I Purchased two brand new WD 18tb for my upcoming film shoots on Facebook marketplace. I plugged them up and nothing worked, until I came across your video. A simple Amazon purchase for some MOLEX ADAPTERS and now I have 32tb of hard drive space. Thank for the heads up. You're Da Man!

Just CUT the orange wire on your sata power cable and its work, this HDD doesnt need +3.3vdc power, only +5 and +12vdc

SATA power connectors can safely provide up to 54 Watts of power. Molex power connectors can safely provide up to 132 Watts* of power. PCIe 6 pin power connectors can safely provide up to 75 Watts of power.

@@hanzkranz1319 that's a good question, a lot of things are cheaper in the US, sometimes EU stuff can be cheaper, but rather rarely. In WD case - it is a US company, EU generally has more tariffs and taxes on imported goods. A BMW or Mercedes in USA is often cheaper in than in Germany, and definitely cheaper than in other EU countries because of tariffs

You are really crazy! You disconnect from the power 14TB drive in live system???? Once I had 8tb drive and I took it out from docking station just a few seconds after I powered it off and I felt that the discs were still spinning and later the HDD had a lot of bad sectors. Unfortunatelly I already copied a lot of data to it and some was not recoverable. Fortunatelly it was 1 day after purchase and seller accepted my return and sent me a new one which is still working perfectly up to now, but I'm very carefull with HDDs I connect using my docking station - I would never connect a disc like you did - you can lose date this way.

WUH721414ALE604 - this model is a "very" Internal HDD, and probably can only be used as that.

@@alegreviews Seems this model has been sold to/manufactured as an OEM server SI market or internally for the WD Easystores and other WD external solutions, not even supported as a hard drive under retail warranty ;) So is this a shuckled drive? Have you verified the warranty period (an OEM SI drive would result in a "warranty supported by reseller only" message, that often is 1yr compared to retail models manufacturer warranty of 5 yrs)?

I just placed an order for one of these HDD . I had in mind that all HDD would need to be connected to the sata cable from the psu ? I guess not? But I was planning to give it power from the psu so I should be fine? or im not understanding something? Thanks for the video sir!

A person in 1 of the comments explained it best: darkcg79 I did some investigations on this fact and I want to point out one other trick to recognize if your Ultrastar would work in your PC without hassle: basically, you have to check your product number: for Ultrastar disks, the penultimate letter or number of your product number is what tells you if your model supports the Pin 3 Power Disable (PWDIS) feature or not. If it is "0", like the product number of the disk shown in this video, the power disable pin 3 feature IS supported (so you need the trick described in this video). If it is an "L", the feature IS NOT supported and it will work normally inside a regular PC without the SATA 3.3 power supply. Hope this clarify things a bit.

@@alegreviews thank you very much , yes I saw that comment . According to Amazon my penultimate number it’s an L so I should be good . Let’s hope I received the same hdd . Thank you

@@MapleJokerRofl those with L usually go at higher price on 3rd party market (Amazon/eBay), but somebody might send one instead of the other, often unknowingly. Many people just see them as 14TB WD when they are in OEM packaging like that without a UPC on the package

@@alegreviews if the item I receive is not what I’m expecting I will return it . The seller is WD so idk . Where would you suggest me to purchase from?
@alegreviews
@alegreviews 3 жыл бұрын
well I always take the risk myself and buy from 3rd party seller more often on ebay instead of Amazon because of generally lower price. On Amazon prices are generally higher but sellers are generally more honest, but Amazon price is often same as to buy from manufacturer or from BestBuy, I would go with the latter any day. People are just so used to Amazon and they everything on Amazon. Amazon Prime Fulfilled order are easy to return if something is wrong. I think either HDD is very fast and good to have if You really need 14TB. I personally have 4TB SSD, I overpaid compared to HDD storage at that price. But I like instantanious access to everything without lags that I had before even with SSHD. I would never go back to HDD. But HDD is more reasonable for now if You need all that storage

Enjoying a 16TB WD Gold drive in my Windows 7, etc., machine. I didn't need the power trick here to get the drive to work though. Just straight SATA power works for me on the Gold drive. Windows 10 is just an inconsistent mess of a UI slapped on Windows 7 for Microsoft's service ecosystem ambitions. It adds nothing for users beyond intentional obsolesces of earlier OSs, Wait, I take that back. It does have one nice new feature since Windows 8 - wireless display support. Pay no attention to the scared sheep that don't know how to secure and maintain a computer for themselves and would rather let Microsoft drive their computers for them.
