The WDR BIG BAND performs together with Jimmy Heath his composition "Without You No Me". Solos are played by John Marshall and Ruud Breuls on trumpet. Produced during his last visit in his 90th year at WDR Studio 4, Cologne (September 2016).

This tune was taken by his last visit in 2016 at the age of 90. "Without You No Me" was composed and arranged by Jimmy Heath and features both John Marshall and Ruud Breuls on trumpet, Jimmy himself on tenor and Frank Chastenier on piano.

Jimmy is one of the greatest jazz masters of all time. It was a treat for me to get master sax lessons from him years ago when I was attending Jazzmoblie in NYC.

Jimmy Heath was born in October of 1926. In early 1947, he put together his own big band in Philly and he got John Coltrane to join. John was a month older than Jimmy so they were both 20. He also got Charlie Parker to sit in for rehearsals and play a concert with them but Jimmy had to lend him his sax for a week because Parker’s was in the pawn shop. This guy has has been around!

I dunno how it's possible. A lot of the older pro's lost their mojo, especially past 80 years old. Johnny Griffin, Jim Hall, and Benny Golson all sound(ed) great--but were past their prime after 80. The Heath brothers... I dunno what it is about them, but they sound as good if not better than during their hard bop heydays. Jimmy plays with such authority and melodicism here that it's almost scary!
