb if I buy , this 2TB or 4TB product and using, on my Mac will give me full capacity or am I wrong.

These are useful devices for transferring data. They are not a backup solution. If you have precious data, burn them to an Mdisc or a Taiyo Yuden CD or DVD media. Those are proven back up solutions. Any external or even internal HDD or SDD has a finite shelf life. It is not a matter IF but rather of WHEN your drive will fail.

@@WadeG94 To utilize the full capacity of the drive, it must be initialized by using GUID partition table (GPT). In Windows 10, that can be done by converting MBR to GPT in Disk Management.
