This bogus message is like a check engine light that goes on when your car warranty expires.. total baloney scam here

NAS driives live for years without an issue. I have an old DS413j with 2TB WD Reds that I use as a media store and is running without a glitch for 10+ years.

To be honest, this pretty much kills what sliver of trust I had in WD. Moving forward, whenever I encounter a WD Drive, whether the error message comes from SMART or WDDA, I'll be left wondering: Is this error message legit, or is it some scummy way to try to sell more drives. I wont be able to trust that the Data I'm being provided is unbiased, or even legitimate, so as far as I'm concerned, WD Drives are a no-go in the future, and I can't see how they'll be able to regain that trust.

if it's a 3yr warranty and they "warn" you at the 3yr power on time , then it's more about "your warranty HAS expired" , if they warned you at 2yrs and 11months power-on and they were SWAMPED with demands to replace drive under Warranty , maybe THAT would make them stop this.....

Will this make the cost of WD Red NAS drop in price?

What I am still left wondering is does WDDA have any other way for the end user to see results/output? We can typically view SMART test results in multiple software but supposedly WDDA is not viewable. In other words is there any other software that allows the end user to view WDDA? How about other NAS software like TruNAS?

Well, the main theory that was put forward in the video was that WDDA itself is just one on these pieces of software that you speak of which display SMART data in different ways. That would perfectly track with your reasoning, while at the same time explain why there aren't other "WDDA viewers" (as there then exists no WDDA-specific data, only WDDA thresholds for SMART data).

I agree with Eddie here. I simply don't see this as an issue. The warning in question does not say your drive is bad, only that it has passed a certain milestone in terms of hours. It says the following: "The drive has accumulated a large number of power on hours through the entire life of the drive. Please consider to replace the drive soon." Yeah the consider replacing is a bit smarmy marketing, but it does NOT say your drive is bad that you should or must replace it soon, only consider. And Frankly if this triggered some users to panic that is more a lack of knowledge on the part of the user who is reading between the lines of the warning. To me this is more of a Synology issue than a WD issue.

The wording came from WD, it's 100% a WD issue.

Imaging you get a notice on your car. "The car has been driving 50,000Miles or is now 4 years old You should consider to buy a new car as soon as possible." -Guess you are fine with that....

The point that caught my attention is that once the drive is in “warning” status; the user won’t know when something else issues a real warning that needs to be attended to.
@jamesford3443 Жыл бұрын
@@LLM9027 yeah, considering my car already pings me to tell me my lights are not on, my seat belts not fastened, airbags are not activated in the passenger sear or that i am too close to another vehicle and on and on, one more "warning" who cares

@@jamesford3443 A free if that is happening with a 3 year old car, better go buy a new.

Thanks for the Info. I'm wondering if WDDA is only looking at the manufactured date and comparing that with current date and flagging it if it's 3+ years. I'm also wondering if DSN system date is changed back in time, will the WDDA warning go away.? I do have some unopened Red Plus drives which has Dec 28, 2021 date on it but never been opened. what if I plug these drives and change DSM system date to 2025 or something. I'm wondering if the WDDA warning will come on right away.

Great video - thanks guys ! Provided my yet to set-up Synology NAS system with two WD Red Pro 4Tb drives comes with WDDA, hidden or visible, or not. When it does, can I just ingnore the warning pops-up and more importantly will my drives and NAS remain operating as before or will it shut down or slow down the NAS and/or drives ? Hence disabling WWDA is the (only) imperative option to keep the NAS system up and running ?
@user-mk3lb5ve7b Жыл бұрын
Perhaps it could also be Synology's fault for not allowing power users to suppress/disable this warning/check in DSM

I’ve got 4 WD RED drives (the original CMR versions) with 9.5 years power on hours. Zero errors on Smart testing.
