Loved the walk through. GIves a good look and really show's off the size of the boat. The little window is perfectly placed so the cook can hand you your lunch while you man the helm. 😁

Great idea Rick. We have a deal that when Ross finishes the boat he will spend more time expanding his cooking repatoi, so I'll look forward to sitting at the helm and being fed. :-)Janet

I would make some kind of access panel to the backside of the helm station. Maybe a small shallow cabinet with a removable back wall? If you’re underway and something breaks you won’t be able to get Janet in there once you close it up. I would make sure everyone can fit or be able to access something in case you’re not able.

Try using a Makita cordless sheetrock cutout tool to make curved cuts in fiberglass. I have had great success with it. Did some large speakers holes recently on a Hinkley. Two layers of glass and foam core in one pass. They freehand cut a line very well and don’t jump or grab, lots of control. Start with a pilot hole, finish with a drum sander. You cut slow with two hands but it’s actually pretty quick and safe. They don’t chip out the back side either. I’m doing this on finished million dollar boats. Lots of blue tape to protect gel coat and marked with a sharpie. On bigger openings use the router on the curved sections first so the router base has support. Then straight cuts with multitool. You need to use the better multi purpose Rotozip router bits. The regular drywall bits don’t work on fiberglass.

Somewhere in there, underneath the roof, you need to make a space for a starlink antenna... It WILL get a signal through fiberglass or plexiglass, and if you can keep it inside and the cable routed well, you won't have to deal with mounting it outside where it can get damaged or cable holes through the hull.

Ross, have you considered composite chainplates? Lots of advantages over SS. 1) no leaks, 2) virtually zero fatigue stress, 3) less weight, 4) adhesives are much stronger in lap shear than bolts, 5) no crevise corrosion, 6) no maintenence.
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls Жыл бұрын
Chainplates will be external to avoid issues with leakage and other complications.I am likely to use 10mm 316 ss plate bolted into the deck and hull side as per seawind, lightwave,etc.

For your window, the RV industry in the US at least, has windows that the inside has a trim piece that has screws about every 6 inches or so that go through the inside trim and screw into a special detail on the inside of the outer window frame. Just need a good gasket on the outside or to us the right SilkaFlex type material. You might also check with Taylor Made products as they have windows that they sell to commercial boat manufacturers. I don't know if there's a plant in Australia though.

Hatch for helm structure access in order to tab everything may be too useful to glass over.. and may be more worthwhile to get a circular hatch like in your head for temporary access until you've gotten boat tested out.. you can easily close in an 8"-10" dia hole later.... That back area of helm is going to be highly stressed by simultaneous compressive and side loads from sheet lines thru clutches and winches. Are you deriving all loads just into helm's composite structure or will the be a load spreading steel reinforcement structure under it once it's all glassed in Ross ? PS Don't stick Janet in that tiny deep cabinet for that ugly job !
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls Жыл бұрын
The clutches are to be positioned on the cabin roof for load spreading.Winches will be on the gel c onsole and have more than adequate backing and structure now with the line box ,cabin side and roof forming a box section.Platform is further reinforced acking with 6mm solid glass backing then 6 further layers of 600db to finish off. There will be no steel however the witnch bases are solid brass.
