@7:15, Ginting smashes 3 out of 11 overheads, Lee Zii Jia smashes 4 out of 11 overheads, and if you saw Lin Dan 2008 Olympics, 6 out of 11 overheads were smashes and he smashed the most out of any pro player I've seen. You're also talking about a "You lift, you lose" type of player when looking at 2008 Olympics Lin Dan. That would be a great example to throw in there if Lee Zii Jia and Anthony Ginting's variation isnt enough.

I think lifting a lot on purpose can be an excellent strategy to exhaust your opponents, as used by Chia/Soh against Setia/Ahsan in BWF World Championship 2022 Men’s Double’s Final.

Definitely! They did it really well - but watch how their lifts were always right to the back and often flat to make Ahsan and Setiawan move a lot!

Late to the party here, at 2:31 to be fair on Dau, his opponent played a shot that tempted Dau's partner to go for the bird but she did not get there. That put her in "no man's land" so to speak. Trouble is, it also blocked any cross court reply that Dau could have played. He could have hit a nice centre drive but her head was in the way. Partner should have focussed more on moving forwards and covering cross-court instead of being tempted to play a shot behind her on her backhand. In mixed, the lady should be always trying to position herself diagonally opposite the opposing guy not straight on to him. Try it.

Hi both. I am from India and I have been playing badminton for the past 5 years but going on a professional coaching only for the past 1 and half year. My weakness which so far i have seen myself or heard from my friends/coach are below. 1. After putting a long serve in singles and waiting in the middle, i am not able to move to front from the middle both on the forehand and backhand side if the opponent puts a drop. This is the same case even if the opponent chooses to do an attacking toss. Simply my legs freeze and I know i can move well but i am freezing and move to the shuttle late which forces me to make a short lift. 2. A lot of times i end up in a confusion to choose what shots should i play. 3. I need to improve my speed on court. 4. Also my recovery seems to ne veru slow after heavy fitness exercises for eg. We do steps in the early morning and evening when i go for regular class, i feel like my calfs are paining too much including my knees when i lunge for multi shuttle sessions. 4. What is your advice for a good recovery. Any diet suggestions please. 5. I really need to improve on my defence as well. Sorry for making this long. Your inputs would mean a lot.

Hey, I just saw your comment! 1) I had the same problem for quite some time. What really helped me was focusing on my split step as this really initiates a quick movement and you activate your feet like this. 2) I do not know how you play and also on which level you play, but on my level (ambitious recreational player), people tend to play way too less drops, although they often put you in a very good position, when they are played well. 3) Similar to no.1, I had the same problem too. Jenny and Greg have great "4 corner footwork" tutorial on their channel. I watched this many times and practiced simply running around the court with the correct technique while not playing any shots. When you nail the basics of the footwork, you are immediately a lot quicker and less exhausted. 5) Stand on the front foot as this will help getting forward quicker and really focus on using the right grip as mentioned in the video. The rest is simply practicing (as far as I know) Hope this helps at least a little bit!

No, not always Kenny! If you’re off balance and hitting from right on the back line it’s often not a good idea to smash! It obviously depends on how good your smash is though and also how good your opponents defence is!

After playing 5+ years of badminton, my new coach told me that my game would improve if I would play more slow shots in the middle of the court when I am in trouble. Like dropshots or low push shots. Those shots are not that difficult to play, add a lot of variety, save energy and confuses opponents, especially in doubles. Because my smash is quite strong he also told me, just like you said in your vid, to try to force the opponent to play shots that allow me to smash. Playing more drops and building up for smashes improved my game drastically. 5 years wasted with trying to end each rally as quickly as possible 😂
