Annika Sorenstam may be the best woman ever? Strong and fast, great sequence. Hit a draw from an open clubface at the top. Complicated movement, but obviously good enough to dominate from 6400 yards.

Wayne, you are doing a fantastic service for golfers everywhere with your video analyses. I've have learned more in the past three years on KZbin and your site than in my previous three decades of studying the swing. You don't have to defend a thing you've said here!

Wayne it is simply amazing how telanted she is. If I swing losing the tusline like her and get above the shaft plane at impact, my left shoulder hikes up something aweful. Rotating her head most help her release the shoulder rotation. This swing proves that head movement is not only great but necessary. Most golfers do not understand that the head is only a follower not the leader. The only leaders in golf, are the feet first then the knees and hips. Great analysis keep up the great work

Her swing reminds me a little of Moe Norman with a such a smooth and pendulum motion. She's so smooth and her tempo is picture perfect. She has such a minimalist swing while using her big muscles and not her little ones. Definitely a swing to copy particularly for people who aren't built perfectly for golf.

I tried today this "no look impact" drill and I hit about 28 good shots in a row with my 9-iron. My head turning with the shoulders help me being MUCH MORE OPEN at impact. My divots were too deep before this and my ball flight too low. Now the divots got just nice and shallow and the 9-irons were about 5-8 meters higher and clearly longer too.

@TheGolfSage actually I have to agree with Mr. Defrancesco. If you pause the vid at exactly 3:10 you will see that her shoulders are perfectly 90 degrees to the target at impact. I have found that by moving my head slightly toward the target just before impact makes me turn properly keep my spine angle and not sway. Thus creating good lag and a more consistent strike. Thanks to Annika for this wisdom.

Annika and Colin Montgomerie share a lot of similarities in their top of the backswing and club face alignment positions. This leads to similar deliveries and two of the most consistent swings that have ever played golf.

Have to agree with carole lerman here. Have you looked at Henrik Stenson's swing? Seems the Swedes have something in common. I never understood the maxim "you can never stand too close to the ball" until seeing them swing in slow motion. It comes down to the most efficient use of gravity to start and power the downswing. Having suffered a concussion, I had to retrain my golf swing so that my head turns during the swing just to assist my balance (a la Ron Del Barrio). Turns out to be an amazingly efficient way to move the club, because your body movement is efficient to start with.

Maybe a little Colin Montgomery action with the hips? More Jimmy Ballard style. Whats amazing is with the hip motion she has is that she does not slide through the ball and is able to rotate and maintain that lag. Though the big double shift on the backswing and downswing, wonderful move but its very difficult for the average duffer to learn, trust me ( :

A lot of the Swedish players have been influenced by Jimmy Ballard. Connected take away, soft left arm, maintaining the "triangle", and releasing the head and right side all Ballard concepts he learned from Sam Byrd. Stenson another one preloads right side and release of the triangle very athletic and beautiful to watch.

the best video on how to come into the ball. Do you have one on the setup for a draw or fade if I have an open stance. I am not sure where ball should be in my stance if I have an open stance. Meaning my left foot back and my right foot a bit outside the right at setup.

The hand-eye coordination necessary to pull off a swing like this consistently is incredible. It is beautiful in its rhythm and unorthodoxy but thoroughly useless for anyone to emulate. If you are the gifted 1% and have timing this good and aren’t already scratch you’d be best to learn a more “normal” swing. I had a similar swing due to back issues as a youngster, but weight training and puberty made it more “normal”. The fact that I went from a 12 handicap with my old swing (inconsistency) to a 4 with my new one in a matter of months proves how ridiculously difficult this is. The amount of movement in the hips, the amount of closing on the downswing, the forward head, etc...as gifted a golfer as tiger woods imo.

Wayne, Great commentary here. I have studied this swing for years and have certain tendencies that get me coming back to it. Because in driver and 3 wood the ball is so far forward in stance.. i feel like I can release the club properly like I'm turning into a wall into left leg while having head in normal position.. but all my irons and wedges are like Annika's release... I cannot keep my head down when ball is middle or back in stance, I end up hitting more of a stall/flip. DJ and Henrick often do this too on their short irons/wedges. Curious your opinion on the JT-esque right foot push/throw.. I'm trying to get rid of it as it has me stall into my left side more than I need to. Would like to stay and turn more into right heel like Annika does here.

@TheGolfSage Her head rotates with the body as to help keep her spine angle from shfting. Just because her head is turning, does not mean her eyes are not looking at the ball at impact. On a side note, analyzing a pro for tips on fundamentals is great, but using them as a guideline for a swing is not a great idea, since most people are not pysically capable of doing what they do. The small percentage of people who are capable, and are serious about golf should have thier own coach.

If any, and I mean ANY swing coach tells you you should be ACTIVELY, consciously thinking about hand position in your swing at ANY point other than the set up, then get your money back, call me, I WILL TEACH YOU, and you can give me what you feel it was worth. I have proven to dozens of golfers that with no B.S. Class A or fancy instruction school title, and no formal training, I am able to transform a swing in a matter of a couple hours. Most of them don't even need instruction after the fact.

Johnny Miller was doing one of the women's majors (I assume the U.S. Open but I don't remember) and he said of her swing: She just picks the club up and then drops it back down, not a whole lot to it and not much power but you can hit the ball straight like that, if that's what you are after. He was pretty dismissive of her swing...God bless Johnny Miller, he is the only golf commentator who wouldn't bow down to every golfer.
