What do Hotshot crews do if it is a slower fire season with less fires?

Hi Cole, good question! When not assigned to a wildfire, our Interagency Hotshot crews work with their home units on projects like thinning, prescribed fires, trail construction and maintenance. They also will conduct training sessions in the classroom and the field as well as refurbishing equipment to be ready for the next assignment.

Great question- usually get the piss smoked out of you by overhead with extra p.t. As your season gets underway you’ll realize how much better it is to be on a fire than back at h.q.

A very random, somewhat off subject question; discussing dozer operators on a Facebook page, I did not know if your dozer operators had to wear nomex jumpsuits & a pilot style helmet, or if in the past, or if they only require a regular brush short, helmet, etc., (not aware if all of the DOI had the same policy)?

The BLM has 12 hotshot crews across the western U.S. and one stationed in Mississippi. Our interagency partners also have hotshot crews. There are about 95 federal interagency hotshot crews throughout the country.
